music Favorite music pieces you have played

This is the topic for musicians!

Tell every one what music you prefer playing, what instruments you use for this genre, and your favorite piece of music to PLAY (not listen to)....If you want, you could also add what song(s) you really hated to play because you didn't like the genre, key & time signature, or really any reasoning (explain about why you hate said piece(s)).

here we go!!!

I L.O.V.E. playing jazz music. There are a lot of different types of jazz out there, but I prefer jazz from the 1890's through the 1940's, mainly Swing jazz. Blues and ballads can be really boring to play.  It's been nearly 5 years since I've played in a jazz band, so right off the top of my head, I cannot think of a favorite piece because there are so many that my mind is getting all kerfuffled, but I will post when I think of some.

I was in 3 jazz bands in high school; in 2 I played Trombone (mah pride and joy) and the other one I played bari saxophone.  It was so much fun! I also was in the upper class symphonic jazz band as well as in the pit for my senior year school musical, Fiddler on the Roof (I was the only bone). I hated the music for that musical...never played with a full sharp key signature. I had to painstakingly write in the notes because I rarely deal with sharp key sigs.

My favorite songs from Symphonic band were Africa and Songs of Sailor and Sea...Africa because it more fun to watch the percussion go nuts, the trombone part wasn't very challenging or thrilling. Songs of Sailor and Sea is one of the few songs I memorized because I loved playing it so much in solo and full band practice. Performing it was a eargasming marvel!!! :D

One of the Jazz pieces I do remember because of the strange time signature. Blue Rondo A La Turk is an unforgettable piece because it's mainly written in 9/8 time, which I've never played before that piece. I think 9/8 is most common in slip jigs which is nothing like jazz....I played this as a bone and I can't say really hate this piece; it did play and sound weird because of the time sig, but I just think of a hummingbird doing its thing (and every now and then dodging some predator or danger) with this piece in the background and I just smile :)

Yamaha PSS-12 and Yamaha PSS-460 keyboards. I love Yamaha, but I can't wait to get my hooves on an OpenLabs NeKo XXL or something from Korg or Roland!

There already is a thread for instruments- http://mlpforums.com/topic/25487-what-instruments-do-you-play/

I want to know about the music you like to play and your favorite pieces :)

What music do you play on your keyboard? Do you play solo music or music with others?

Eh, well, when I HAD the keyboards, it was mainly just learning them. Otherwise I really didn't play much at all since they lacked the features that I needed to make a stable beat. What do you expect from low end Yamaha's though? lol

Moonlight Sonata Movements 1 & 2 by memory.

Maple Leaf Rag though takes the cake for my favorite to play:

But I hardly play piano now, I just stick to guitar and mandolin. Which my repertoire is too big to care to list for those two.

Hungarian Etude by Macdowell

It's a very technical piece but super fun to play

Dr. Gradus en Parnassm

This was perhaps the most diffcult piece I had to play on the piano. Imagine doing this one at 140 beats-per-minute

Or the solo version, though that is next to impossible and I only managed a few parts of it :c

How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Three percent of the population likes classical music, if only we could get it up to four percent we'd be back in business and all our problems would be over." How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Everybody loves classical music! They just haven't found out about it yet!" It's an entirely different world. It's what you make of it that counts.

I found an easy way to find out if you've inspired someone. If their eyes are shining, you know you're doing it!

Just played Traffic Jam (Halo 3: ODST) by Martin O'Donnell on my piano.  A little different compared with the original screaming Electric guitar version.

As for soloistic pieces, I quite liked Weber's Bassoon Concerto, and Mozart's as well. Weber's had always been a favorite of mine, perhaps before I had even began playing the bassoon. So I was happy to get to play it! Mozart's, oddly enough, I don't really care to listen to it, but it's fun to play.

As for band and orchestra

Orchestra, I loved Stravinksy's Rite of Spring and Holst's The Planets. Although, I'm pretty sure Rite of Spring gave me nightmares. xD It has this incredibly beautiful part in the middle of it... which may be irrelevant to mention as that whole section was just a bunch of rests for me. lol.

I also love playing anything by Mozart, because I love the way he composes for winds.

As for band, I really enjoyed Holst's Suite in Eb, and countless other pieces. However, I wanted to note this one which I got to play recently:

This was great fun, because I was the only bassoon player in the ensemble, and had lots of parts to myself! The second movement in particular is my favorite. I loved the chamber intro.

On another note, it introduced me to a whole new composer of Renaissance/Early music instrumental music, which is big for me. The director had mentioned the suite was an adaptation of Renaissance dances. So I decided to look it up, in hopes that maybe I would find some instrumental Renaissance/Early Music pieces, and I did!

(In Music History, I've always been taught that vocal music reigned supreme in the medieval and Renaissance eras, and thus, they pretty much have skipped over any mention of instrumental music, leading me to not really know of any instrumental music from those eras... Hopefully when I go back studying music history I'll learn of more.)
