The game is amazingly fun and scary.

There is never a dull moment in this game

Ambiance is spot on and sets the tone

There is stealth like requirement in this game

Beware lots and lots of blood and carnage

If you love scary games this one is a must buy

8/10

It's on my list of scary games to play. (Amnesia, Containment Breach, Outlast)

My vote for scariest game of all time though would be Fatal Frame. Scared me more than anything else I've ever seen. After that I was de-sensitized to scary movies and games, couldn't get scared and haven't had that same "looking over your shoulder" feeling since.  -_- . Hopefully one of those games'll bring it back,  :)

Ah, this! I've heard a little bit about this game from a couple of buddies. I rarely actually download indie horror games to play for myself, but the playthroughs on Youtube from people like Markiplier are always entertaining. Might have to actually download Outlast in this circumstance... it still probably won't be as scary as Amnesia.

It could be a very scary game, but it could be on the list of one of the most scariest games of all time. Maybe, it is a very scary game.

I wonder whether this guy thinks it's a scary game. ;)

Okay it is a scary game. I got a bit confused while I was mentioning scary games, so it is definitely a very scary game to a lot of people who played it. :P

I've been meaning to ask you something; it seems like every time a new thread is made, there is always a noticeably quick and brief reply from you in it. Is it a goal of yours to have a response to every single thread or something? Or are you just eager to get to the Pegasus badge? :P

Anyway, @thread, I'ma start downloading this. If it's not another fumble-in-the-darkness type of game, it should be refreshing. Shame the whole indie horror game genre has fallen into a formula like that... but I'll keep my hopes up for surprises, just like Pinkie would :3

Download if you must but, be warned! You may go insane, but anyway I don't have a goal of responding to every single thread..yet. Me being eager? :P Oh Flip, your such a kidder.

Because Penumbra rebooted the horror genre after Resident Evil abandoned it. Then gave it a nice new, simpler flavor free of the major issues of needing AI, by scripting most of the content.

So now everyones trying that.

Another good, freaky game, with a lot of scares and mystery but little or no darkness however is Cryostasis. If your up for it :)

Even better when you have an Nvidia card, as it REALLY uses the hell outta PhysX. Melting ice, water.. all sorts. pretty nice stuff.

Its an FPS Survival Horror title with a great story and an interesting way to tell it.

Now this one really sparked my interest, since I've been without a decent horror game for a while, and I'm still waiting for the Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Hopefully it won't be a flop.

Seems like all indie horrors are doing now the same thing, stripping the player down to nothing, and let them wander around dark places with barely enough light, and have em being chased by bloodthirsty creatures.

Not that's a bad thing, I'm sure! ^^

So tempting to watch a playthrough on youtube but don't wanna spoil for when I play it. Looks pretty good though from what little I have seen. Really hoping it lives up to the hype though and hope all this praise isn't gearing it for failure of not being anywhere near as good as its made out to be.

I'm currently playing Outlast and the scariest thing was the ambient horror in the beginning of the game, I think I'm currently a little over halfway in the game. Up until this point I find Amnesia still to be the better one in terms of ambient horror and constant restlessness. Though Outlast is far more disturbing in content, which I'm not really effected by. Mind you, I'm not playing with some tutorial, alongside a Let's Play or with a walkthrough. That way I don't know what's coming and will get the full effect. Plus, I'm further into the game than most people are. Despite my attempts to make this the scariest experience (playing in the dark, not on skype, at night, headphones, etc.) I don't really find this a very scary game.

Sure there are plenty of jump scares, but if that's the only thing the game has then I'm not going to be impressed. Though the constant pressure and danger are there, it isn't as apparent as it was in many other horror games. The characters, especially the insane ones, are well-made and they certainly do add to the experience. The story is pretty fresh 'n swell too. But scary? Not really..

However, I guess this might seem as a really scary game for ones that are only familiar with horror games such as Amnesia, Slender and The Evil Within but not familiar with games such as Dreadout, Daylight, System Shock and Alone in the Dark.

I'm hoping the horror games don't go down the path of no weapons, only a flashlight, jump scares, decent ambiance and bloodthirsty monsters. If a dev needs these elements just to make their game scary, I'm going to be very displeased with the future of horror games.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just finished the game. It took me around just a little less than 4 hours. The ending was meh. The game didn't live up to the hype honestly. I bet I could've completed the game in 2 hours if I didn't get mindlessly stuck at some places. It would've been cool if you could rewatch your camera footage, but alas, it didn't happen.

Sadly, I won't even play it till Christmas since that's when I'm getting a computer made for gaming...but from what I've seen, my reaction to the game is:

Eh...

I watched both Cry and TheRadBrad play some of it...and it doesn't look scary in the slightest. Of course, it's not scary until you actually play it. It looks like an extremely fun game to play solo or with a friend nearby, though.

I definitely wouldn't call it the scariest game of all time, because that title doesn't even exist correctly. The scariest game franchise I have ever played was Condemned...but that's not saying much.

I feel the same, just by watching the gameplay.  This could of course be because of the environment we're in while watching the video, listening to someone else experience it as opposed to experiencing it yourself, and that takes a lot from a game.  I remember watching Amnesia gameplay forever ago, and finding it sub-par... and then I played it... yeah, I really did nearly piss myself.

So after I finish A Machine for Pigs I'll probably give Outlast a go!  If nothing else the game has some stellar graphics!

I love the way this game looks, and I've wanted to play it since I saw the reveal. I just thought it was soooo awesome!

Been trying to get my horror fix lately. Unfortunately, my body is ready... My PC isn't... *sigh*

Anyway, my friend was playing this, said he can't be scared or stop laughing when he's hiding under a table and a dudes dong is in his face wobbling around. :l

Unfortunately, it is. They've basically taken everything that was unique from The Dark Descent and threw it away. The only thing I enjoyed in AMfP are the ambient sounds and voices, but not much more than that. Everything that made this game so special, along with the atmosphere, was simply ditched. The Dark Descent is superior to AMfP. Or rather, AMfP became inferior to TDD.

As for Outlast, it's brilliant I'd say. A correct mixture of jumpscares with extremely well fit atmosphere. Plus, the lightning effects outside connected with the camera are simply brilliant. When you only see silhouettes of things when lightning strikes... Probably my favorite part of game. Jumpscares, Atmosphere, Story, Insanity... I'd say everything is fine and at correct levels without overdoing it. Perhaps it would be nicer though if monsters were a bit less scripted, but other than that, it's nicely done.

I've played and finished it myself, and Im also currently playing Amnesia:Machine for Pigs...

Personally, I think Machine for Pigs is scarier by far, although Outlast did have me jumping alot.

The makers of Outlast have future sequels planned since the game was picked up by Sony for the PS3 and 4, so Im sure it will have its chance to scare alot more people and to refine itself.

In itself though, it was a great game indeed, scared the crap outta me in alot of places xD

The game has definitely caused me to jump at times and I find those really long chases to be quite the breath taker.

Here's the thing about this game. I think it depends how you play it. I've been watching PewDiePie play the game. He purposely takes a risk sometimes and comes out of hiding places or holes even if the monster is just in front of him. That really scares me! When it turns and he just barely makes it back into hiding or crawling through that hole, with the monster practically on his heels? That's scary! Now take someone who doesn't do that and likes to be cautious, and it's not all that scary.

Get what I mean? Anyway, it's a great game. It could pass for scariest, but I'm not sure.

It indeed looks scary and though I admit I haven't seen much more than a couple of Pewdiepie lets play's on it it doesn't really seem to have any real depth to it. What separates a good horror game from a bad one is it's ability to draw you into it's story. Games like SCP and Slender are great for jump scares but you can't compare them to something like Amnesia (yes I'm going to use THIS as my example).

Besides, a LOT of Youtube gamers who play horror titles will yell and scream painfully more than they need to in an attempt to draw in subs.

Yeah, I've given both Outlast and Machine for Pigs a try, and I gotta say Outlast is proving to be a much more fulfilling horror game experience. The AI's a touch predictable at times (Hide in one locker, and they'll always check the other (except for that one time Big'n checked BOTH lockers. That scream when he opened the door was not mine, I refuse to accept it.)) but when the game pins you down and forces you to run like hell is when I feel it really shines.

Outlast is scary but on a bit more of a jumpscare level, though the music does add some decent build up.

One in particular that can beat Outlast in scariness is the demo game called P.T. It's a demo to the new game coming out by Hideo Kojima called Silent Hills. Those who saw my topic on this all ready know about it.

This game is consistently terrifying.  I'm not a gamer, but I do watch reaction vids.  I've seen the full Pewdiepie playthrough twice, and both times I was scared out of my mind.  I hope to god I never have the chance to actually play this game myself.  I'd probably have a heart attack and die.
