music What are your opinions on Slipknot? (Or metal in general)

Fellow Maggot here ;D people don't give slipknot enough credit, if they actually listen to the lyrics they'll find that while, yes, it's pretty f*cking dark, it's also incredibly intelligently written.

that's pretty much the theme for me with metal, i'll listen to what's intelligent- while i do enjoy the occasional Soulfly, or Pantera, and such, realistically metal is the closest thing we have to classical nowadays, and i love a good intelligently written metal masterpiece. that's probably why i like progressive as much as i do...

it also explains why i was so damn disappointed with Trivium's latest album after Shogun and In Waves :/

Can't say I'm a fan of Slipknot, but I AM a metalhead for sure. My favorite band is a tie between Dream Theater, Pantera, and Judas Priest...but I also listen to a number of other bands.

Just to name a few:

Megadeth
Iced Earth
Hammerfall
Edguy
Anthrax
Queensryche
Metallica
Overkill
Iron Maiden

  • 5 months later...

Always a fan of Slipknot, and still a fan since the age of 11 or 12. Their music helped me through A LOT, and I couldn't wait for their new album to come up in October. 6 years was too long for me, and I'm in absolute joy of what's coming up.

Well metal in general is a good mood changer for me. I love me some Disturbed or Slipknot when I'm upset or feeling down.

You and me both. The new demo song 'The Negative One' is an amazing song. The actual album is going to kick ass especially with a drummer to work in place of Joey. It's great that they are returning to their roots.

I have a friend who's a huge fan of Slipknot. Haven't seen him in forever though. Slipknot isn't my favorite band or anything, but I like them.

I didn't know they had a new album coming out.  :D

Yes, their new album coming out will return to the style of a mixture of their first ever release album and Iowa.

I used to really be into Slipknot, but then somewhere along the way I kinda grew out of them. I still like them, just not like that anymore.

And on the subject of death metal, I prefer deathcore to it usually, but in general its fucking kick ass.

Slipknot were one of the first bands I got into, and I still enjoy listening to them every now and again.

I was gonna say that they weren't Death Metal, but that's already been cleared up.

As far as Death Metal goes, I'm more into Melodeath Metal as opposed to Traditional/Brutal/Technical Death Metal. Norther being one of my favourites in the genre.

I find myself primarily listening to Black Metal, Post-Metal, Industrial Metal, Melodeath Metal, Folk Metal, and Power Metal these days, but I love loads of other sub-genres as well.  :P

That album was fricking AWESOME. I love the (most likely accidental) Industrial elements in some of the songs.

Industrial metal can be a bit finicky. If not done right, it can end up being pretty bad. Though I will admit that Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. isn't a bad album, Iowa was better by far.

Couldn't you say that about anything, though?  ^_^

Deathstars, Psyclon Nine, T3R, Hanzel und Gretyl, and Rammstein are a few great bands that come to mind.

Then again, I'm an Industrial fan in general, and Industrial Metal is just one of it's sub-genres, so I may have a bias there.

Heavy Metal is my favorite genre of music

Slipknot's released a few good songs, but as a whole I think they're pretty average, I prefer bands Like Megadeth, Iron Maiden Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Amon Amarth, and Obituary.

Also, slipknot isn't death metal, they're nu metal :smug: EDIT:Ok, my bad, they USED to be Nu metal

Here, watch this video.

Back when my older brother lived with us, he played Slipknot quite a lot. So i've heard the band before. Although, I can't really give an opinion on them since I don't know what constitutes a good metal song. mlp-tawkward.png

As for metal in general... it's not anywehere near of my favorites genres as of yet, truthfully, but i'm sure if I look deeper, i'll find something that I like! mlp-thappy.png

By the way, is it just me, or are metal fans possibly the nicest people out there? How ironic, if you give in to stereotypes, that is.

Also, slipknot isn't death metal, they're nu metal :smug:

Slipknot have like, one solid Nu Metal album. I dunno why people still shove them into that genre. Most of their other stuff is more Alt Metal sounding, with some borderline Groove Metal tracks in All Hope Is Gone.  Even Vol III, their most diverse and experimental album, doesn't really have any Nu Metal tracks on it.

And judging by their latest release, it doesn't look like they're heading back to the Nu Metal sound they had in their self titled any time soon. Unless you consider anything with fast screaming is Nu Metal, in which case you'd also have to consider bands like Psyclon Nine as Nu Metal, and just no. :I

I like slipknot songs. Good band. I like some other metal bands. But it's mostly rock for me, blink 182, SOAD (who are partly metal), them kinda guys.

I've only listened to a handful of their songs. They were okay. Nothing sticks out in my memory, and they don't seem like they'd hold much appeal for me, though I suppose a few more listens are warranted before I dismiss them completely.

As for metal, it's a genre I'm relatively new to. I only started listening to it last year, and I haven't explored a whole lot of it beyond Opeth (a band I've come to love dearly) and a little bit of Dream Theater. And Demilich, bizarrely enough, considering their obscurity. I really need to get off my bum and expand my musical horizons.

Huge fan of Slipknot and Metal music in general. I have recently gotten into Power Metal, listening to bands such as Hammerfall and Dragon Force. So awesome!

Rammestein are brilliant, doesn't matter if I can't understand half the words :P
