Well I think maybe their ancestors did and they kept that feature. I think there are some PegasusxEarthpony/Unicorn relationships plus it would be very unconfortable ^_^

It would be uncomfortable for anypony walking around underneath them! Where's my umbrella??? I think you may be right though. It's more of an evolutionary holdover from primitive pony times. Although it has been established that Rainbow Dash can fly at trans-rainboom speed while carrying FOUR PONIES! I'm sure she could manage to carry an Earth pony, if she REALLY liked him!
