cider float 2,538 July 21, 2015 Share July 21, 2015 My Little Pony I could understand that but if Star Trek also does the same thing that would make translators feel useless.

RavenholmZombie 1,330 July 21, 2015 Share July 21, 2015 Good question, here's a better one. Why do YOU speak English? #2edgy4me I've actually been thinking... What if the ponies' written language (their alphabet) and word/sentence structure is different but their vocalizations sound just like English and connect just like English? Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,720 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 AHEM They don't actually speak *English*, they speak Canadian. They are all voiced by Canadians so it makes sense! Print it!!! Jokes aside, it could just be the dominant language for Equestria. This makes for some good potential, they could go to a totally different land where ponies have a different first language, that could be interesting.
The Nth Doctor 663 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 Hello? Time Lord with a device that lets you understand alien languages? You're welcome Otherwise you'd hear nothing but snorts, whinnies, neighs and lots of clip-clops There's almost always a pony with an hourglass cutie mark in the background of whatever town the ponies are in to help spread the translation field 1 "I love deadlines. Banul 3,831 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 They speak English because the creators of the show speak English. I guess you could have one of them say something about speaking, "Pony-eese", but what would be the point?
Luna the Great of all the Russias 2,994 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 Because MLP is owned by Hasbro which from USA which is a country that speaks mostly English? Unless perhaps you prefer explanation like at one point in history in MLPFIM, an overwhelmingly country with English as its official language committed some sort of cultural cleansing movement which left only English as the sole language of entire world of MLPFIM. Phosphorous 136 July 23, 2015 Share July 23, 2015 Do you guys recall the Babel fish from the hitchikers guide. Maybe, the show is recorded as if all of the viewers have babel fish.

Galen 1,354 July 23, 2015 Share July 23, 2015 (edited) They speak english for the same reason they speak english in Star Wars. Or would you have liked it better if people in Star Wars habitually spoke in Aurebesh? Edited July 23, 2015 by Galen
cider float 2,538 July 25, 2015 Share July 25, 2015 Because kids usually don't like to read subtitles and most people would not want to be bothered to learn a fictional language to watch the show.
Malinter 3,064 July 25, 2015 Share July 25, 2015 MLP uses a univeral translator like the TARDIS My OC's: Malinter, Rahl, Vengeful impact & alias-the-marked-one First fic i've written since forever here Skype: Malinter@Outlook.com "Defeating a sandwich only makes it tastier." most legendary quote ever. Soaring Symphony 372 August 30, 2015 Share August 30, 2015 (edited) I think I know why. Maybe the ponies really do speak some kind of bizarre horse language but, because Doctor Whooves is living in Ponyville, the TARDIS translates everything for us. Soaring Symphony 372 December 1, 2015 Share December 1, 2015 (edited) Alternatively, this guy does an amazing job at not only proving that ponies are in fact speaking in English, but also offers some decent explanations for some other language related oddities throughout the show. For example, why do ponies write in scribbles. The part where he proves English canon starts at 14 minutes and 33 seconds. Karma Lightwing 245 December 1, 2015 Share December 1, 2015 They are actually speaking equestrian but since Doctor Whooves is always near the Tardis translates it for you us ;O Silly muffins, of course i have to eat you.
Flying_Endeavor 73 December 1, 2015 Share December 1, 2015 (edited) There might be an England either in or outside of Equestria. Remeber that in Suited For Success, Fluttershy was complaining that her dress was not "true French horte corture", which means that there has to be a France, or at least French influences in society. Excellent :3 I knew there were other nations outside Equestria and beyond xD Edited December 1, 2015 by Flying_Endeavor
GuerrierCosmique 146 December 1, 2015 Share December 1, 2015 Maybe the real language of Equestria (which in it's written form can be seen in books and on papers in the show) is translated to English to be understandable to the audience, the same way, for example, Westron is translated into English in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or alien languages in Babylon 5. But it's entirely possible that it's really supposed to be English, which is the case in the Star Wars universe also, where Galactic Basic Standard is supposed to sound exactly like modern English by coincidence. Alex, Alex! You're walking away from history! History! Did Chris Columbus say he wanted to stay home? No! What if the Wright Brothers thought that only birds should fly? And did Galoka think that the Yulus were too ugly to save? -- Centauri to Alex Rogan; "The Last Starfighter" (1984)
