mega thread Unpopular Music Related Opinions

I'm sorry but I really hate it when people say a certain artist is overrated. That just talks more about their popularity than their actual music.

No, people make that assumption because they have too much popularity based on their musical talent. So in a way, it talks about both popularity and their actual music

That's true, but sometimes an artist really is overrated...like Justin Bieber...just look at how ridiculously popular he is and look at how crappy his music is. Definitely doesn't deserve that popularity.

Define overrated. There are some artist's that don't even care about popularity. Some even prefer not to become too famous or popular at all. Btw, I don't like Justin Bieber's music either and I also don't think that he deserves all the popularity he has. However, I will still admit that this is still just an opinion.

Not really. Not all artists are popular just because of their musical talent. The actual word 'overrated' does not directly describe their actual music. Edited by LatinoChurro

The word overrated means that a artist or band have more popularity than they deserve. If they are popular of any other reason their musical talent, they are overrated and there's no denying this. because they have more popularity than they deserve (there might be exceptions)

And if someone is considered overrated, that means that they don't deserve their popularity because their musical talent isn't as good as people make it out to be, thus describing their actual music

What on earth are you talking about? I said that people shouldn't judge a bands quality based on how innovative they are. If that's the case, all you need to do is get drunk, play something completely random and soulless, create a new sound and be praised as one of the best bands of all time.   Also, check that post I did once more. Where did I say that The Beatles were bad?

Hello, I'm tired as hell. Sorry let me rephrase that, I was in attack mode.  My top opinion wasn't meant to be directed at anyone in particular, just my opinion.  And yes, bands shouldn't be weighed by innovativeness. I don't judge Pink Floyd by innovativeness.

Case and point: Nirvana, their were really good, but what they have been made out to be is ridiculous

Beatles were pretty cool guys, did a lot in their lives, they deserve most of their popularity.

No you dumbdumb, Harrison died of cancer.

There's a difference between saying an artist is overrated and saying their music is overrated. And how much popularity an artist deserves is an opinion, not a fact. Same goes for wether you think an artist's music is 'good'.

Oh, and the term 'overrated' still does not describe the content of the actual music.

There was talk of decades before, no? Lemme take my shot at my bests for every decade.

60's: Frank Zappa. Pushed far more boundaries than anyone except maybe Beefheart.

70's: Yes. A band that went in many more directions than any other prog rock band at the time.

80's (AKA the worst decade music has had so far IN MY OPINION): Philip Glass. This guy may not have been that experimental in a subgenre of classical music that's experimental to begin with, but his music captivates me the most.

90's: Fugazi. This band is a prime example of how to move things forward. They took what Minor Threat did, slowed it down, and made it twice as intricate.

00's: Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This is incredibly biased of me to say, as they're my favorite band, but nobody did music like them before they did what they did, and no one does music like them now. Simple as it gets.

Personally I love now a days music, but I dislike pop

Yes, finally someone who likes today's music.

Well look at The Sex Pistols, they weren't great musicians (Sid especially) but they did make one the most influencial records of all time.

My opinion on the 80's is that there was A LOT of shit back then. But there was a lot of good stuff too, it's just not as popular. Take Bon Jovi, a shitty band that was very popular, and Bathory, a highly influencial metal act from the 80's that was never on MTV or anything back then.

Okay I'm not even a Beatles fan, but I'm not getting how the fuck they are bad and why anyone should feel bad for liking them. They are considered one of the greatest bands of all time by so many people, they are legends. Again, I think they are overrated as hell, but how are they bad???

So Hitler is a legend too, I mean he made people consider nazism one of the greatest things to happen to Germany, right?!

Also, since Yeezus is coming out, let me say this: Kanye West is one of the single most important musicians of the century and he is the biggest innovator in pop music. Seriously like he shapes music/culture with everything he does.

LED ZEPPLEN

You saying there is something wrong with  Led Zeppelin Dawn. You better not be shitting on them. They are firmly in second place for me in my choice of the 70's.  Because saying that Led Zeppelin is bad is about the single most ignorant/dumbest thing you could say. Poetic is the word that comes to mind when I listen to Led Zeppelin. Think about the disgrace that you just committed.

I'll just leave this here:

Who sacrifices to Satan I mean really? Should be sacrificing to Cthulhu or Sauron

I lol'd after you accused me of being twelve.

In all seriousness though, I think this thread has really fueled some great, valid arguments about some different topics in music. smile.png

AHHNNANANANA not believing you lies.

I think Rush is a far superior band.

Bitch plz, Black Sabbath and Joy Divison are both better.

What the heck does LELTOP LELTOP mean????

I personally believe that Bohemian Rhapsody is a godawful song and I hate it with a passion

I also dislike Stairway to Heaven, but it's not nearly as bad as Bohemian Rhapsody. Speaking of that song, I dislike Queens in general as well

Okay so back to the thread topic, I like In Utero more than Nevermind. And I think Bleach is just as good as either of those two albums. Don't know how unpopular that is but yeah there you go.

>comparing prog rock to doom metal and post-punk

Why are you even trying? I can think of bands I like more than even those you mentioned for their respective genres. Yes for 70's prog rock, Candlemass for traditional doom metal, and Swans for post-punk.

Electric Wizard>Candlemass

I've listened to Nighfall about a million times. Ya know I kinda take that back, Electric Wizard is stoner doom with a bit of sludge. Candlemass is traditional doom.

Anyways,

Power metal fucking sucks, except for Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt1.

AC/DC is boring, they're not bad. Just not very exciting

I like poppy music ex. Nirvana, Descendents, Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure, etc.

I would say that In Utero and Nevermind are just as good (my opinion) and I think that Bleach is their best album. I don't think it's too unpopular around here

Agreed.

The Descendents rule so hard.

This is like proto-pop-punk. Really unique.

But also, I wouldn't dismiss an entire sub-genre of metal, or any genre for that matter. I've found some power metal I like, cheesy or otherwise.

I'm not sure if Wintersun would fall into that category, but they have elements of it. Their drummer played for Rotten Sound as well. GIVE ME TIME II NOW I CAN'T WAIT MUCH LONGER

Anyway, another opinion of mine. I can't stand when people say bands like Necrophagist or Rings of Saturn are technical for the sake of being technical, and therefore bad. Sure, they're technical, but if you're looking for them to be anything else, of course you'll think badly of them.

My exception to this is

a three-piece that makes music that's both technical and interesting. Edited by ToBeATree

Yes!?!?!?!? for progressive rock?!?!?!? How? I mean sure they are pretty good, but you forget who ruled the 70's progressive rock.

Pink Floyd

I love Yes, but Pink Floyd is so much better.

I really like Children of Bodom, they use elements of power metal. But I consider them a melodeath band.

Sure they ruled it, but I find Yes to be more engaging. My second place might be Jethro Tull, though they weren't really completely prog until "Thick as a Brick" came around.

How is Pink Floyd not engaging? I find that Yes is much less engaging. Pink Floyd is basically as deep as music gets. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut were all gut wrenching albums to me. Maybe I'm just crazy or maybe it's because I connect so deeply with their music. Dunno.

I will post my two favorite Yes songs though for you because they are pretty damn good.

Absolutely. Black Flag, X, the Dead Kennedys, even early Green Day. There was a lot going on in punk around California for, what, 20 years?

THEEEEEEEEEERE'S your problem. Those are both from "The Yes Album," and there's so much better music in the Yes catalog.

"Close to the Edge" is a masterpiece, but it doesn't come close to my personal favorite:

I like Nickelback I enjoy there music and I think most of there songs are really good. I feel they get bashed most of the time for no good reason. I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles but some songs have grown on me over time. But I just don't hear the same amazing music everyone says they played.

the Dead Kennedys, even early Green Day.

Theses are northern bands, I'm just refering to SoCal bands.

Bands like Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, X, Descendents, Minutemen, even Slayer if you want to count them. Keep in mind, they were influenced by hardcore punk.

Yea, I'd say that. Washington had grunge and Wahington D.C.had post-hardcore.

Because they're boring.

I can't believe I paused In Utero for this shit.

Anyway, here's another unpopular opinion from me:

I really really don't like Daft Punk. I think their music is extremely boring.
