ThatHandsomeStallion 6 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 I've heard my fair share of theories, but I want to hear more. How did Derpy get her walleyes (background-wise, not actually) Whether it's something that you've heard or one you came up with on your own, I just love listening to the various ides that people have to offer. Betez 1,734 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 I feel like maybe Derpy was born with an eye disability. Maybe she just has a lazy eye. Actually, I think that would work. That's my theory. Leafeon 2,702 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 Darling, there are TONS of theories on this. The most popular is that she was born like that. Which I think makes the most sense, but some other theories beg to differ. Like that she had an injury, and now one eye doesn't function properly. There's a few others, but I don't really remember them at this very moment in time. Rainbow Dash Loyalty 1,275 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 I think the most believable theory is that she was born like that, had a hard time in school then later learned to live with it and be happy, ~Signature created by Chaotic Discord~
Guest May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 I don't see how there's any other feasible explanation other than 'she was born that way'. Aside from that though isn't it rather frivolous though? Whatever story you make up to explain something that wasn't written might as well be the real explanation because well...it isn't explained by the writers. Sapphire Quill 1,186 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 (edited) Sweetheart, There's way too many of them floating around, mostly that she was born like that, or she had a massive accident or such, it's just up to us what we think, everythings right in my mind, ~Sapphire Edited May 18, 2013 by Sapphire Quill ✧ Made by Azura, Much Appreciated ✧
Batbrony 16,055 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 I could come up with some crazy, convoluted (and humorous) theory if I wanted to, but honestly my head-canon's always been that Derpy was just born that way. Seems logical and reasonable enough an explanation to me. "You'll hunt me. You'll condemn me, set the dogs on me. Because that's what needs to happen. The Dandy 73 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 Well personality, I think muffins are best in choclate form, using to much flour is never good as it really stops any moistness, I also love when people join different versions for instance, joing blueberry and choclate chips, or white choclate an carrot, delish. Also they should only be in the oven for 15 min tops becuase they are a lot more soft then. I would also like to point out they are best enjoyed with a can of milk! 2 Everyone wants happiness, no one wants pain, but you can't have a rainbow, without a little rain. Smoothie 4 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 Well, it seems logic that Derpy was born like this. As you can see on this pic :3 But it's always fun to make up fun stories about experiments and theories... 1 ~Made by Kyoshi
Orablanco Account 3,707 May 18, 2013 Share May 18, 2013 There's no real reason. She's just a clumsy pony who with a natural inclination towards being wall-eyed. Princess Lona 382 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 I think her eyes are normal, but she has learned how to point them in different directions and she just does it all the time to show off. Thrashy 2,800 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 (edited) I'd always just assumed the "born that way" theory, which seems like the most sound one to me personally. A minor defect at birth can most definitely cause such a condition, but an accident? I'm hard-pressed to come up with a physical accident that would cause one's eyes to do that, other than one that inflicted some level of brain damage. The thought of a brain-damaged Derpy is not only unpleasant and sad, but would also give soccer moms another thing to bitch about on behalf of actual sufferers of brain damage (who probably wouldn't care one way or the other). Plus, the "born this way" theme seems to be the most relatable way to take it, as most of us probably have some aspect of ourselves that we wished was different at some point, but have since come to accept and love. I think this comic wraps up that sentiment quite nicely. With FEELS. Edited May 19, 2013 by Lowline
Sugar Pea 2,682 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 A theory I heard was that she was born this way...I think the whole "Science project gone wrong" is very unlikely. If that was the case she would have no eyes at all...lol ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ
Blue Moon 6,341 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 Yeah, I'll have to agree with some of the other posts here and say she was most likely just born with them. It seems like the most logical conclusion. Autumn Blue Moon Clear Skies Summer
Shanks 10,816 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 Never been too big a fan of the "disability" theory, because it kinda means the soccer moms were right. Not really, just because a character is disabled dosen't automatically make them a walking talking stereotype and that is one of the main things the really bothers me about the whole Derpy situation is that so many people assume that is the case. I don't think Derpy is mentally challenge it is likely though that she is falsely perceived to be due to her walled eyes and clumsy child like nature but even if that is the case simply portraying something and making a joke out of it at other peoples expense are two very different things. It seems to me like the most likely answer is the most simple one, that she was born with it. Many people in real life are born with those kind of eyes and with how humanlike these ponies are it is entirely believable that some of them would be born with conditions like that. Ilovepegasi 6 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 She was probably born with a lazy eye as most popular theories. But a good question is how did she get her Cutie Mark? And I think that is the most unique thing about Derpy is her background.

Many people in real life are born with those kind of eyes and with how humanlike these ponies are it is entirely believable that some of them would be born with conditions like that. While I will always believe that what happened was an overreaction, I always thought Derpygate was not about the fact that she was even there and people didin't want to look at a disabled character, it was about people thinking the show was making fun at a disabled characters expense. While we know that she is just a clumsy pony, the scene was about a wonky character with a stereotypical "stupid voice" being a burden on others and featured another character being clearly annoyed by her. And to be honest, if it was later revealed that the character in question was the show's depiction of a disabled pony, i'd understand the grievances people had. I love Derpy, and I love that scene, but she shouldn't be disabled beyond not being able to see well. That's why my personal characterization of her is her being bubbly and clumsy, but bright. That's why my personal characterization of her is her being bubbly and clumsy, but bright. Yes and that is mine as well and I do see what you are saying but the one sort of objection I had was making Derpy disabled making them "right". I do agree that it is best that Derpy not be confirmed to be disabled because that would end up playing into the complainers hands which could make it less likely for characters like Derpy to appear in other shows in the future. That is why I think the best approach is that Derpy is not but is falsely perceived as such due to her eyes and clumsy, child like nature it would if done right accomplish the goal of teaching people that it is okay to be different, make alot of the people who identify and relate to Derpy both disabled and not happy, reinforce the lesson from Bridle Gossip of not judging others and not feed the complainers. And I really think you overestimate most of the complainers I mean if they really care so much about disabled people than why not actually ask what they thought about it before automatically assuming that all of them would take offense and try to speak on their behalf without even really listening to them? Alot of people who are seen as different both disabled and not identify with Derpy and yet those opinions were completely ignored by the complainers in favor of an "off with her head" attitude. I find the implication of all disabled people having some kind of hive mind to be very condescending, rude and offensive. I know what it is like to be called stupid, retarded ect and yet why do their opinions matter and mine doesn't? 1 Rarity Get's Cockroaches
That DJ Pony 15 May 19, 2013 Share May 19, 2013 (edited) Derpy was a real smart filly. She got good grades, got into higher classes, and she wanted to become a scientist. She was mixing the chemicals very, very, carefully. Then suddenly, Rainbow Dash executed a Sonic Rainboom from outside the school and gained her cutie mark. The sudden blast startled Derpy, and she spilled the chemicals, making a huge explosion. When she woke her eyes were mixed, and she hit her head hard enough for her to forget all he education. Doctor Whooves came into the scene with his Tardis. (sorry if i spelled that wrong) He was frustrated, and he said something about coming in to late, and then he just left. Derpy had no idea what just happend. Then she became a mailmare, and continues to do what she does to this very day. And here is a comic to back up my theory. hawkflame 3,310 May 20, 2013 Share May 20, 2013 IMO, she was just born that way. No need for a crazy theory of any sort, lots of people in real life are wall-eyed. IronPonyApplejack 318 May 20, 2013 Share May 20, 2013 But yeah...I agree with the previous posters on her simply being born that way. Part of it is that I hate to think that something horrible happened to her that messed her eyes up like that. The thought just makes me sad.
