Bronies or Furries? are they the same?

Whats your oppinion, are bronies and furries the same? I for one think that bronies are a "subspecies" if you will of furry. furries postulate a whole world of talking anthro animals living together.

IE a favorite debate of mine is how would a football helmet or such aparatise be made so it would fit a lions head and a deers head? How would lions and zebras interact socialy?

Well bronies postulate a world where magical talking ponies living together.

You could debate the same things.

Very similar in my oppinion.

Thoughts?

@@jaime_lion,

Furries is one big group of people who love animals; as far as even dressing up as them to conventions and other places. Bronies do that to. There are also NSFW sides to both.

All in all, bronies are a subgroup to furries because ponies and horses are in fact furries themselves.

They are similar. Furries and Bronies are two sub-cultures that do overlap. Like all things in pop culture you can find them showcased in the marketplace.

I knew a furry in University and I'm sorry, but I found it a bit creepy! I know people say the same about bronies, but with their reputation for having strange sexual habits I never felt comfortable around him.

Bronies are not all furries. Furries are a subculture of people dedicated to the love of antrho-animals. Bronies are fans of a specific television show. Some Bronies may be Furries, but it is not at all the same thing, anymore than fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer are the same thing as Wiccans.

I disagree completely.

Furries like stuff because it has anthro animals. Some bronies are furries, others are not. For example, a brony may like they show for the animation, or the story, or the characters.

There's a difference.

Yup, I don't watch the show because it's about ponies. It could have been humans for what I care. I watch it for the plot and the characters

Two fandoms with an overlap.

One follows a show.

One follows the broad encompassing genre of anthro animals.

The ponies aren't fully anthro but they are fleshed out enough that they catch furries eyes.

You watched the CSI episode didn't you?

Anyways yeah, I do think there's quite a bit of overlap. More than overlap, I believe that Bronies are a subset of the anthromorph sub-culture. This doesn't mean that all Bronies are furries. Heck, not even everyone who likes anthro artwork calls themselves furries. It's all subjective.

Heck, I'd say i'm both Brony and Furry, and while I consider them distinct yet overlapping tastes, I do consider them both to be part fo an overall appreciation for anthromorphic artwork and entertainment.

Got a series of videos that deals with this topic in pretty good detail.

I think the source of the fandom is what differentiates furries from bronies. Furries like animals and create animal personas. Bronies like a specific television show and sometimes create personas that fit within the world presented in the television show. This alone makes them distinct.

Similarities between the two I attribute to coincidence combined with the fringe nature of both fandoms as well as crossover with some of the fans themselves. Furries have been around longer and know how to do things like run conventions, so they are often the ones who take charge, sometimes muddying the differences further.

Some furries are bronies, some are not, and vice versa. They can overlap for certain people(emphasis on "certain people"), but that doesn't mean one is the other

Yes and no.

Way to judge. Not all furries are the same. Did you ever actually hang out with him or talk to him?

Most furries are furries because of their love for Anthro or Feral animals. Whether they be real animals or from a cartoon or movie, or some form of writing. though just like the brony fandom, there is a NSFW side to it, which does have a negative impact on the furry fandom. Which, thanks to media and hate, leads to make everyone think that ALL furries are some kind of pedophilie or some one that wants to screw animals, NO. That's mostly BS. That's called bestiality or zoophilia, which is nasty. I said "mostly" because there are, sadly, those certain ones that participate in such activities, but percentage wise in the fandom it's less than one percent, hell it's probably less than half percent. If you are going to believe media, then you're gonna have a bad time. Media puts a negative light on almost anything that is considered "weird" by society standards. Bronies included.

I myself am a furry AND a brony.

I got started in the furry fandom about 10 years ago. I found an attraction to a certain few anthro cartoon characters. I was also a fan of The Lion King growing up, and I still love that movie, it's my fave animated Disney trilogy. Then when I had internet, I discovered many sites and found more people with the same or similar interests. So I joined up on websites such as Furraffinity and Deviant Art. I also developed my very own fursona, a meerfox, which is a hybrid of a fox and a meerkat. I named him Furball.

Here's a couple pieces I had done by a couple friends of mine.

Coming form experience, both fandoms are similar but they are also different. One is based off of mostly original ideas (People making their own fursona, not related to any movie or book or TV show) The other is based off of another's work and works with the characters from that show to produce their own fan made stuff.

I'll weigh in on this:

There are a couple of variations for how the term furry is used, I make no claims as to how legitimate any of them are:

1) Someone who views themselves as, or dresses up as an animal.

2) Someone who is specifically sexually attracted to animals or anthropomorphic characters..

3) someone who simply likes anthropomorphic cartoons.

I don't entirely understand the third definition for furry. I doubt there is a person alive anymore who hasn't seen a WB or Disney cartoon or something that hasn't had human intelligence animals/anthro characters in it, and at least enjoyed an episode here or there, so spreading the definition that thin would mean you might as well just use the term "person" so I can really only personally work with the term "furry" from the first 2 definitions. Using furry in this sense would be like saying that simply hearing an ICP song makes you a juggalo or having long hair makes you a hippie.

Brony is a much more simply defined term;

1) someone who watches MLP and enjoys it for reasons beyond merely "they are cute colorful ponies!"

There really isn't any more accurate definition than that. So with that understanding, the two terms are completely separate.

There may however be a fair number of individuals that fall into both categories. If a person is a furry, they may become a brony because of their attraction to the characters, but that attraction is hardly the only reason why someone might become a brony. Likewise, a brony might decide to adopt a pony or animal persona as a form of self expression, or dress up in a full pony outfit as an expression of their fandom, thus possibly fitting the first definition of a furry.

Not dressing up as ponies or looking at pony porn doesn't make you any less of a brony, so there really isn't even any real overlap of the two terms, but merely that they are parallel interests, and a person in one group might easily find interest in the other.

The ones who are sexually attracted to anthro animals are called yiffers. Same as how there are cloppers within the brony community. Not saying there's anything wrong with either.

I reall, really dislike anthro of all types.

I like ponies just the way they are. I even, sometimes forget that they're supposed to be horses.

S'os to say, there may be furries who are bronies and bronies who are furries, but it's not right to say that all bronies are furries (and vice versa).

Better question:

Is a brony who faps to non-anthro ponies considered a furry?

I suppose that there are enough similarities to allow for crossover appeal, but I hesitate to paint a broad stroke when defining ANY community, group, or individual. As an outsider to when the media first picked up on the Brony fandom, I know how easy confirmation bias can creep in to a discussion. Also, if you parse aspects of one fandom you can draw similarities to another fandom pretty easy. I personally consider them distinct. Assuming 100% conversion between the two is like calling all Star Trek fans Futurists. Some futurists are attracted to the ST universe though.

I could go deeper into anthropological (ha) constant of our species world building and telling stories using personification and anthropomorphism, but that is a bit off topic. I just thought of Totemism when I watched the videos that were posted above.

There is quite a difference between being someone who appreciates a television show and the positive lessons drawn from it, and whatever it is that someone who identifies as a furry does. I've never felt drawn to the whole furry community, but I certainly won't cast aspersions on someone who chooses to live that lifestyle, because some of the art they create in that genre is actually quite impressive.

No. I'm even a Clopper, I don't like any 'furry stuff' other than sapient MLP FIM Alien Ponies.

Does Mass Effect sapient aliens count as furry?

Nope. Furries are into anthro and shit...or just overly obsessed with Sonic and shipping in that fandom like a crazed maniac. :P

Myself, am a brony, but I cannot stand anthro shit. I think its just a stupid concept, and only acceptable when the original idea is based around it, and done right. 90% of it, is making animal characters, into human like creatures..and I think its stupid.

I think bronies and furries are the same because:

1)They both cosplay as the character,O.C,etc.

2)Bronies like ponies (or you can say horses) as furries.

3)Some times both groups take it too extremes(if you know what I mean)

4)Both do fan stuff(art, t-shirts, merch, etc.)
