I don't like G1, G2, and G3! Does anyone else?

Exactly my point.

I love the new character designs. They're "horseish" with being too "horseish". It's clearly evident that they're cartoon characters, first and foremost.

But those older gens have very distinct horse features on their long, long horse faces. Am I weird for trying to put the fact that the characters from a show I love watching are horse behind me? I don't think so. Once you consider that they're simply cartoon characters, it really makes the enjoyment level all that more higher.

At least, for me.

But anyone who likes the previous gen stuff can say the same thing, that they like MLP because it's a simple cartoon (whatever gen.) At the end of the day it's an opinion, you don't like it but not everyone shares the same opinion on it, not even on this forum.

I should be saying the same for you.

Remember friend, I'm not the one trying to force my views on other members. I'm starting my apparently unpopular opinion.

I hate g1, g2, and g3.

Well I don't really hate them I just really, really, really, dislike them.

(line by Fluttershy)

It's just so...

not cool.

Like the pony's body shapes looked too close to an actual real life pony's and their was no really cartoony essence in any of the characters.

Plus the voices were really cheesy and they pretty much all sounded the same.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I totally agree with you with this

I like all the generations but 3.5 (no offense to 3.5 lovers) I just think the heads and eyes were too big. I think they might of made them a little too cartoony in that gen.

Overall, I think g1 had better villains. g2 had no cartoon. g3 was just regrettable. And g4 had much better ponies, but the villains either didn't get enough airtime, or they ended up getting reformed, or they were minor antagonists. Not saying that g4 ponies are weaker due to having weaker villains, g1 ponies needed a chosen one with a god tier item to save them. g4 ponies can fight well with or without god tier magic/items.

"Hate" is a very strong word, one I rarely ever use seriously. I'm not going to say that I dislike the previous pony gens, because I have personally never seen any of them. They look way too girly for my tastes, and I don't think I'll ever watch them for those reasons. It's like judging a book by it's cover, some Bronies actually enjoyed the previous pony gens, but I can't say I "like" or "dislike" the previous gens because I haven't viewed any of them for myself.

I kind of like them actually, considering that G1 is from the 1980's. At that time it's like whoa. I watched G2 and G3 but I'm still not very familiar with them.

One of the aspects I did like about past generations is the fact that they had REALLY GOOD villains, for a kid's show. Villains without the IQ of artificially synthesized soap, that's worth dying for. FiM had ok villains but they always do something stupid in the end and screw up, such as singing, go like "crystal crystal crystal it's mine crystal crystal," or laugh hahahahahaha and do nothing as the elemental powers slowly built up.

One part I DO NOT like about past generations though, is the fact that the ponies are like hyper-sensitive and easily tear up. It's heart rending at first, but after like 43825690765932623478563089 times even a guy like me would go like "eh. There goes again."

I wouldn't say I like G1 as much as I'd say that I respect it.  The first special, "Rescue at Midnight Castle" surprised me with how dark it was (I legitimately *like* Tirek) and while I wouldn't watch the rest of the G1 series today I can't say that it was that bad compared to other 80s cartoons.  After all, it was by the same people who did GI Joe and Transformers, which I do enjoy, albeit in part due to nostalgia.

The rest, though?  I've watched an episode of Tales and G3 and found them rather difficult to sit through. If I had my way (and I do) I'd never watch either for an extended period of time ever again.  Well, I wouldn't go out of my way to watch G1 again, but while I find most G1 to be somewhat trite and boring as an adult, I get the feeling I might have been ok with it as a kid.  I don't think I'd ever have enjoyed Tales or G3, though.

Well, I watched Gens 1 and 3 with my sister when I was a bit younger, and honestly; they weren't that bad. They weren't spectacular, but I don't think they deserve the hate they get. G1 actually had a lot of adventure-like plot lines, and G3 could be just a fun show to watch.

As for G2, I've never seen it, so I can't say.

I guess I am one of those ones who only like the G4 generation... I mean knowing that the other gens were really girly and well yeah I have not seen anything from those gens and neither do I plan on it.... Idk though I don't think I'd like them from what I have been hearing from other people.

I just haven't really seen or read anything about the previous generations that makes them sound like anything I'd want to sit through a whole episode for.

I don't hate them, I'm indifferent.

Just for clarification, G2 didn't have a cartoon. If you look into the history of MLP, you will understand why.. G2 is defined as the change in the toy line itself. My Little Pony tales, which a lot of bronies seem to identify as G2 is actually in the same style as G1, the toys and animation are pretty much the same the only difference is the setting the ponies live in is different.

G2 is a direct and very obvious change in the whole toy line and art style for MLP, that is why it is called G2. There are other reasons G2 is called G2, but I'm not going to get into those here.

For your actual history lesson:

MY Little Pony franchise consists of:

1981 - Hasbro first production of a MLP, large pony called My Pretty Pony

1982 thru 1995 Hasbro G1 toy production.

1984 - the first TV special was created - aka "Rescue at Midnight Castle"/"Firefly's Adventure"

1985 - second TV special was created - Escape from Catrina

1986 - My Little Pony the Movie

1986-1987 - My Little Pony TV series

1992 - My little Pony Tales TV series

As you can see, G1 production continued from 1982 thru 1995 - Tales was created in 1992, still during and within the Generation 1 timeline, toy and animation are the same.

Generation 2 MLP didn't have a cartoon, it's production started in 1997 and was a clear defined difference from what was produced previously. The art style and toys were completely different.

People that know very little of MLP history and some who clearly hate or dislike previous generations seem to be only going by the animation when they call Tales G2, but EVEN if you go by the animation the art style is the same and the toys are exactly the same.

Generation 3 started in 2003 - again, animation and toy were different from what came before.

People can deny it, argue it, but frankly if you look at the actual facts, time, dates and production of animation and toy it's obviously that Tales is part of G1.

I like G1 but not nearly as much as G4, G1 has its flaws but you would be surprised at how dark some of the villains are particularly Tirek, Grogar and the Shmooze. Those guys especially Grogar are everything that King Sombra could have been.

So you wanted him to be over the top ham? Whats wrong with a Sauron expy?

  • 2 weeks later...

Then you have a disrespectful mind and thoughts to what MLP truly is. Without previous generations FiM would have never existed, and Lauren Faust by herself would have created a really bad done show.

Also... If you don't like G1,G2 and G3... You like G3.5 or what?

I really dislike the previous generations, too. I tried to watch My Little Pony: The Runaway Rainbow, and I had to stop watching the terrible thing. There was basically nothing funny about it, and they were just basically annoying! G2 looked hideous, with the teeny heads and the skinny, long and tall bodies! Blech. G1 could've been good, if it never had Megan, Molly or Dan. I've always hated the idea of humans in the MLP series, and I only would like them if they were in their own world, like Equestria Girls. They are in their own world, and ponies are in their own worlds. That idea seems better. Anyways, you and I have similar thoughts about the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad previous generations of MLP.

I like G1, but I don't care much for G3. G2 is pretty much a whole toyline, there isn't a show to go along with it.

With G1, however, the only cartoon I like in that generation is My Little Pony and Friends, since it has some villains that would be considered darker than G4's villains. Plus, I'm actually fine with Megan, Molly and Dan. My Little Pony Tales is garbage, however.
