Should Rarity get a boyfriend?

Forlong

Well we have to remember the main audience of the show, little girls. Yes the Brony/Pegasister community has grown to where our interests, and wants are taken into consideration to an extent. However do you really want the show to emphasize the need for a relationship? That you have to have a special somepony to matter? I don't think they should. If they wanted to hint at the Mane 6 having some very close friends of the opposite genders, this still leaves it open for the fandom, and really doesn't push the misconception that romantic relationships are necessary to define a person or pony in this case.

I feel like the mane 6 shouldn't be in relationships because it would take away from the show. There all also apparently teens, and I think Rarity is too focused on her dream of being a famous fashion designer and a boyfriend might just hold her back. I could always see her dating fancy pants though.

Personally, I wouldn't want Rarity having a boyfriend, it just does not seem necessary. Also I have a soft spot in my heart for Rarity so I wouldn't want to see her with anyone else. img-1408322-1-dry.png  Haha No one is good enough for Rarity!!

I had the same thought about Fluttershy, lol. I like Rarity, and seeing how she seems more mature than the others, she would need a pony that is very special. The way I think it would play out would be someone that is her opposite to an extent, and catches her off guard.

I thought the show was intended for families? I've heard that before... img-1408338-1-huh.png

Anyways, I have mixed feelings on this. It's been said, it would mess with the show. We're talking about My Little Pony, not some teenage drama. :P

But then again, it wouldn't hurt to try. :)

I'm just sick of people saying we can't have more mature themes like dealing with loss or disability because the target demographic can't possibly comprehend or handle it.

Iron Giant, Bambi, Star Wars (it was definitely made with kids in mind, so don't tell me it wasn't a family movie), Coraline, Paranorman, E.T., Neverending Story, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Batman: The Animated Series are all proof that a piece of family entertainment shouldn't limit what it can do because "kids can't take it", and that those kind of themes can work if done with grace.

I'LL BE RARITIES BOYFRIEND!!!!!!!

Ahem, anyway I also think it would be awesome to have a pony develop a crush, it could teach kids about liking someone.

And then the pony dumps Rairity after 4 months of being in a relationship and show kids what the REAL world is like.

No. That idea, along with Twilight's newly-gained wings, would only deteriorate the Mane 6 as friends, and thus breaking the theme of the show. Nothing good would come from it other than a slight appeal to an older generation. I mean, hints here and there about a relationship is fine (I love AS'ing from Pokemon with a passion partially because of that), but having an open relationship would turn MLP:FiM into some Bratz show, or something along the lines. It would just be awkward to watch the show that has its appeal in childish fun and antics, and to see one of the main characters walk in with a very special somepony.

Also, as some people have mentioned earlier, it would break Spike's heart. I can't see Spike recovering from that, unless the writers pull some heavy BS.

If I was a writer for MLP:FiM, I'd only do it if I ran out of ideas. Scratch that, I would do it if someone was holding a gun to my head, because at that point, I'd just end the show rather than milk it.

EDIT: A crush I'm okay with, by the way. Just not a relationship.

If I see Rarity hook up with anyBODY, I would say Spike. Whenever those two are near each other, I can just feel the chemicals bubbling between them. :3

Ya this got a lot of replys fast. I've actually been thinking about this topic for a while but had not gotten around to asking the question.

And honestly, not just Rarity but any of the main 6

I think they should introduce a boyfriend into the mix. There are many ways to approach this topic in ways. They've already started on this path with the whole hearts and hooves episode and snippets in others. It wouldn't be that far of a hop, skip, and a jump into it.

Rarity would be the easiest one to start with and they can work their way around

No.

Why Rarity?

Why not AJ?

Why not Dash?

None of the characters should have boyfriends. Rarity, i don't see why she'd be the only one to get a boyfriend, honestly.

Not sure if romance in this show is a good idea (there WAS Shining Armor's and Cadence's wedding, but its main purpose was to introduce changelings); I believe that stuff should remain in fanfics and such (and don't tell me that the show's staff don't read a few every once in Luna's blue moon).

P.S. - I believe the correct term is COLTfriend.

It dosen't have to just be Rarity that gets a coltfriend, Applejack could get one and it could be yours truly. But all joking aside though I would have no objection to any of the mane 6 having romantic interests so long as it dosen't take up the entire focus of the show, alot of great cartoons have had romance as a theme yet have done it in such a way to where it wasn't too tacky or forced. And I might add that love has been touched on in the show before, Rarity met her "prince charming" and found out he was a jerk which was actually pretty funny though Rarity deserves a lot better than that. There was the hilarious debacle with the love poison in Hearts and Hooves Day and of course the Canterlot Wedding two parter.

But seriously though I would see Rarity as the most likely as so far she is the only mane 6 character to show a romantic interest in any pony I could see it as being plausible for the other 5 as well. I could imagine Twilight liking some stallion and asking Cadence for some advice on how to talk to him, I could picture Rainbow Dash becoming liking a stallion yet being a tad reluctant at first to admit it Pinkie Pie would probably buy her crush all these gifts and treats and might become somewhat of a stalker.

Well unless he can become a book I can't see Twilight with a boyfriend. ;)

They don't need to play down/dumb for kids but it doesn't need to be graphic either. They can write stories that can deal with this issue in ways most kids will undetstand. All it takes is a little tact and common sense.

What Rarity needs is a more down to "earth" kind of pony

*not necessarily an earth pony if you catch my drift*

Yes, I remember when I got a girlfriend and all my friendships were ruined...

Wait, that wasn't what happened at all.

Rarity already has a boyfriend. Fiance, actually. It's very serious.

I'm kind of an unabashed Sparity supporter, so I'm admittedly a bit biased in this discussion. They can only keep up the whole one sided crush thing for so long, especially in a show all about character development and growth.

All I'm saying is that any romantic relationship doesn't have to be explicit or super serious or anything. Why does everyone automatically assume that it will be like that scene in Anchorman where they're riding the rainbow?

I'm referencing the short at the end of that Rarity mini-series. Spike tells that one hick pony that Rarity already has a boyfriend fiance.

I personally can see Rarity becoming busy between her relationship with her boyfriend and the Mane 6 and working with her dresses. This would typically lead to conflict. However, knowing the writers, I can see an episode trying to improve this, but as I said before, it'd be just awkward, in my opinion, to have any pony in a relationship. It just doesn't seem like something involved in the main focus of the show: Learning about friendship.

Ehhh.... No.

She has standards, you know, she had a crush on ONE pony for who knows how long, she doesn't seem to look for anyone.

He'd have to be a brilliantly written character to even consider him dating Rarity. It seems like it wouldn't really be neccesary, and that if it is done, it better be done well.

It's a good idea, and it's possible! But I don't think their would be any room for boyfriends on MLP:FIM. I feel it just wouldn't fit in right. I think it's quite funny watching Rarity having dreams about her "prince charming". Besides, Rarity+Spike all the way. :)

I can see Rarity, or another one of the Mane 6, having one episode where they date a stallion.  That would make for a fun story and show once and for all that they are young adults with an interest in relationships.  But I don't think it should go past one episode.  Several cartoons, especially anime, already have plenty of love stories.  MLP:FiM has been successful without taking that path.  It's refreshing to see young people who are happy without needing a boyfriend or a girlfriend to feel complete.  :)

I don't think they should. If they wanted to hint at the Mane 6 having some very close friends of the opposite genders, this still leaves it open for the fandom, and really doesn't push the misconception that romantic relationships are necessary to define a person or pony in this case.

I agree.  There's no need to impose an overt boyfriend-girlfriend relationship in a program that doesn't have a need for it.  Fans already read between the lines and have countless shippings set up as it is.  Leaving a gray area between platonic and romance allows fans the freedom to form their own headcanon.

. I could imagine Twilight liking some stallion and asking Cadence for some advice on how to talk to him

I would really love to see tome good married family role models to be more prominent in show actually.

I know it's fandom and stuff, but I'm seriously sick of free ''love'' becoming fannon. Sick of filly fooling, to be honest. And Bratzy relationships. That's not what we wanna teach little girls. We wanna teach family being a value.

Cadence being the ruler of love and being a newlywed actually could make a lot of good lessons. Or any other married pony couple for goodness sake.

For example Twilight getting obsessed with some colt, trying to rush it and Cadence appearing as a mentor, explaining what is important in making a relationship last (maybe with flashbacks from the time she and Shining Armor got to know each other) and that a successful relationship is a one that results in marriage, but it's ok to make mistakes and not always the first colt who shows a little attention is the one and only.

Or Applejack dealing with Big Mac starting a serious relationship and being jealous to his special somepony, and after her trying to sabotage this relationship in the end her and Big Mac having a heart to heart talk about how their parents loved each other so much, and now it's time for Big Mac to start his own family to carry on the Apple family tradition.

Or Pinkie Pie becoming an annoyance for Cake family, messing into the way they are rising their twins, giving counterproductive advice, disturbing their privacy, and in the end learning that family is a unit that an outsider shouldn't be messing with, that she can be a close friend, but she shouldn't get between family members.

Or Rainbow Dash developing a boastful attitude that she will never have family, and that's for sissies and taking time to understand that she is a product of a happy union of two ponies (And get more of Rainbow Dad wub.png  in the episode)

Or Fluttershy being intimidated as some stallion shows her attention and panicking and learning to deal with the fact that someone can have romantic interest in her

OR Rarity finally dealing with the Spike thing (goodness, he's a baby dragon, they are a different age, different maturity level and different species, Sparity is not going to work!)

Ok, I'm ready for the ''an adult mare and an adult stallion in wedlock is a narrow understanding of family'' argument, and here my only defense is ''It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, and it should stay that way!'' and my faith in what is right and wrong. Let's not start the argument here on thread, but if someone wants to discuss it, I can say I have been in both camps and anywhere in between, currently have close homosexual friends, and I'm ready to discuss it on PM's

Yes! I can see it now.Rarity finds a boyfriend and Spike is so insainly jealous that he grows to the size of a mountain and eats him...

Okay maybe not. But I'm sure there's already a fanfic just like that somewhere knowing you guys.. geeze.

I think it's agood idea, but I think that if Rarity did get a boyfriend, that he would still only be a background pony. Like, say Twilight goes over to Rarity's and he might be talking to her when she walks in but not actually have that much significance to the show.
