On this thread we shall discuss whether or not we believe Djent is an actually genre.

I think Djent is a genre because in my definition a genre is a different sound of music, and djent really does sound like it's own type of Music to me tongue.png

Here is the video "Sh*t Djent kids Say" (WARNING THERE IS SOME LANGUAGE FOR YOU YOUNGER PEOPLE!)

So what is everyone's opinion on it?

No, it's not a genre. The whole video was nothing more than clips of some random guitarist with long hair saying random crap out of his mouth.

But, I will give this "genre" credit. At least he didn't used auto-tune.

I'm not all that knowledgeable about the whole djent thing, the only djent band I've listened to is Periphery, but I don't know if it's a genre, it just seems like a different style maybe, idk. :/

Djent isn't a genre as it is only a style of Progressive Metal, I'm not good at explaining it at all, though there are some other people on this forum who could do a good explanation of it.

I mean it is really watered-down mathcore in a way, sometimes fusing post-dubstep and other EDM stuff with guitars but there's not much djent-exclusive things. Just listen to bands like Ion Dissonance or Botch. It might be a scene or niche, but it's not really that much of a genre if you think about it.

It's a genre if you say it's a genre, I suppose. Everything is so compartmentalized in this day and age. If nothing else, its a descriptor that can help people decide whether they will listen to a band or not. Personally my favorite Genre is Post-Prog-Death-Crust-Thrash-Djent-Mod-Sludge-Doom-Stoner-NWOBM-Arm-Grind-Metal-TwoStep-Noise-Industrial-Math-Power-Southern-Folk-Hippopotamus-Core

... Everything else is for Poseurs.

It shouldn't be a genre, but it is because enough people have started referring to a specific sound as a genre. It's not just Progressive Metal, it's a specific type of Progressive Metal which is known for the Djent sound and it's technical complexity, especially with regards to rhythm.

I'd have to say no. It's a guitar playing technique, and some bands who use it also have similar musical styles. It's a sub-genre at best.

No it is a sub-genre of Progressive Metal. It's not a genre all it's own. Djent is a great sub-genre, but it isn't large enough yet to be called a genre.

A sub-genre is definitely a genre. You can have a sub-genre OF a sub-genre. It's in it's name for crissakes. Just because dub techno, french house, dub reggae, and euro disco came from a larger genre pool doesn't mean that a subgenre doesn't have grouping of similar sounds, commonality, and meaning. That's all a genre ever has been. When enough bands all do something that's different from the rest but with enough common elements a genre is born. When enough people all use that same term and keep using it, it sticks. It becomes its own reality despite the naysayers.

Do I think it's a genre? I don't have to...because enough people have argued that it is and enough people believe.

It's got a wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djent#Reception with 20 article references

It has a rym entry (after replacing Math Metal) with a lot of discussion

Genres don't exist to justify majority opinion, they often exist to satisfy a small minority that like, make, and appreciate that music. Djent really isn't any different in that regard.
