melody5697 195 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 (edited) I haven't worked everything out yet, but here's my theory: Equestria is definitely on Earth. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's in North America because they have saguaro cacti which only grow in the Sonoran desert. It's even in the right part of the continent. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic takes place in an alternate universe, the same one that the G1 show takes place in, but in the future. WAY in the future. But why do they still speak English? Long, long ago, there was a threat to the entire world. The Rainbow of Light, the flutter ponies, and the princesses' magic wands all put together weren't enough to stop it. The only thing with enough magic to stop the threat was the Heart of Ponyland, which controlled all the magic in the entire world. The six princess ponies' magic wands, which they used to maintain the magical balance in Ponyland, drew their power from it, but the wands couldn't hold enough magic for them to be used to stop the threat. The princess ponies had to transfer the magic to themselves. The princesses were originally one unicorn, one pegasus, and three earth ponies, but when they transfered the magic into themselves, they became the first alicorns. They used their new magic to stop the threat. (Something happened to the humans, but I haven't figured out what.) But then they realized that the sun wasn't moving. It turned out they had removed too much magic from the Heart of Ponyland. Without it, the sun and moon couldn't move on their own, the weather wouldn't change, the plants wouldn't grow, the animals couldn't take care of themselves, and ponies were born without their cutie marks. On the plus side, languages stopped changing. But the ponies had to figure out how to make the world work again. They were focusing on that and lost all their technology. Eventually they got to where they are now and they still speak English, but very few remember what happened. Nopony knows that the Tree of Harmony used to be the Heart of Ponyland, and that the Everfree Forest works the way it does because the Tree of Harmony has just enough magic for the area around it to work like it's supposed to. I hope nobody minds that I ended up explaining a bunch of other stuff in the process of explaining why they still speak English. (I hope nothing I said contradicted the G1 show. I haven't actually seen the whole thing.) Edited July 18, 2015 by melody5697

Lisa 5,553 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 Because it's a fictional TV show created (mainly) for English speakers. It wouldn't be a very good show if they all did "neighs" would it?
Grtxkkyz 388 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 (edited) On the fantasy aspect, I have two theories: either Equestrian sounds totally exactly like English, or it is translated for the sake of the audience and the ponies speak in their own tongue. Some fanfics deal with this. I like to believe Equestrian English is like the Basic language of Star Wars lore. On a meta level, yeah, the ponies speak english because it's (obviously) the main tongue of its actresses and actors as well as its original language. Sky Knight 1,172 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 There might be an England either in or outside of Equestria. Remeber that in Suited For Success, Fluttershy was complaining that her dress was not "true French horte corture", which means that there has to be a France, or at least French influences in society. Treelestia 36 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 Ponies also use tools, architecture, and many other things that make sense for humans, but would be very different if we assume that pony culture developed independent of human preconceptions. Examples: doorknobs. Quill pens. Chairs and sofas have backrests that no pony uses. Spoons and other utinsels and tools have handles not designed for non-unicorns. Etc etc.

Guest July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 There comes a point where fans of a show look too far into it, this is one of those times. If it wasn't in English it wouldn't be really "watchable" to a lot of the audience. Some stuff you just have to assume is there for the sake of it being a cartoon meant for entertainment. Finia 260 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 (edited) They probably don't. I saw "My Little Pony Tales" and it had some weird symbols or something as a written language on a note they wrote on. They speak in english because its for all ages. And understanding characters and adding to that experience makes it more fun ^^. Edit: And making up a new language seems like trying to hard i think. I am happy that they are adorable ponies who lives in their own world. Edited July 18, 2015 by Finia
Cleverclover 1,526 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 I really don't understand why people assume that the ponies actually speak in neighs and whinnys and that the show is translated. There is so little evidence to support this that it makes absolutely no sense. First off, knowing that there are other races besides just ponies in Equestria, how exactly can they communicate with each other without any issue whatsoever? Take Spike, for example. You'd have to imagine that neighs and whinnys are certainly not natural sounds for him to make, yet apparently no one has any trouble understanding him. And what about the donkeys? The buffalo? The griffons? Every other non-pony race in Equestria that ponies do not have any trouble communicating with? There is clearly no language barrier to be found. Secondly, consider the episode Dragon Quest. Surely, you'd have to assume that dragons must have their own language, and thus they wouldn't understand the pony tongue. So even if we assume that Spike somehow learned how to sufficiently speak the pony language, the fact is that it's still the only language he knows. Never would he have been given any opportunity to learn his native tongue, and considering how little ponies know about dragons, it's incredibly unlikely that someone actually managed to decipher their language. Yet still, Spike has no trouble whatsoever understanding the teenage dragons, and likewise they have no trouble understanding him. Thirdly, consider the Equestria Girls films (and I really hate to use these as an example). The humans in that world are obviously not speaking in pony tongue. Yet same as before, Twilight has no trouble understanding them, and vice versa. And you certainly cannot tell me that she learned the human language from any book in Equestria. The show isn't translated. Yes, ponies speak English out of simple convenience for the audience, but it still remains the primary language of Equestria. And there's the tiniest little thing from Swarm of the Century that confirms this forever: WELCOME PRINCESS CELEST Pure, clear-as-day, English text right from the show. Case closed. :grin2:

Prince Firemane 309 July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 I don't know why, but the ponies' mouth movements prove that they are legitimately speaking English, it's not some kind of extradimensional translation.

cider float 2,538 July 21, 2015 Share July 21, 2015 (edited) Heck the dragons not only can speak with Spike who was raised by ponies all his life but can also read pony language since the red dragon read Celestia's letter to Twilight. Here's a theory all the creatures in Equestria were united together and learned to speak the same language. Something separated them all though.
