Recommended Posts

You all know the clumsy, wall-eyed Pegasus! The cute, grey and yellow mare. So, what are your opinions on her?

Is she cute?

Best Background Pony?

Is she offensive? I think she is not, in my opinion.

Does she have a good color scheme?

Post your opinions of her! :derp:

She's my third favorite background pony and I think she's kind of cute, but that's about it.

I'm not obsessed with her or anything, but she's okay.

I USED to be a Derpy hater for various reasons. I hated the voice, I hated the wall-eyed design and I hated the colour scheme.

But now... She's my favourite pony out of them all by far! She's actually got a really complementing colour scheme that I love and the Blonde hair is just perfect for her because she's a little bit bubbly and ditzy or to put it bluntly... She acts 'blonde.'

She has a similar, if not the same, eye condition that I have although mine is slightly less noticeable and I can now find myself relating to her as I'm quite clumsy myself.

Also, my favourite food is Blueberry Muffin's :3 So yeah!

I <3 Derpy

Edit: If you find her offensive, you're a moron. Love from Kaz.

Derpy is best background pony.

She is the definition of adorable. If you check the dictionary, we should petition Oxford's dictionary to add a picture of Derpy. Her twisted eyes, her cute speech, and her clumsy nature, multiply her cute and adorable characteristics.

Derpy is best background pony.

This ends my Derpy exposition.

Do you really need my opinion? Srsly guise? Srsly? I think she's cute. I mean she's not perfect, but she does try her hardest. I think the whole controversy over her was blown out of proportion, but its done and over with. My favorite scene with her, Luna Eclipsed of course! I mean seriously. She was just trying to have fun, and accidentally drained to apple trough.

I like her colors as they are simple and appealing. Her unique personality based on fan reaction and assumption is a quite fitting one and was cool to see her clumsiness adopted into the show.

She was offensively portrayed in her most important role however this could be easily been made up for with her good traits. If given the chance to show her good side she wouldn't then appear so offensive. In reality she is only as offensive as any other of the characters and the mane 6 since I'm sure they've acted offensively or shallowly at some point.

She wouldn't be my favourite background pony but I still like her. I like her colour design and she has her funny moments as well, I also don't find her to be offensive.

To me, she's okay. I like her unique traits (derpy eyes, derpy voice, etc.) which makes stand out a bit compared to the rest. Her color scheme's a bit... bleak, though. mlp-pchappy.png

I adore Derpy. Not only she is best background pony. She's best pony, period.

  1. She's naturally cute and funny. Whenever she appears, one can't help but look at her. She can sit, smile, wallow, roll, or be in some kind of other innocent role, and it makes you either go "awwwwww" or chuckle with her from her silliness.
  2. Her color scheme is actually perfect. One of her quirks is how aloof, innocent, bubbly, and ditzy she can be, so her blonde mane fits her characterization. The same goes for her cool gray fur. Compared to the others (minus Luna, Snowflake, and Thunderlane), she's one of the few to regularly appear with a non-pastel fur color, making her stand out.
  3. As a personality, both her fanon and canon are absolutely adorable. Her canon portrayal is innocent, bubbly, and cute, yet willing to help. Those four fit Derpy to a tee in the original version of "The Last Roundup." Her portrayal seen in her smaller roles are expanded upon in the fanon via comics, fanart, fanfic, and music. (Some fanon elements like her love for muffins and occupation as a mailmare — only in the official comics — have become canon.) The bronies, then, expanded her canon portrayal and executed some adorable, amazing, well-done fanon executions of interesting concepts, my most favorite being the fanon Derpy/Dinky mother/daughter relationship.

One of my all-time favorite pieces of that fanon is this Christmas video:
  4. Most importantly, she is the symbol of the brony fandom in the show. Back when the fandom first began, eagle-eyed viewers spotted a cross-eyed pony, dubbing her as Derpy. As the fandom spilled more onto the Internet, she as a character became widely popular and intrigued the people behind the scenes, especially Faust. Prior to Feeling Pinkie Keen's airing, Derpy replaced "Ditzy Doo" in the cast, and she's been around occasionally in the show as an Easter Egg bonus to remind bronies that DHX understands how much everyone, including the older audience, means to them.
  5. Out of all of the background characters, she's the one with easily the most potential; I'm a big brony of her, too, for the fact that she can be one of the most memorable canon characters of all-time. She has an interesting, unique concept and can really fit into the morale of the series. So far, the brony fandom is filling that role nicely via fanart and fanfic. Unfortunately, her unnecessary censorship (from her portrayal that is, BTW, not offensive) resulted in confining her to the background only. If given the go ahead, she could become even more iconic and more memorable.

I didn't even know that "derpy" is apparently an offensive slang word for developmentally disabled until that controversy started. Oh wait, that's because IT'S NOT! Those soccer moms made that up. The first instance of the word "derp" occurred on an episode of South Park when Chef quit his job at the school cafeteria and was replaced by a new chef named Mr. Derp. Mr. Derp was obnoxious in that he tried too hard to be kooky and crazy to entertain the kids. He would pull some stupid antic like hit himself over the head with a spoon and fall down, then he would say "Derp!" The kids hated him. After that, people started to use the words "derp" and "derpy" to describe buffoonish behaviour. That is why Derpy is called Derpy. I really dislike the fact that they officially changed Derpy's name in the canon.

Wow, I never knew how Derpy got her name like that :o.

Ya, I think Ditzy Doo is a better name then Derpy, even though I call her Derpy.

Derpy is tied with Luna for best pony with me. Even without her crazy eyes, I find her absolutely adorable. I also really like her design, it's nice and simplistic.

I don't find her offensive in the slightest. I mean yeah, she's clumsy and has a blond mane, but then again, I also fit that description... but um... hair though. The stink caused by her role with Rainbow Dash though was completely stupid and unfounded. (I do like her second voice a bit more though, but that might be because I didn't watch the premier of that episode.)

I wouldn't say she is my number one favorite pony or favorite background pony, but she is certainly has a lot of charm to her, and she is definitely among the ranks of my favorite background pony; probably around second or third favorite background pony. I love her design, and I adore her clumsyness. She is clumsy, yes, but she seems like such a kind soul, and so sweet, and doesn't let her clumsyness bother her. You could say I'm rather fond of her. Oh, and she's simply adorable.

To be totally honest I don't have much of an opinion on Derpy, she's an okay background character and her quirks and screw-ups are admittedly pretty funny, but she is not one of the background characters that I would like to see expanded upon and given a real role in the series like Lyra, Octavia, or Vinyl.

Meh.

...I wish I could just leave it at that, but the post must go on, for obvious reasons.

To be honest, I really have no opinion about any background pony one way or the other. I'm really not even sure why so many people are interested in them at all, aside from using these space fillers (often with zero lines in the show) as templates around which to construct canon-but-not-canon characters with personalities and behaviors of their choosing. It's pretty neat - I'm not saying it isn't - but I still don't see that as a reason to outright venerate characters that were never meant to do anything more than 'look nice' in the first place, especially when you've got plenty of characters that were actually written with personality in canonical context.

I dunno, I just can't take anyone seriously who honestly proclaims DERPY IS BEST PONY when even Flutters, the weakest of the Mane 6 IMO, is still a more interesting character. I'm sorry if that sounds snobbish, but that's my honest opinion on Derpy (and by extension, all other BG pones). Haters gonna hate, though. :comeatus:

I love Derpy.. How can you not love Derpy, she's adorable!

Although, I do prefer Derpy when she isn't talking.. I like her role as an Easter Egg for Bronies to find, more than as an actual character.

Maybe because it feels like the writers are pandering TOO much when they give her a speaking role.

Have a nice cold pint, and wait for all this to blow over..

I'm not obsessed with her, but I do think she's cute and funny.  I especially love her cutie mark.  Bubbles are awesome!  I'd like if she had a bigger part in at least one episode.

I have said it many times and I will say it again, Derpy is best background pony. Though it was never confirmed one way or another if she was disabled, I love Derpy because I like the positive message a character like her sends, that it is okay to be different. As someone who grew up with Autism I know what it is like to be misunderstood and stereotyped so a character like Derpy is very relatable to me. And Derpy is so unbelievably adorable.

Another South Park connection I forgot to mention in my first post was the episode where they used the word derp a whole bunch of times to make fun of Rob Schnider movies. I could explain it but it's easier to just link the video.

So that and Mr. Derp were the first places I ever saw the word used. I looked it up and a couple of websites say South Park is where "derp" originated, but you can never be sure with pop culture history.
