mega thread Unpopular Music Related Opinions

Le Kvlt Dawn

Recommended Posts

I enjoy pop music. Hell, I've reviewed entire year-end charts. And by that, I mean I sat down, looked at the year-end Billboard chart, and reviewed every single song on that chart. I've done it for 1981, 1997, 2004, 2011, and 2012. Of those, the most interesting one was 2012. While people knock pop artists for being untalented, I have only had a few pop artists I've not enjoyed any songs by (off the top of my head, Chingy from 2004, Justin Bieber and Cher Lloyd). Even artists like Ke$ha and Katy Perry have managed to pull off at least one song I enjoyed.

Just in case you were wondering, my favorite song out of 2012 that hit the charts was "Everybody Talks" by Neon Trees.

I do appreciate prog metal and some of its elements, but no, I wouldn't classify my a real fan of it either. I'm a thrash man, myself. More than anything, though, it's the death dynamic of Opeth that drops them below DT in my eyes, as I'm not exactly a fan of death metal or its elements (as you could probably tell by my hating on the death growl), so for there to be death elements in a prog band kind of ruins the experience further for me. But for those who like both death and prog, I can see why Opeth would be a dream come true.

Then the problem is not the band itself, it is as a matter of a fact that the band just doesn't play the style of music that you like and also Opeth do have quite a few songs that don't have much growling in them at all. Now on the whole subject of comparing Opeth and Dream Theater, man, just cut that out they're both Prog Metal but they're both completely different styles.

True, but that can be said of 99% of the opinions being expressed in this thread, anyway...

I'm not the first in this thread to make that comparison, in fact, the only reason I brought up DT at all was because of the fact that so many others have already stated "Opeth>DT" already. I'm merely stating that I don't see what Opeth has that necessarily gives them a concrete edge over DT. And again, what would it matter? As you said - and I agree - Opeth and DT are apples and oranges, respectively.

Which is why people are sometimes better off left not explaining certain opinions

Really? People had previously gone off with that comparison? Oh well if everyone else has done it then I might as well say that I'd stick with the Opeth fans on this one. Dream Theater to me are a great band, though in my opinion they're all riffs and solos with nothing else. Petrucci isn't that good of a vocalist at all, their lyrics are half decent, and Dream Theater are just...as I stated before a bunch of fancy riffs and solos. Opeth on the other hand have their status as something creative and unique, rather than a status for just being incredibly fast at playing their instruments. Opeth also have a much bigger strong point with their lyrics being much more poetic and well done than Dream Theater's lyrics. And finally Opeth have a vocalist that can keep the mood of the song rather than Petrucci who can't keep the mood of the instrumentation through his vocals.

All in all both bands are good, and this is a stupid comparison, though if you ask me Opeth stand out much higher than Dream Theater do for those reasons above.

Ultimately it all boils down to personal taste - to each his own, and all - and that being said, perhaps DT's quality of focusing more heavily on technical instrumentation is exactly what makes them more relevant to me personally, given that the type of music I generally listen to is more heavily focused on guitar work than on lyrical themes or symphonic elements. That's actually kind of a point of contention in my own band, with the other members wanting songs to focus more on synth and flowery lyrics, whereas I want to write stuff with heavier riffing, ripping solos and aggressive lyrics. At the end of the day, though, I can understand why Opeth works better for you and so many others.

Agreed. Hayseed Dixie is freaking great.

most of the newer country music is garbage to my ears.

Disagree with the first. I'd put it at about half good, half crap. For every Lady Antebellum, there is a Kip Moore. As for Toby Keith...yeah, he lost me at "Red Solo Cup".

rap is a poetry slam on crack :/

...Is that a good or a bad thing?

i like sugar pop crap xD

Nothing wrong with that. Three of my favorite songs out of 2012 were "Everybody Talks" by Neon Trees (which was actually my favorite song of the year), "Glad You Came" by The Wanted, and "Good Time" by Owl City feat. Carly Rae Jepsen.

I like to poke fun at other people's taste in music. I'm not trying to be an elitist, I just think it's funny.I can be really mean sometimes :/

Don't feel too bad. I sometimes do the same thing. Although I usually limit it to people who proclaim certain genres are absolutely terrible or absolutely awesome, with nothing good or bad about them, respectively.

Well the way I do it, it's more of a "haha you listen to (insert shitty band that I don't like here)". So people on here find me to be a bit aggressive at times. Edited by AtDawnTheySquee

  • 1 month later...

I'm bringing this thread back to life.

American Metal>European Metal

"But America lacks symphonic met-". Yea, and Europe lacks sludge metal so STFU.

I dislike Dream Theater, I like Images and Words but that's about it.

I like Between the Buried and Me, a lot of people on here do too but I've seen them get a lot of unnecessary hate on the internet.

I like Children of Bodom, apperantly they have a lot of haters too.

Opeth>Dream Theater

Tool>Dream Theater

Between the Buried and Me>Dream Theater

The sound of me fapping>Dream Theater (Okay I think that's going a little too far)

I hate power metal, the only power metal album I like is Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt.1. And even then I don't listen to it very much.

Feel free to send me death threats via PM.

- Every single mainstream brony musician creates terrible music.

- I'm getting tired of people saying "Music nowadays is terrible." So, you're saying, every modern song is terrible? That's billions of songs, it's impossible for ALL of them to be terrible.

- Brostep sounds like garbage. I only allow few exceptions.

- Progressive House > Electro-House (Electro-House is still alright.)

- I believe Jazz is underrated compared to the popularity of EDM, Metal and other genres.

- Deadmau5 is an alright musician, but he's nothing to get crazy about.

- The 80's was an ordinary decade for music. There was nothing great, nor bad about it.

I made a thread about that. I can't stand it when people say "music was SO MUCh better back then".

- I believe Jazz is underrated compared to the popularity of EDM, Metal and other genres.
I kinda agree. EDM and metal are both about equally as popular.

- The 80's was an ordinary decade for music. There was nothing great, nor bad about it.
99% of all the good 80's music was underground. There was SO MUCH shit in the 80's.

Anyways,

I kinda like country

I don't listen to the radio

CDs>MP3s

People who say things like  "American music is shit, European music is way better" piss me off.

People who care so much about the geographic location of bands/artists get me irked. Why does it matter? If its good music its good. If its shit, its shit. Country of origin isn't going to affect that.

Eric Whitacre is one of the finest choral composers of the 21st century but he is an unbelievable dick and ripped of Morten Laudrisen a bit too.

Tony Levin > John Myung

As much as I enjoy his innovation Jordan Rudess needs to stop with all this iPad bullshit

I feel bad that Eddie Van Halen went from being the best guitarist to the most overrated guitarist to laughable compared to todays guitarists. He's actually one of the best there is simply because of the innovation he added to the instrument.

I prefer the lighter side of prog compared to the heavier stuff.

Serj Tankian sucks monkey testicles.

The guitarist from Creed is underrated as fuck. (i don't even know his name)

I'm sorry to all you Gangnam Style fans but I just find the song way too overrated and I cannot understand how it received 1 billion views. I was on the train one time when someone's ringtone had Gangnam Style and everyone on the train starting dancing to it. Ridiculous.

And like many people on this thread have said, I find it incredibly annoying when people say that today's music sucks. Especially when you go on classic videos like Nirvana and see that being the top comment.

Yes, because Slipknot are the only Metal band the world that wears costumes.

Alright here goes...

Like so many others in this thread, I too hate it when someone says “Music was better back in the day” (my dad is one of them). To me that sounds like “I'm too lazy and uninterested to even TRY to find something I like”. It's not weird that they have this opinion though, as they probably only hear the popular music of today, to which I can agree, it can be a lot better.

However, I can kinda relate to it as well. I grew up in the 90's and from what I can remember the popular music was way more silly and fun then. Yeah the music was still crap, but the lyrics of some of the famous ones are just so childish and unserious, they become great songs.

On another note, I don't agree with people saying stuff like Justin Beiber, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and the like are talentless. They can clearly sing, and IMO they do it pretty damn well. It's a shame that the music they produce is so boring to listen to though.

Other than that:

1. I don't like the brony music all that much. Everything sounds just about the same.

2. I feel there's way too much metal bands these days.

3. Flea is kind of overrated, great bassist, just gets a little to much attention IMO.

Eh, depends what you mean by "pop", really. If by "pop", you mean mainstream (popular) music, then I sort of agree. Not because I'm OH SO DIFFERENT, but just because the majority of it bores me. Saying that, there's a buck load of popular music that I do like.

However, if you mean "pop" as in the genre, then I disagree. I'm especially a huge fan of

, myself.

Being a Black Metal fanboy myself, I can assure you that not all Black Metal has poor recording quality. Black Metal comes in countless of styles and flavors, and is probably one of the most diverse, experimental, and interesting Metal genres.

At least, it is in my opinion.
