Why do ponies speak English?

Good question, here's a better one. Why do YOU speak English?

I've actually been thinking... What if the ponies' written language (their alphabet) and word/sentence structure is different but their vocalizations sound just like English and connect just like English?

Say what now? I have no idea what you just said.

AHEM They don't actually speak *English*, they speak Canadian. They are all voiced by Canadians so it makes sense! Print it!!!

Jokes aside, it could just be the dominant language for Equestria. This makes for some good potential, they could go to a totally different land where ponies have a different first language, that could be interesting.

Hello?

Time Lord with a device that lets you understand alien languages?

You're welcome

Otherwise you'd hear nothing but snorts, whinnies, neighs and lots of clip-clops

There's almost always a pony with an hourglass cutie mark in the background of whatever town the ponies are in to help spread the translation field

They speak English because the creators of the show speak English.

I guess you could have one of them say something about speaking, "Pony-eese", but what would be the point?

Because MLP is owned by Hasbro which from USA which is a country that speaks mostly English?

Unless perhaps you prefer explanation like at one point in history in MLPFIM, an overwhelmingly country with English as its official language committed some sort of cultural cleansing movement which left only English as the sole language of entire world of MLPFIM.

They speak english for the same reason they speak english in Star Wars. Or would you have liked it better if people in Star Wars habitually spoke in Aurebesh?

Alternatively, this guy does an amazing job at not only proving that ponies are in fact speaking in English, but also offers some decent explanations for some other language related oddities throughout the show.  For example, why do ponies write in scribbles.  The part where he proves English canon starts at 14 minutes and 33 seconds.

There might be an England either in or outside of Equestria. Remeber that in Suited For Success, Fluttershy was complaining that her dress was not "true French horte corture", which means that there has to be a France, or at least French influences in society.

Excellent :3 I knew there were other nations outside Equestria and beyond xD

Maybe the real language of Equestria (which in it's written form can be seen in books and on papers in the show) is translated to English to be understandable to the audience, the same way, for example, Westron is translated into English in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or alien languages in Babylon 5.

But it's entirely possible that it's really supposed to be English, which is the case in the Star Wars universe also, where Galactic Basic Standard is supposed to sound exactly like modern English by coincidence.
