When a character dies

Alpha-neos

Recommended Posts

Usually depending on what story you read, a character that you may have attached with dies.

Be it a villain or a hero...

How did you feel about that?

Why did it need to happen?

Did you see it coming a mile away?

Or was it unexpected?

And maybe even possible: did he or she deserve it?

What do you think?

I feel like it is really sad, and in some cases ticks me off a little bit, but sometimes when a character dies that I like, it adds to the storyline and makes me respect the way the character died.

As much as it sucks, some of the best stories end up with one of the best characters, dying. There's a few characters I've liked enough, I've teared up when they were killed off.

Ahhhhh

Game of Thrones spoiler ahead:

When Ned Stark died in Game of Thrones

I felt so bad, I felt empty. It was just so soon and I guess it didn't even had to happen, well, who knows, maybe it was necessary but I don't think so! I knew it was coming because someone spoiled it to me, but I didn't know it was coming so soon. He didn't deserve it, wish he was still alive since the story would be so different at this point but well, that can't be changed.

If you don't like to fall in love to characters who will die, don't watch Game of Thrones! (But if you want, 4th season is coming on April)

It doesn't really matter since disney making new Star Wars movies will probably destroy the expanded universe, but they had chewbacca die in a really epic way. They dropped a fucking moon on him. During a war against an alien race he literally had the planet breaking a part under him and gave up escaping onto the falcon to instead throw Han Solo's kid on board instead. As they flew away unable to save him the last glimpse of him you get is his arms raised angrily at the moon roaring a challenge at it. When a character grows so much larger than life that it takes a truly epic end to kill him and it is still well performed by the writer, it means a lot. I was never that big of a fan of the wookie but damn that's a heck of a way to go. I had actually really been looking forward to how they might have any of the other main Star Wars characters die, since the expanded universe had gotten fair enough along that they were getting to old to do what they did anymore. But I guess since Disney took over all those stories won't matter anyways.

Well....dang.

A freaking moon?!

They really wanted to make sure he was dead.

That's an epic way to go but kinda sad.

homestuck : If planning to read, do not click.

Basically everyone dies. Like. 20 people. They were all important characters.

20!?

And their main characters!?!?!?

I don't see the point but woah man.... O____o

Let's see. It depends on the importance of the said dead character. But, mostly sad for a moment or two.

That's pretty much all it comes down to.

And most times its not just sad its kinda depressing.

Well depending on the story. >___>

I think I've read too many....

It depends on how invested I am in the series.

For example, the post-series Star Trek novels:

The novels created a much more detailed universe than the shows, mainly because they were not restrained by time, budgets, or special effects. Two of the characters that were introduced in these novels and made appearances in a dozen others were the Federation President Nanietta Bacco and her Chief of Staff, Esperanza Piniero. They were both killed off in recent novels and I was very upset. Additionally, after a catastrophic attack by the Borg on the Alpha Quadrant, several Star Trek characters from on screen, or family members of Star Trek characters on screen, were killed, along with many characters the novels had created and nurtured into wonderful characters. Owen Paris, Charivretha zh'Thane, Elias Vaughn, Sek, and many others. On one hand, it's tough to have beloved characters killed off, on the other, it makes for a more emotionally powerful novel.

But with, say, Harry Potter, I was not as emotionally invested, though I loved the books (and even re-read them), the deaths of the characters in the seventh book don't really have an emotional impact on me, with the exception of

Dobby. I love that little guy in the books. He had what was probably the most emotionally jarring death scene in any of the novels.

In the guardians of the flame novel series, I teared up when Tennetty, and Chak died, I teared up. When Karl Cullinane died, I wanted to throw my book, and stop reading the series.

Honestly if all my favorite characters died in a novel.

I would've burned it. XD

But you know thats just how some stories are.

Actually, it spanned 3, but still.

It depends on the whole situation and everything, but I usually feel kinda ticked off and just overall annoyed, maybe even sad or empty, especially if it's a character that I really like, or has been there since the beginning (or at least a really long time). :(

Usually, it's a very well-written send-off that reminds you of what made that character special, and/or puts a resounding impact on the last thing they did.

I've known some short stories that kind of found the perfect way to make you care the world for a character you JUST met - by giving them the right few lines just before telling you "and then they died tragically".

But what's really cruel? What's really cruel is when a character changes - they twist and morph in ways you didn't anticipate. This is different from character development, and is more to do with emotional damage, or sometimes just a revelation of something they'd been hiding.

Honestly, outside of fiction, I think many family members have gone through something like that when someone they love undergoes severe brain trauma, starts gibbering nonsense, or has to be fed through a tube, etc. Seeing that zombielike incarnation of someone you looked up to has to sit with you as a deep-seated terror. Somehow, it would have just felt so much more direct, "noble" even, for them to die instantly in a car crash.

(And of course, having a fictional character handed off to a horrible writer can do this too!)

A character's death can impact a show greatly. I usually find it more or less sad when a character dies.

For example, I was actually quite sad when one of my favorite characters

Uchiha Itachi

died.

Also, those walking dead deaths. Dang!
