So I realized that the Paper Mario games are probably some of my favorite games ever (The first two anyway).

I decided to make a topic about it, so any Paper Mario fans can discuss the game, and I made some polls that you can discuss as well.

I haven't played Super Paper Mario, so I'm leaving it out of the polls, but you guys can still discuss it.

I love both of the first two games, but I would say I like The Thousand Year Door the best. My favorite partners are Koops and Yoshi. My favorite levels are Glitzville, Twilight Town, and Poshley Heights.

If you haven't played either of the first two Paper Mario games, then go play them right now, cause you are really missing out.

Honestly the only paper mario i've played is Super paper mario, I think despite being nothing like the 1st two, it still had its charm. And I think it was still a pretty good game.

However I've yet to get around to playing the other two paper marios.

I really should, but its just one of those games on my long list of games I never played that I should :P.

Dude...what the heck are you doing...go play the first two. Or at least play The Thousand Year Door, cause that one is even better than the first one in my opinion. It might even be like my favorite game of all time, like for real.

Great topic, but where's Ms. Mowz in the TTYD partners section? :P

Yeah, TTYD is definitely my favourite. It simply defines what a game should be. Clear-cut purpose and point, charming locations and well-polished combat. After playing it, you carry that piece of charm with you; it's so distinguished from other games because it does everything right. Admiral Bobbery is the best partner :)

I especially always loved Pirate's Grotto from TTYD. It feels like it should be in a Zelda game. It's a true dungeon, where you're going deeper and deeper into a cave rather than up and up a building or tree. (No disrespect to Tubba Blubba's castle or Boggly Woods, two of my other favourite places!) The little pieces and segments of shipwreck and abandoned chaos really makes it atmospheric, despite everything being made of paper. Only this series could pull that off.

If the Pit of 100 Trials were on that list, I'd have voted for that too. That was super fun. You feel both elated upon completing it because it's so damn difficult, but also a bit sullen because now you know you can defeat anything with ease :3

Well I know for a fact that @Jonke is a fan of Paper Mario. Sadly, I have not played the game myself, I barely even know what the games are about :P

I'm on the forums silly goose :P.

No, but seriously I do need to get em, its just idk, I'm a big procrastinator, and I don't own either one anyways. So i'd have to go order them. Plus i'm still saving for my new computer(One that doesn't suck), so i don't really want to spend money.

And I'm going to band camp to starting tomorrow, so yeah.

I know there good though, I hear about it alot, i just haven't got around to buying them for some reason.

I have not Played the Nintendo 64 version, but i have played The thousand year door. It was a good game, I'll admit, but it really wasn't all that outstanding to me. It really doesn't stack up against other Mario titles such as Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Mario 64, or even Super Mario Sunshine.

But again, I still liked it for what it was. I have actually recently been wanting to go back and ply it, but now I am unable to thanks to my sisters ruining my disc. >:l

I actually didn't realize you could have Ms. Mowz as a partner until I read about it on the Paper Mario wiki ._.

I actually don't like Boggly Woods, it's my least favorite part of the game.

I've only played Paper Mario on the N64.

Honestly, I couldn't really vote. I mean, I like the game, but I don't know what I like best about it.

W-what? How can you dislike the adorable little Punies? </3 When the troupe of 101 joined my party, I had so much fun deliberately dropping them off of cliffs and stuff. And when they fall into the bubble bath and float up in bubbles... they're so cute n.n

I just found the whole level to be kind of annoying. I kept losing one of the punies, and then I hated the part when you had to go in the room and attack the swarm of enemies, whatever they were called.

So I started clicking the partners... until I realized I was clicking every box! I loved pretty much all the partners from the first two games, so I am going to click only my ABSOLUTE favourite partners...

Bow: She just oozes personality and I think she's a really funny character. Her character is very well defined in the plot of the third chapter and she's also a very useful character. I also can't help but love her relationship with bootler as well!

Koops: Such a lovable pathetic character, I can't exactly pin point the exact reason why I like him, I guess I'll just pin it up to personality.

Now as for the best levels...

Shy guy's toy box: I mean, just look at it. All the fun colours and filled with pathetically easy to defeat shy guys! There were also plenty of secrets to find around this stage and I really liked that you rode a train around the place. I was big into trains at the time...

Glitzville or Poshley Heights: I'm conflicted. I loved the train mystery to death, but the glitz pit was unbelievably awesome as well. Both had some pretty funny moments, I particularly loved Pennington constantly refering to you as Luigi.

But yes, both games were fantastic. I noticed there was a lot more backtracking in TTYD though so the original game barely wins because of that and nostalgic value.

Those are my absolute favorite Paper Mario levels. I love the whole story of Glitzville where you are trying to figure out who is behind everything, and I love the train part where you are like a detective solving a mystery.

I prefer TTYD. It is just like the original, except, of course, with a different story, better graphics, and more gameplay enhancements. It is a very good example of what a sequel should be. It had just enough new features and just enough old gameplay mechanics, imo.

Honestly the only paper mario i've played is Super paper mario, I think despite being nothing like the 1st two, it still had its charm.

Super Paper Mario, for example, while not being a very bad game in particular (I wouldn't praise it too much, but I did bother playing it all the way through, so it was good enough), it was a bad sequel. Although, to be fair, the title is rather different from the first two, so I was not expecting an actual sequel out of it. However, it still hardly felt like the first two at all. The only thing, really, was the papered worlds theme. And the fact that Mario has a hammer. There's really not much similarity between this and the first two games.

I really can't think of any new mechanics added in TTYD that was a bad idea/decision. Everything that was newly implemented was both unique and executed very nicely. Everything made sense. Everything. It is one of my favourite games that I've played many, many times, and have recently been considering playing again.

The worlds in the original Paper Mario were good. They were each themed very nicely, and everything just fit. However, things kind of lacked creativity. We had 3 castle-like places (Tubba Blubba's, Bowser's, and Koopa Bros. Fortress (I count it as a castle :W)), and we even had a bit of dungeon-y like places again in Dry Dry Desert. This kind of got old, and it takes away some replay value.

TTYD, though... Wow. I don't even know where to begin.

Everything was done amazingly. We had castles, woods, trains, boats, islands, arenas, SPACE...

There was a very good variety, and this makes for great replay value, because I feel the, "Oh, I can't wait for this awesome new unique thing next chapter," unlike in Paper Mario. Well, I mean, it's there, but not for every chapter. Shy Guy's Toy Box was unique and fun, and I always look forward to that. And I'm not entirely sure why, but I find Lavalava Island to be great. I think it really hit home with the mystery aspect. I wasn't sure what I was going to face in that jungle on my first time through, and it was just kind of exciting, as if I were actually exploring.

Glitzville and Poshley Heights were my favourites from TTYD. Glitzville was just, imo, a very neat thing to add, and was a pretty unique idea for the game. Poshley Heights (more like the train) was amazing, because... well... it was on a train. I found this to be absolutely amazing. I look forward to the 3 day ride every time I replay it. It was such a cool thing to add, and whoever came up with the idea deserves rispektz, mang.

TTYD also just felt smoother, overall, in gameplay. I'm guessing a lot of this has to do with the limitations of the N64, but still. The battles felt better, because they were both just smoother in frame rate and in other motions, but because everything seemed to link up together better than in the original. Stylish moves, for example, were great. It actually felt like star power was integrated in the battles, unlike in the original. It felt mechanical and very boring in Paper Mario. The only real way to get it up quickly was to do that wish move thing, which I did not like. Otherwise, I just gradually went up slow af. It hardly felt useful even when I had a chance to use it. TTYD, though, improved on this, and I actually used the star abilities much more.

The partner system in TTYD is also better. Health for allies. Makes sense, right? That's how it should have been in the original.

The themes in TTYD were also just done better (which is a pretty good accomplishment, because Paper Mario had really great theming). It stayed truer to the "paper" idea by making a lot more of the scenery out of paper. Paper Mario just made it feel like Mario and his partner and other characters were made out of paper in this regular 3D world. Kinda boring. Also, the world theming in TTYD was a bit better. Not too much (it couldn't improve much from the last game), but still a bit. The variety in TTYD makes the theming seem a bit better than it actually is, unlike Paper Mario.

The partners in TTYD are kind of a hit and miss thing.

In Paper Mario, you could use whichever partner you wanted to battle with, basically. Not a lot of enemies had spikes on their heads, for example, so you could use, really, whichever character you wanted. In TTYD, you actually had to use specific characters for specific enemies, or else your attacks were really just pretty useless. Some may call this better utilisation of the partners in TTYD, but I honestly found it to be a bit of a bother. I really liked Vivian because I could use her with a lot of enemies. Her attacks just kinda went through people's defenses, and she could hit basically any one on the screen, no matter where they were. Also, I thought she was sekushii when I was a kid and I still do.

Paper Mario really was a tonne of fun. I love it. I play it a lot, still, to this day. It was a very unique thing, and I can't find much to say bad about it. TTYD, though, is just an overall improvement in absolutely every manner. Everything great about Paper Mario was in TTYD. And then there was more. It's an overall better game, and I'm really feeling the urge to play it again, right now. :w

Comparing the Paper Mario series to the other games is a bit silly. It really comes down to preference in the gameplay, because basically, this is an Apple vs. Banana kind of thing. No one really wins over the other. Comparison Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine would make sense, just like comparing Paper Mario and TTYD would make sense, but comparing them all together is kinda just... eh. They just aren't the same, so it kinda seems silly to judge them all at once.

Yeah man, the Paper Mario games are the shit. :D

I vivdly remember the first one, it really is an excellent game now that I think about it and can recall quite a bit of every area, and I remember most of the party members being great although a couple of them escape me... it was the only one I finished though, I remember the final fight with Bowser being hard as balls. :o

As for TTYD, yes, it is a great game as well but I feel the first one was better and more memorable. Got very close to the end but never got the chance to finish it sadly.

Super Paper Mario I quite liked as well, I need to play it again and beat it though.

Oh, and I would have played Sticker Star but after hearing about how different it was it turned me off enough to avoid it, I still might at least try it sometime though.

So yeah, overall I'd say the first Paper Mario is my favorite, it's classic. :)

I agree it wasn't anything like the 1st two, its weird to have it even be in the same series frankly.

Still like I said, for the game it was i think it was good.

It made no sense when you look at it as a sequel though, I have no idea how the others are having not played them, but regardless having the gameplay totally changed for a sequel isn't really a good idea typically. Unless its a spinoff(Which I guess it was more of really if anything.)

Besides the paper aspect though, they could've been totally different games basically.

I do suppose you are right in that sense, although Super Mario Rpg Was incredibly similar to Paper Mario, aside from the main mechanic of being on the two dimensional plain in a three dimensional world.

I wish they would make another game similar to Super Mario RPG. And not the Mario & Luigi series. While I do like the two that I've played (Super Star Saga and Partners in Time), it's just... not the same.

I can't say how similar Paper Mario is to SMRPG, because I haven't fully played Super Mario RPG, yet. I played it a bit, but I just didn't feel the want to continue all the way through. I really should have another go at it, though.

Kirino nailed it and is exactly why i also prefer TTYD over the original. The variety in chapters and exploration that TTYD has is overall more enjoyable and less predictable, combined with things like the Pit of 100 Trials it had much greater replayability too. . :)

---------------------

I've all Paper Mario games, yes even Sticker Star and i think they're all great in their own way. I won't disagree that Sticker Star had various issues within the game, which unfortunately had to do with some "last minute" major changes that they thought were great for handheld purposes. All we can hope is they learn from it and step up with another entry before the gen wraps up.

Let's end with a nice picture. :)

I am thinking that the majority that picked TTYD as the best did so because they did not experience the first Paper Mario. I think that was unfortunate because the first is the far superior experience. If ponies do not see for themselves how the first story runs because of its graphical and technical limitations or because it’s old then that is their loss. Paper Mario was the first and it is the best. Everything about it is the best. It has the best locations. A lot of it was classical Mario scenery which made a lot of sense. From Koopa Bros. Fortress to Bowser’s Castle, there are simply a lot of great themes to choose from. Of course the hub set, Toad Town, was also well crafted with many things to do. Koopa Village was also reasonably interesting. The fields are amazing places and reminiscent of older Mario themes as well including the obstacles within. The Dry Dry Desert and Shiver Mountain themes stand out. There are no dungeons or fields that disappoint.

The Original Soundtrack is also exceptional as a whole. It captures the viewer’s attention from the beginning when the “Story of the Stolen Spirits” begins to play to the very end.

The interactivity doesn’t disappoint and presents fun and challenge throughout. The scenery is colorful, the story is Paper Mario’s finest, has superior nostalgic value and it’s great for repeated viewing.

The second story is good but unfortunately forgettable compared to the first. The characters are not remembered as well save Goombella. The Original Soundtrack has good selections but is unfortunately not as good as the first. The advancements in interactivity and visuals are merely the product of better technology and are not attributed to the experience being superior.

How did I miss this topic?

I really think Sugar Plum nailed this topic in the head, slammed it in, broke the hammer, got a new one, and nailed it some more. I don't have much else to add to it, really...

Personally playing both several times, I'm going to have to say that The Thousand Year door is superior. In terms of gameplay, storytelling, being unique, thematically, character-wise, and anything else you can think of it was a step above the original (which I attribute to the Gamecube's capabilities over the N64's, to be honest.)

My favorite partners would have to be Kooper and Lady Bow from the original, and Koops, Yoshi, Vivian, and Mz. Mowz from TTYD. Lady Bow was a crush of mine as a youngster, to be honest. Koops is my bro, Yoshi is the definition of a snarky little kid trying to act badass (which was funny and made for a very memorable character because of how relatable it was), Vivian is mega-cute and probably the most interesting character of them all, and Mz. Mowz was just cool because of her side-quests.

Favorite levels would easily be the Toy Box and Lavalavaland in the original. Both were memorable and interesting to play through, and didn't seem as cut-and-paste as the other levels seemed to be. The second game, my favorite was Glitzville bar none. Close behind were Twilight Town, Keelhaul Key, and Poshley Heights. Glitz Pit may be the most memorable place I've ever visited in a  video game, along with a unique cast of characters (Rawk Hawk, Grubba, Yoshi, and all the minor-leaguers you befriend). It's also got an element of creepy and mystery in it, especially towards the end. As a child, I was almost scared when I first saw what happened to Bandy Andy in the attic. Twilight Town was great because of everyone's favorite Duplighost. It was a very dark theme behind the entire chapter, which I thought was necessary in a game like this. Keelhaul Key was also very memorable. I had never expected to be marooned on an island and having to survive, meanwhile locating lost seafarers and delving  deeper and deeper into some ancient cavern. Cortez is one of my favorite bosses :3 Lastly, Poshley Heights. Specifically, the train ride there. I look forward to it every single time I play the game. I loved the mystery aspect to it, and the Smorgs. The trains stop was a very nice change of pace, and I really appreciated it.

All in all, both are phenomenal games though I'm definitely going to have to agree that TTYD is better than the original by quite a bit. It seemed alot more original and iconic than the original itself, and I played the original first. Paper Mario felt like the foundation to a great series, which TTYD proved that it could be. Super paper Mario was very disappointing to me. I don't like the direction the series began heading in with that game, though the story was solid enough. It was not a bad game, but, as Plum said, a bad sequel. By removing some of the best aspects of the series, you cannot hope to make a good sequel. I haven't played Sticker Star but from what I've seen, it suffers even more from straying from the original concept that made it so great. I still have my Mario and Luigi series that hasn't really changed much (we'll have to wait for Dream Team to know for sure), so that's always a plus.

That's the longest post I've made in a while, and did nothing other than state my opinions on a very low-level of thinking :|
