Maybe it's because they've got something in their mind as if something tragic happened. That might be the case.

Because we're like the internet's official butt-monkey and being on the wrong end of every joke can be depressing.

I think that the overall message of the show does attract a lot of people who feel sad and lonely, and they flock to the fandom because there are kindred souls and little judgement.

To further my first point, just a bit, we can empathize with the Mane 6 because they are imperfect, but can, or at least try to, rectify or accept their imperfections with the help of their friends, and as morose as it may sound, a lot of people wish that they had that ability.  But that might be why people befriend other bronies in the first place.

Maybe I'm one of those exceptions but I've noticed that depression and sadness is running kinda rampant in the fandom.

I think it's just because a lot of the members here are in their mid to late teens and that's just a confusing time in everyone's lives. I was depressed as a teenager.

In college, you either learn to live with the confusing aspects of life and adjust accordingly, despite unfortunate circumstances or you fall flat on your face and get down on yourself.

In my twenties, I'm generally pretty happy. Except for finals week. That's always a stressful time.

It's hard to stay happy when the world is a dark and depressing place, ponies are what make us feel a little bit of happiness.

It's the only happiness i have in my life at the moment so i see your point

It may also be to do with what's acceptable to talk about. A heartfelt show about expressing emotions is more likely to prompt discussion about someone's depression. A group of Dr. Who fans might prompt more science/media/technology discussion; but those Dr. Who fans could still be having a very depressing time in their lives.

If you read on depression, one thing that comes up is that depressed people usually don't show their feelings to others. When there's a suicide, or a psychotic breakdown leading to a school shooting, the neighbors report "He always seemed so normal and cheerful".

Honestly, in most internet social scenes, for someone to be the one person who always makes posts like "My mom was yelling at me for something I didn't do when I got home and life is miserable and I was really thinking about overdosing until I came on here" would not win you very many friends - it would seem out of place, and probably anyone who would otherwise see you as 'cool' would suddenly not want to spend so much time with you.

But here, the overall tone of the show, fan-works, etc. probably prompts more people to be more open about things (Try and count how many MLP episodes end with "I didn't know how you felt!"). Then, seeing the number of people willing to open themselves up prompts themselves to be more open. It becomes like an AA meeting.

Gonna agree with Woona here. The primary demographic for the show falls on the age group that's most likely to be depressed, men age 18-24, as impressed onto me during my high school study of technology. It's just inevitable that a lot oft hem are getting scooped up in an internet meme centered around a bright and happy show.

Ponies (and to me Adventure Time) = Happiness (and since we all have our issues and most of us want to feel happy we get united watching these shows)

And EVERYONE in the world whether a brony or not HAS problems and issues of their own

Life is not perfect and if it was we wouldn't learn a thing, we would basically have the intelligence of a new born baby and there wouldn't be a point on living

It CAN be a coincidence that we all have BIG issues at the same time BUT it is a fact that EVERYONE has issues that make us sad in a regular basis

AND some people are really good at faking their happiness and/or decide to take their frustration on others to make themselves feel good and not alone (as in they make the other person feel like crap because THEY feel like crap so now that they both feel like crap the one starting stuff doesn't feel alone) perhaps brony haters can fall under this I just stated XD

Another thing is that SOME people decide to still be stuck on their situation EVEN when they know what they have to do to solve it while other people decide that life moves on and whatever lets keep rollin'

Maybe it's a coincidence maybe not but we all have issues for sure

I have bipolar and am usually stuck in major depression, when I discovered MLP I was in big funk and suicidal. It was great and took my mind off of everything as I immersed myself in the show and the fandom. I think the reason that people have trouble with sadness in the community is because it is possible that a lot of people get into the show because they are sad and like the simple happiness of the show. I understand the faking happiness stuff, I feigned happiness to everyone for about 6 years, the reason is people don't understand why they are depressed, especially if they have decent/good lives so they feign happiness because they don't want people to know they have uncontrollable sadness.

Now it's time for my soapbox rant. If you are depressed I highly suggest you get help. I did and I can't tell you how nice it is to get better and not feel they way I know you feel. People should realize mental illness is like any other illness and can be treated, even though it may seem like it can't. Don't be embarrassed, depression is super common and if you are like me with bipolar, you may not know but someone you are close to could too. It's very common like 2 in 5 people. Don't be fooled if you are a guy by the patriarchal, you have to be a man and not talk about your feelings, it's all BS. There is actually a new documentary about boys with depression and it shows how much it can take a toll when you don't think you can get help or even shed a tear.

'S just cause they're depressed.Depression is depression. Only they themselves can cure. Not everypony here's depressed though. If you're ever feelin' sad, you can talk to me ;). Of course, I can't do anything about it ;v; Wish i could.

What what I've read up from other bronies, documentries, news and personal stories etc.

Male bronies tend to be those guys that live day to day with not much motivation due to hard life styles, bad economy, rough family times, or just the in general situation of some of our countries, we're in a time of uncertainty with war, and financial burdens.

That said when some of these bronies discovered the show, their spirits were lifted more, and were able to pick themselves up for the most part. However this does NOT mean their problems or emotions are gone, if all else, they face even more challenges with liking the  show, that, according to current society, isn't masciline... :fiery: Society has not evolved to accept different activities in gender roles folks, it's a sad fact, but one day it may change, till then, know that odds are your gonna have a bit tougher being a brony in school or with your families that aren't open minded.

But on a personal note... if you bronies are the "sad" type, understandable, but if you find the show enjoyable and have joined the community, find the strength within you to perk up and be merry! You're amongst friends now that love the show just like you do, it's time now to turn this sadness into joy!

I think it's partially because people coming into the MLP community are people that are looking for some type of acceptance and reassurance themselves. What better place to look for friendship than an community based around honoring the -magic- of it. I myself see days down on my luck quite often, but I keep the stay positive, give everypony the benefit of the doubt mentality. Depression is common among a lot of people these days, People can get positive, but it's about staying positive, and that troubles us all, facing hardships positively, certainly sounds a lot easier than it is. I know this from personal experience with them, but negativity doesn't help anything, as good as it may feel to give up sometimes, it feels better to persevere, and to remember there was somepony out there that had it worse than you, and made it.

Since most Bronies are from an internet community I suspect there is a significant amount of us that are nerdy or social deviant.

I myself am wrought with social anxiety and quirks but in no sense is this a bad thing.

The majority of Bronies are prone to being socially supportive, hence why people with insecurities would gravitate here. There are so many members who a great role models with firm social integrity and we can't help but want to be apart of them because of how we look up to and relate to them.

Where there's a Brony there is a sense of security and family, and that's how it should be.

Posibility and Potential are my two favorite words.

Because the age demographic for depression (at its largest amounts) falls step in step with the most common age demographic for the brony fandom. Not to mention that large amounts of this fandom are current for former social outcasts, and that also increases depression rate. So you have the statistical high depression group, combined with the social outcasts, which make for a largely sad group o folks.

And the show is bright happy dancy ponies. It is bright and colorful and for the most part does not interact with negative ideals the world holds. So it is perfect for some minor escapism.

This forum seems to be a very safe, and accepting place. So people can talk about their problems here, and get support.

Also, I read somewhere that bronies are escapists. We escape the harsh reality of real life via technicolor ponies. (Which isn't a bad thing)

I dunno. I know in my case, it feels like I'm ignored everywhere, and it feels like I don't have any friends...not just talking here. I try to stay positive, but it still lingers.

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.

I am not a very sad person, actually. But rest assured that I do love mlp as much as the next brony. But maybe bronies are sad because everyone is always telling bronies that mlp suck and if they like it they suck or it's for babies.

People who are sad and depressed tend to get a lot of attention, someone who says something like "I had a great day, I ate my favorite meal, I got a raise at work and I found out my crush feels the same way" they tend to get less attention than someone who says something like "my life sucks, what is the point of even living anymore I might as well put a bullet in my head." That is not to say that there aren't a significant amount of bronies that are going through tough times as the economy kind of sucks right now it is putting alot of people through more pressure than they might otherwise be put under with jobs being scarce and the cost of living continuing to go up while the average person is getting screwed over harder and harder.

Fandoms in general tend to attract a lot of people who are socially awkward and as someone who has struggled with this I can say firsthand that being rejected and judged by so many people for such stupid reasons can be humiliating and soul crushing. The only reason why I advanced to the point where I don't give a damn what people think is because I went through years of hell trying to fit in and learned that there is a lot less pain and humiliation if I just say to hell with it and be myself regardless of what a bunch of shallow pricks think but a lot bronies and people in general haven't learned this lesson yet which is why a lot of bronies tend to get defensive with haters and trolls instead of ignoring them.

And I think this fandom attracts a lot of people that want something more positive in their lives, I suspect that many of these people are on a subconscious level more likely to give MLP a chance because they can sense that. To make a long story short there are a lot of reasons why bronies or anyone for that matter is or can be depressed, trust me I have been through depression many times in my life and am struggling with it now and each time I had it there were different things that triggered it.
