Why do some new members do this?

Another great point as well! People get involved with another outlet or a discord server before they can give this place a chance!

Some of them come just to do certain things like post a certain topic, and once that is done they leave. Aside from those who do that though, I have no idea why some members post a few things then leave, I suppose they just have different reasons.

Some people may decide this place isn't for them. Or they'll get busy and forget they even made an account on here.

Sometimes I welcome new users and I never hear back from or see them again. 

It almost feels like I'm wasting my time trying because I never used to welcome new users.

Yeah it's unfortunate we seem to get so many new people join and then just go away soon after. It would really help pick the activity up around here if they stayed.
