Hurricane Haiyan descends on the Philippines

I'm surprised I don't see an active thread on this monster storm. I tried the search feature, but it's down at the moment. Haiyan might be the most powerful hurricane/typhoon ever recorded. The reported sustained and top wind speeds are unbelievable! It doesn't matter where this thing touches down, anything man-made that's standing in its path will be devastated.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everybody impacted by this event. Does anyone here live in or close to Haiyan's path?

I live in the Philippines and have relatives that are native in the Central islands of the Visayas region. The intensity of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) was one of the worst they had ever encountered. My aunt in Capiz told us that nearly every building in the provincial capital was severely damaged especially farther inland wherein anything that wasn't cemented to the ground literally flew off it's foundations. My fellow countrymen in the region are becoming ever more desperate. Looting anything just to survive another day without relief goods arriving is the only thing that's keeping them alive right now.

Here's an excerpt from a resident there:

On the outskirts of Tacloban, a coastal eastern city of 220,000 where tsunami-like waves destroyed many buildings, Edward Gualberto accidentally stepped on bodies as he raided the wreckage of a home. Wearing nothing but a pair of red basketball trousers, the father-of-four and village councilor apologized for his shabby appearance and for stealing from the dead.

Empty coffins lie on a street near houses damaged after super Typhoon Haiyan battered Tacloban city.

“I am a decent person. But if you have not eaten in three days, you do shameful things to survive,” Gualberto told AFP as he dug canned goods from the debris and flies swarmed over the bodies.

“We have no food, we need water and other things to survive.”

“This typhoon has stripped us of our dignity… but I still have my family and I am thankful for that.”

I am but one of many that is spreading the word on how grim it is here in my country right now and I hope we receive the help that my fellow countrymen desperately need.

My family is back in the Philippines and I'm proud of my province. I'm from Cebu and before the hurricane their was a massive Earthquake and then the hurricane that ripped through after and by george we toughed it out.

I'm just glad my family is fine, actually they're more than fine, they're just complaining that their isn't any power (I know my brother and sister feel powerless with the internet muwhahaha!!) xDD

Edit: I'm just scared of the things I might see when I go back. Many of the buildings and landmarks I've gotten to know was destroyed and plus on TV one of the malls I use to go to was flooded with people trying to survive. It sends shivers down your spine when something like that is happening so close to home

I've been watching news coverage and it's very heartbreaking to see.  :(  I feel so useless.  All I can do is pray and donate a few measly bucks to aid agencies.  I'm in a nice warm house with food, potable water, and I'm mainly preoccupied with trivial things.  And shortly after I post this, I'm going to sleep comfortably in a nice bed while thousands of people can't.  :/

This continues to be in the back of my mind.

It was really devastating... I never experienced it, but when I saw the news reports... I live in Albay, Bicol. The typhoon seemed weaker than I thought whet it came to my town, but I learned that Albay was just on  the typhoon's "tail". To all the Visayan people reding this, who were affected by the typhoon, I'm sorry for your losses and good luck. You can rise again, think positive about the future.
