gaming Is the video game industry dying?

I was watching the game theory about this. But what do you think. There is no innovation in the video game industry. Call of Duty for example. Its the same concept every year. And Call of Duty 10 is confirmed.

Franchises are safe for developers. I'd guess if things are stagnant and major studios aren't trying anything really fresh, it's probably an economic thing. I wouldn't worry though, the way funding works these days, we're seeing way more indie games that can actually compete with major titles. So unless people are playing games less, you're probably fine.

It's been said before too that a lot of modern gamers are pacified with the same warmed-over formula a hundred times over so .. well, there's that too. I guess it's good for people who release the same sports games every year. Since people want to buy them. Apparently.

Not dying, as sales are increasing and more money is being made than ever. They are just stagnating. Due to consumers, games are now becoming more and more bland, to appeal to more people, to make more money.

Nope, it's blooming. There is innovation, we are getting closer to virtual reality. One day we'll have nerve gear like in Sword art online, oculus rift for example got us closer. So there is plenty of room for the gaming industry to grow.

The occulus rift got bought out by facebook. So unless you like playing candy crush and farmville 3d............

I refuse to buy a new console. I have a Xbox 360, but compared to the consoles of old, apart from Halo and GTA the games were so-so. By the way, the Dreamcast was the best console ever!

The big companies may keep rehashing the same old ideas without trying anything new, and video game reviewer websites might sell out to those industries and be forced to love and sell those same-y games... but the Indie gamer scene will always be better than miniature minigame phone apps.

The gaming industry has indeed been getting more and more unoriginal with their games, like the fact that the COD franchise has a ton of games and they are basically the same. However some games come along now and again that are great and have truly groundbreaking and original concepts like Skyrim. However overall I think that although the industry isn't dead, they just love rehashing the same crap over and over again because COD is the 'in' thing I guess.

Have you tried indie games? They can easily be just as bad as company made games, but because of the lack of corporate interference they have more freedom. The developers are allowed to focus more on what they want their game to be. Most of my favorite games from the last ten years are indies.

I think the video game industry is going strong as it ever was. Sure, there are games that attempt little innovation, such as Call of Duty. But at the same time, there are great games, such as Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Pokemon, and such that are going strong to this day. We have great consoles, and great games for them.

Trust me when I say, the industry isn't going anywhere.

Though, of course, you're free to believe what you want.

Dying?

Are you trolling?

The game industry is exploding in popularity and innovation at the moment. Sure, COD may not be very innovative, but that isn't the only game, nor the face of games. Just look at the new Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z, it's two GTX Titans combined into one GPU. It's showing the surface of the graphics that will be the norm in 10 (approx.) years. Now people are able to simulate incredibly detailed and beautiful scenes in real-time.

Go look at the Steam store and look at every single game on there. There's loads of content, the game industry is NOWHERE near dying. It may never die actually, considering people want entertainment, and we're leaning towards a more technological future.

The Oculus RIFT is not the only VR headset. Take a look at Sony's new 'Project Morpheus'

Okay, I did not know about it. Facebook most likely will, but there are others copying it. The point was simply that it's not dying.

It's the first of it's kind. It will definitely improve in years to come.

EDIT: Yes, Virtual Boy was the first. I know.

Even though it is the same concept, we'll see what the COD new developer will do.

I have a feeling it will still suck like all the others. And then there are the COD fanboys that defend the series no matter what even if they know there is something that sucks.

It's not dying, but there are less and less games that look interesting to me. Many games are awfully simplified (and while I am perfectly ok with it because some people just prefer easy games I find it bad that there is no alternative for players who want a challenge). DLCs that first were quite good idea are used by some greedy companies like EA games to just shamelessly milk cash from customers. Also now people are so happy about "patches" when they are made and game works better. 10-15 years ago games bugged like even Battlefield 4 would be bashed and EA would lose many customers for releasing something that works like that. Reviewers would also've been quite merciless. Also even 5 years ago there were at least 10 games per year that would interest me. Now? In 2014 I wait for two games. And my taste has not changed in this time. So as a conclusion - not dying for sure, only it seems it changes direction. And I don't think I like the way it is going now.

About CoD...

It's easy to say that they keep rehashing the same game every year when the only games that get exposure are Infinity ward's games. Treyarch happily treads on new ground (and constantly gets harassed by fans for it). Hell, Black Ops 1 had more innovation than Ghosts!

It's all a matter of "if it ain't broke, don't fix ", I guess.

*shrug*

On topic..

Nope. Unless the trend of freemium games and playable movies (like Beyond Two Souls) continue, I see a long happy relationship with video games and consumers.

VR will be just like motion controls from way back...

It'll be a craze for a bit, and then it'll die down. Calling it!

What? No. That's a pretty wild claim.
Yes, we are getting a lot of clone games. But even so, that's not every game going on the market. It isn't even a superior chunk. Call of Duty is a single franchise.
Video game creation has never been easier than before. Practically anyone can go onto their computer, and start designing something, often using pre-made programs, built for the sole purpose of helping people start developing video games. With indie gaming going on with full force, there is no lack of unique gaming and peripheral access. The only dangers posed are to gaming giants who now have to compete with the smaller by significantly greater number gaming world. They're going to have to learn to adapt, or else risk being washed away.
Video games are certainly not on a decline.

Also, regarding the Facebook issue, I think people are just blowing a lot of steam. "Oh no! Facebook has it! It's ruined now! All we will ever get is Farmville and Candy Crush(not owned by Facebook, by the way)!" Please, stop, take a deep breath, and rethink the situation if you plan on writing this.

Basically, what it sounds like isn't the end of gaming peripherals. What we have instead, is the Oculus team(still working on the project, by the way. They didn't get magically fired and thrown to the dogs, forever leaving OR in it's current state.) continuing to do as they wish and creating the ultimate VR system, all without the previous restrictions involving funds, resources, and other monetary requirements. They're pretty much free to go full steam ahead with the development, unimpeded.
Facebook just gets a cut of the profits.
Heck, Mark Zuckerberg, being the tech-fiend he is, actually seems genuinely interested in the product itself.

It's by no means dying. It's poised (if not already in many areas) out performing/producing ALL other forms of media (in terms of monetary accomplishments). It's already bringing in more money than Hollywood worldwide, and is set to become the mainstream media giant that TV was back in the 60's.

As far as the industry itself is concerned compared to a few years ago, it's changing. How it carries itself in terms of game production, marketing, and mediums is creating a vastly different economic backdrop than what the 90's-early 00's had, let alone the mid-late 80's. In other words, the Video Game Industry is changing with the changing technologies that its customer base uses. That's how every new console comes about. And as long as the companies stay smart (*coughdontbelikeatariorcurrentlymicrosoftcough*) we may see the "death" of the video game console as we know it, but the rise of something everyone with cling to (just as everyone did with the rise of the home console).....
