Guest90210 3,568 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 (edited) Alright, first off, this isn't our show. Even though it was written with amazing characters great storylines, and all that good shit that makes it appeal to us, it was still made to be a 22 and a half minute commercial to sell toys. Nothing more. Well that's not really true. Lauren Faust, the creator of MLP FIM has stated many times that FIM was created in an attempt to combat stereotypes and to not make it feel like a 22 minute toy commercial. This is one of the reasons the show has gotten as popular as it has. After Faust left at the end of Season 2 the show seemed to largely shift to focus on toys more (Equestria Girls, Alicorn Twilight, etc.). As Ragland Tiger pointed out, the direction the show is heading is kind of alarming. Are they going to ignore her new kingdom like they do Twilight's wings? How is this going to effect the story? Guest90210 3,568 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 (edited) Hasbro hired Faust, who took it and made it what it is. MLP was and is, for all intensive purposes, a commercial to sell toys. The writing and characters Faust made are what made it more than that. But as I said the focus has significantly shifted to toys much more than originally. Faust's vision for the show wasn't for it to feel like a long toy commercial and, again as I said this one of the reasons the show is as popular as it is. She wanted the parents to be able to watch it and enjoy it and that's why the show was made the way it was. Parents don't want to watch toy commercials. When I first started watching that was one the elements that kept me interested. I didn't feel like I was watching a toy commercial, but stuff like EqG and Alicorn Twilight are blatant toyetic creations which make the show less enjoyable (especially when Alicorn Twilight, which was supposed to be a major character development, is largely ignored by the writers). Although each side has its own way of telling the story, I like them both equally. Its not so much the content within them, but the enjoyment we get from them that matters in the long run Edited February 14, 2014 by Argumedies
TurtlesForSale 128 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 I naturally have a hate of change, if a room is changed around then I will freak out so this does worry me but even though the name, the rainbow flipping kingdom, sounds stupid they might make a pretty good job at it or they could screw everything up completely. I think they could have come up with a more certificated name but you've gotta remember it is a kids show. (Spoilders from here so ...you have been warned) This whole new powers thing ...same as the kingdom it could be terrible or great. Ragland Tiger 3,391 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 Alright, first off, this isn't our show. Even though it was written with amazing characters great storylines, and all that good shit that makes it appeal to us, it was still made to be a 22 and a half minute commercial to sell toys. Nothing more. This is still a show made to appeal to little girls in hopes to sell toys to them. It gives us nods, and it occassionally caters to us, but all in all, this show is being written for the original audience, like it has always been, and always will be; and if you want them to start writing the show for Bronies, then I think you're just in it so you can be part of the internet trend and not for the show itself. I may have discovered MLP through it being an internet sensation, but believe me when I say I couldn't care less about how popular it is, because I'm in it because I find the show extremely enjoyable, not just so I can be part of the fandom. Just for the sake of argument, sometimes I think even children deserve better. By that I mean something that appeals to those easily dismissed intangibles such as literacy, dignity, and intelligence; things that should apply to children as much as anyone. Lauren Faust and the crew arguably have come as close as anyone to making a show that truly values those things. So, when I come across " big announcements" like this, my heart sinks a little. I have posted this quotation before, and admittedly, it's out of context, but it articulates why I find the pushing aside of these values problematic. ...every season Hasbro makes demands. They need a new pink princess pony and for Twilight Sparkle to have a brother. The board wants to see crystal ponies because the buzzword “crystal” anything is popular with girls 4-8 years of age. And now, they want Twilight Sparkle to be a princess, because Hasbro is not like us. Hasbro is not like Lauren Faust and her message of empowerment for girls AND boys. Hasbro is not like M.A. Larson who writes amazing episodes filled with silly mayhem and unique approaches to the tropes of children’s programming. Hasbro is not like actual little girls or grown up adults who love the show for all its smart jokes and fun characters. Unlike all of us, Hasbro is convinced that being smart and capable and open to learning and new experiences- the myriad of character traits for which we love a certain purple unicorn, are unimportant. Their priority is rushing the character into being a princess because retailers don’t want books as accessories with girls toys, they want dresses and flowing hair and weddings and yards of pink material. http://pixelkitties.tumblr.com/post/41891667888/controversy-is-once-again-brewing-among-fans-of In my opinion, it should be something more than that.
Celli 4,338 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 I can imagine most of the fandom reacting with negative reactions, and thinking that the show is going to go down the tubes from these decisions by Hasbro. Honestly, I'm not going to lie and say that these changes won't leave any raised eyebrows. Although, I'm not mad about this. All we know is the premise, don't judge it if you didn't see what is going to happen yet. This. I won't judge til I've seen anything. I wish people wouldn't jump to conclusions.

Guest90210 3,568 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 In my opinion, it should be something more than that. It can't be said much better than that. Hasbro pushes things for the sake of making toys and is straying off the path the show was original heading towards. Don't get me wrong, some of the new episodes are awesome! But some things are definitely concerning.
BrilliantVenture 334 February 14, 2014 Share February 14, 2014 no....not gonna believe it. Until it happens...no. no. no. no. no. no. no. no. I don't think this will be canon...no. no. It can't be. There'd be no reason to change the environment of everyone and everything that makes the show so interesting and make all the characters rainbow, which would seperate them from having unique differences but still being friends. no. No...NO. There's no way. I simply refuse to believe it...

Radiance64 7,053 February 15, 2014 Share February 15, 2014 5 more years of MLP is definitely awesome news. Can't wait to see how things like Twilight getting her own kingdom and other new elements effect the show, and hope they keep it as cool and interesting(and undoubtedly adorable) as it's always been.
Katana 298 February 15, 2014 Share February 15, 2014 0_0 Holy shit, I am glad I gave up my investment in the show and stopped watching new episodes a LONG while back. I really don't want to make the creators feel bad, it's just...the whole concept has lost a lot of the charm that I associated with it. It's basically all down to fan creations now...*sigh*

hawkflame 3,310 February 15, 2014 Share February 15, 2014 This may seem a bit ironic (or maybe completely fitting) considering this is coming from one of the biggest critics of both Twilicorn and Reformed Discord last year, but... Guys you really need to get a grip. I mean, seriously, this is like clockwork. Everyone predicts doom and gloom, the end of the fandom, and yet here we are. The sky hasn't fallen, the world hasn't ended, and the series still more or less is going strong. Do I still stand by my opinion on Twilicorn and Reformed Discord? Absolutely. Have they totally marred an otherwise great season? Not at all. You can have concerns. I had concerns. Hell, I'm not totally sold on this new development myself. But what you shouldn't do is throw a ragequit temper tantrum full of doom and gloom, which unfortunately has become the standard reaction to something like this for some in the fandom. So the way I see it, you have a choice: 1) voice your concerns while taking a chill pill and otherwise letting things play out, or 2) wallow in your knee jerk reaction to something that's out of your hands. I suggest the first one, as all the second one will do is raise your own blood pressure and make you look like a child. Have your concerns, but then take a chill 4 Sig by Thunderstorm Check out my Rarity fansite!

Bucky McGillyCuddy 956 February 15, 2014 Share February 15, 2014 It's Alicorn Twilight all over again. People are going to slam it until the episode airs then do a complete turn-around. Half the time I think this fandom just wants the series to stay in one spot until it dies. Please show me where people are throwing "ragequit temper tantrums". Well it is still early but you might have been around for the Alicorn Twilight Divide? Please show me where people are throwing "ragequit temper tantrums". At least three posts in this thread here are nothing but saying "Oh Hell no!" Hell, look at the first post on this page here. A couple of others are just doom and gloom about how the show's destined to go downhill from this point. There's a difference between the way you seem to be handling things (which is pretty reasonable, I admit) and the way some others are reacting. Guess what- people were saying the same things last year too. I might even have agreed with them. But that's how I know we need to chill out and not get too worked up about something that's out of our control. 1 Sig by Thunderstorm Check out my Rarity fansite! SBaby 660 February 15, 2014 Share February 15, 2014 (edited) I will reserve my judgments until I see it. The reason being, if they're doing what I think they're doing, then fans might be in for a pretty surprising twist. The only reservation I have is calling it the Rainbow Kingdom. However, it does make sense when you think of the fact that they have confirmed toy lines for Rainbow Ponies and Rainbow Powers in production. It's probably connected to that. But every time I see something with 'rainbow' in the name, it just makes me think that Hasbro is somehow favoring Rainbow Dash over the others. However, I felt that way with the name 'Ponyville' when I first heard it, and eventually I got used to it, so I'm sure that I'll eventually get accustomed to this name. Other than that, I'll say this. I did kind of advise a lot of fans that change would likely be a major theme of this season (in fact, I mentioned it several times). It's been four seasons with very little in terms of actual change to the status quo. Ok, Twilight is an Alicorn Princess. So? What has she really done as a princess, except for smile and look pretty in public? Really, nothing aside from a flying lesson. She's still Twilight, and the season so far has practically ignored anything having to do with her potential new responsibilities. All she is up to this point, is what she used to be, but with wings. Getting a new kingdom and being in charge of it, is going to change that. But before you write the rest of the series off, think of this scenario. The mane six are all friends. They've been friends for four years now. Twilight discovers that she is going to be the ruler of an entire new kingdom that is probably on par with Equestria in terms of size (I can't imagine this being a small kingdom). Names aside, she's essentially getting responsibilities that are unfathomable. And based on the new toy line, it's likely that her friends are also going with her and are going to have equally important responsibilities (after all, there's six 'keys to the kingdom' and there's six of them). Now they have new duties that will likely conflict with their personal lives and dreams, developing their characters in ways never before thought possible. There is real potential here, if you think about it. My only worry is that I don't want the show to forget about Equestria, or their friends and family there. But I don't think that will happen. I'm pretty sure the mane six will still be revisiting Ponyville every once in awhile (after all, the CMCs are there, and you really can't write them out of the show, especially since Hasbro wanted them in the show to begin with and two of them are related to mane six members), so I don't think we have to worry about the show focusing on the new kingdom all the time.
