Queen Cassie 3,057 January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 If there's one thing that bothers me rather significantly, it's hearing people say something along the lines of "FIM is the manliest show ever." No. No it is not. It is, by any definition, girly. Now, granted, I generally reject gender stereotypes. I'm unusual in that regard I realize, so I still occasionally use terms like manly and girly, but I use those terms only to refer to the stereotypes they define. Lauren Faust specifically set out to make this show as an example of why girly does not have to mean bad. There was actually a great article on feminism and FIM posted in one of the EQD nightly roundups within the last couple weeks or so...I wish I could find it because it backs up significantly what I'm saying. Basically it talked about how in general, girly meant bad or boring, because feminism throughout much of its history was geared towards showing that women could do anything men could do and could be interested in the things men have. So men have all the cool things, and girls are stuck with terrible vapid entertainment, like the previous generations of My Little Pony. Then you have extremely rare cases like FIM, a show that is definitely girly, but that also proves that girly is not bad. Nor should it be. Buck the stereotype, my friends. Don't call the show manly. Call it girly and point out that not only is that not a bad thing, but neither should it matter. 9 Used to be known on here as Kyronea. Want to read psychological analyses of the Mane Six? ~asdf~ 110 January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 I'm the second biggest brony I know and I'm in Muay Thai juijutsu classes Personally I am gay, well... Bisexual actually, but gay is a good generic term. My enjoyment of FiM has nothing to do with that, while it may say something about my age at heart it certainly doesn't affect who I am attracted to same here I'm bi and my friends are ok with it so If being bi doesn't make me girly in their opinoins then why should FiM
Stoner Spike 185 January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 The show itself is girly, there's no questioning that. What more would you expect out of a cartoon named My Little Pony, regardless of the line of toys? You'd think it was for girls, and it is; but that doesn't mean it's a bad show or it makes you girly for watching it. Last time I checked, TV shows don't change your masculinity, nor your sexual orientation. 1 Yo Applejack... Y'alright?

RD_is_best_pony123 10 January 30, 2012 Share January 30, 2012 Im comfortable enough with myself to admit its a girl show and that I enjoy it. Even though I heard it wasn't made solely for little girls.

Kyreth 194 January 30, 2012 Share January 30, 2012 It goes without saying that the show is the opposite of what our society would call 'manly'. But bravery is a trait generally considered manly and it takes a whole lot of bravery to be a fan of something that goes against the social convention to such an extreme. I can't make signatures. Colon Leftbracket 971 January 30, 2012 Share January 30, 2012 (edited) ...and then there's me for a counter example! I've lived with women all my life since my brothers were never really home and my dad went in and out of jail so I wasn't really raised by the wolves... I've adored girly things my whole life, perhaps more than I'd like to admit it! I adore bright colors although my wardrobe is full of dull black colors... Most of my friends are girls and not in the type of way a guy would be friends with a girl to try and get in their pants, so to speak, but I just generally find girls to be better friends! I LOVE hair! I love hair more than most of my girl friends! Shame I decided to cut it in the summer... what was I thinking? I have recently developed bisexual interests... though not publicly! I am dedicating 2012 to buying VERY colorful clothing. I need some light greens, purples, sky blues, and PINK! I need PINK! Perhaps some Brony clothes will do the trick! The only reasons why I was surprised that I became a Brony was that I never get into fandoms and I was surprised that a show like MLP could actually be good in overall quality! So from my experience personally being the only Brony I know (and one friend, girl, who likes the fandom) that pretty much the girliest guys are Bronies though I know that that is NOT true! Java Jive 440 January 30, 2012 Share January 30, 2012 I've seen bodybuilder types reviewing entire episodes on youtube, it doesn't mean much. If some people wouldnt perceive the show as a threat to their manhood for some reason, the fandom could or would be even bigger. But dont let them start with the intro. Let's go downtown. hargleblarg 1 January 31, 2012 Share January 31, 2012 I'm not the manliest of men, but I consider myself rather masculine. However I admit that the show is for girls and I like it, it's one of the few shows on these days that isn't all "doom and gloom". It makes me feel happy inside :3
Radiance64 7,053 January 31, 2012 Share January 31, 2012 I don't care if it's what people think is 'girly', I watch the show because of its high quality, and not for any other reason.

I have a feeling my friends would act the same way, that's why I'm goin to a brony meetup soon xD. I have a feeling that hanging out with people that are already fans is going to be easier than trying to explain it to my other friends/family. Awesomeness = at least 20% Cooler. Apple Bloom 2,933 January 31, 2012 Share January 31, 2012 (edited) Masculinity shouldn't even be a factor. A good show is good whether you're manly or not. You just have to be open minded enough to watch it without caring that you're not part of the target audience. As for myself, I think I'm pretty manly but it's not like I try to be. I'm...*shades* Becoming Popular. YEEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!! (Seriously though, I don't see why everyone is liking my post all of a sudden.) Edited January 31, 2012 by Apple Bloom Signature by @Nico. Perfect_Harmony 58 January 31, 2012 Share January 31, 2012 Does it even matter if it is a show made for girls? As long as you enjoy what you're doing it doesn't even matter. You shouldn't let other people's opinions shape yours.
Sheogorath 1,155 January 31, 2012 Share January 31, 2012 I am also pretty masculine sort, athletic, hairy, have beard, will travel... And I enjoy ponies as a wonderful balancing factor to my life with their more softer values and innocent themes. As a man of hard science and concerned with objective and skeptical approach to things I like to have something cute to squee over too so it all does not become a gray slate of hard cold stone of a life.
