Because it is a set of vaguely defined laws which copyright holders abuse the ever living Tartarus out of. There's probably more to it than that, but that's my tl;dr of the situation. I especially feel sorry for those who have had to deal with Hasbro, SONY and Nintendo on copyright matters.

Nope!

My only experience with G3 as a child was with my sister's Twilight Twinkle doll

I sure do, I watched the movies back then, and I also had a few G3 ponies, in fact I still have them now: Sunny Daze, Strawberry Swirl, Butterscotch, G3 Pinkie Pie, Lucky Clover and Daisy. They're all vintage toys now.
