general media The Star Wars EU No Longer Canon: Thoughts?

The Cynical Lone Wolf

Recommended Posts

So... Imagine how you would feel if Equestrian Girls was canon.

Not just canon, but the new direction of the show. The entire show was about Canterlot High or whatever. Highschool drama, romantic tension between Twi and what's his face... All that bullshit. That's the new show. Imagine how angry you'd be.

Now multiply that by about 10 and you'd start to get a sense for how fucking pissed I am. In fact, to say I am fucking pissed would be an understatement on par with saying "Hitler was a bit of a jerk" (just Godwin's Law'd myself and I don't even give a fuck because I am that fucking angry).

Might as well rant here because Lucasfilm isn't likely to read it no matter where I post it.

First off, Lucas is an idiot and nobody really took him seriously when he said EU wasn't canon anyway. I mean, this is the guy who came up with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for fucks sake. He never did much that interfered with EU anyway. Sure, Clone Wars messed up some stuff, but it's actually a pretty good series anyway, if you can look past the Jar Jar and C3PO episodes. It's no Avatar or Gargoyles, but it's solid. (I was pretty pissed about the whole "Mandalore is peaceful" bullshit, but I just tell myself that once the empire started fucking everybody over, they got their shit together and became badass motherfuckers again.)

In any case, most of EU is better than the movies anyway.

And now they're just throwing it all out. And don't give me that bullshit about using some parts of it; at best they'll have a characters that share names, maybe occupations. A company or gang here and there might do the same stuff they did in EU. There might even be a few story arcs based on EU stuff. But we all know that most of EU will be ignored, and what isn't will be a butchered, pathetic imitation of what it was before. This is the last we'll see of a Thrawn that is worthy of being Thrawn.

I'm probably going to end up just denying the new shit even exists for as long as possible. The only way I'll be okay with this is if 7-9 are goddamn cinematic masterpieces, but even then I'll probably just look at them as really well done spin-offs. And we all know that will never happen because Lucasfilm is involved.

Seriously, Disney. You own Marvel, take a leaf out of their book and make this an alternate universe or some shit. Don't just fuck all of your most devoted fans like this.

In conclusion... Fuck Disney. Fuck Lucasfilm. Fuck anybody and everybody who thought this was a good idea. I hate you all. I wish a thousand years of misfortune upon you and your families.

tl;dr: I am beyond incredibly fucking pissed.

Equestria Girls is in the same canon as Friendship Is Magic. But you don't need to know that... :derp:

I never really got into the EU all that much, asides from those books about Han and Leia's kids.

I can get why fans are mad. The EU has an ungodly number of books, and such. So much work went into the EU, and now it's nothing but fanfiction.

I feel kind of sorry for the people who had invested into the expanded universe, but one way or another, this is a hard lesson to take in, and it goes like this:...

Q: How do you kill a vampire? Is it garlic, stakes, crosses, a complex procedure involving cutting off their head and burying it in a cemetery?

A: The fact is, you can kill a vampire any way you like, because they don't exist.

You can pretty much decide for yourself what parts of fiction you believe in and don't believe in. One way or another, Disney wasn't likely to mesh their newer stuff in with the expanded world, so nothing on its own has been lost.

The same is true for MLP at times. Honestly? Some of my favorite stuff comes out of the fans, not from the show or comics. Definitely not canon.

I, for one, will never accept Disney's new "canon" as the real story of what actually happened. I will see the new films, but they will never count as canon in my book. My Star Wars began on may 25th, 1977, and it ended on april 25th, 2014. After spending 17 years of my 20 year existence, invested on the Expanded Universe characters, I feel as though I truly know Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa Solo, and Han Solo on a personal level. I witnessed Luke forming the New Jedi Order, and I was there to watch the Solo kids grow up, and become the New Galactic heroes. I shared in on their family drama, happy moments, and tragedies. These characters have become more real and beloved to me than anything Disney could ever possibly come up with, and it's heartbreaking to see it all go down the proverbial shitter.

It breaks my heart, I mean yes there was a lot of bad but there was also some really amazing stuff and the Star Wars EU has been going on for at least what...25 years or so? That is a lot of history to throw away.

38 years.

As a long time contributor to Wookieepedia, I was forced to leave the site I had held so dear to my heart for so many years, because the administrators were determined to take the Wiki to a direction where I just can't follow.
They're all perfectly willing to do a site-wide overhaul, and to act as if EU never mattered in the first place simply to preserve Wookieepedia's status as an "official friend of Lucasfilm's".
It makes me fucking sick.
Fuck Lucasfilm, fuck Wookieepedia, and, most of all, fuck the Walt Disney Company.

You people kept whining about George Lucas, and now that he's sold the franchise because so many people were so dissatisfied with his handling of the saga, are you happy with the results?

At the very least, George allowed the Expanded Universe to flourish unhindered for the most part, and now the entire thing is gone forever, likely never to be seen again. Edited by Derp My Life

Wait, Wookiepedia is doing what??

What the actual fuck.

Fuck you too, Wookiepedia.

Well, guess you it's time for a massive download of all of Wookiepedia's everything so we can make a new site that preserves the EU.

I loved that site, it was my main go to place for Star Wars info but now they can go fuck themselves.

I don't think Wookiepedia would actually "purge" all their old articles would they?

Pretty much everything in the EU is still going to exist in a sort of "ambiguously canon state" and they could just make their articles have a place for "Star Wars Legends" stuff.

Hey what do you know, Wookiepedia is doing exactly what I said

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:CT:Legends_and_Canon_coverage?t=20140503022331#Split_the_new_canon_off_to_a_new_wiki

There are currently lots of votes for "cover both" and exactly zero votes for splitting them off in any way.

Also, I seem to get conflicting sources on this, but it sounds like maybe it's only the post ROTJ stuff that won't be canon.

So Knights of the Old Republic would still be safe.

I am not a Star Wars fan so my opinion doesn't count. Nevertheless here it is. It seems to me that the only thing anybody ever liked about Star Wars was the original trilogy. Heck, they were milking that cash cow for 16 years with no new material, selling the same warmed over merchandise. And even after the prequels, the majority of the merchandise was just new Darth Vader toys.

And the only thing anybody ever liked about the original trilogy was space ships and light sabers. There is nothing of any real substance about the movies that is noteworthy. It's just good special effects. Granted, effects that are better than most CGI crap today. But it's nothing worth dedicating your life over.

As for expanded universe material, I'm sure some of it is quite good. But a good writer can make a good story with any setting. I don't think there is anything special about Star Wars source material.

Splitting would be the best idea. A subwiki for EU, a subwiki for the new shit. They're separate canons, keep them separate. Unless that's what "cover both" would mean.

I just don't want to have to dig through paragraphs of "Luke did x, y and z. But in legends, he did f, g and h."

And dammit, Andaason, stop bringing your level-headed reasoning here. Let me overreact in peace D:<

Yeah let's take a moment to look at exactly what the announcement said before we start our Chicken-Little antics:

"In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe."

That's the point. A lot of EU is better than the movies. Now they're throwing out EU in favor of more movies and other such things.

No. The Lucasfilm storygroup  has declared EU non-canon in its ENTIRETY. Not just post-ROTJ stuff.

As for Wookiepedia actually throwing out articles and article sections?

obiwanheadshake.gif

No, just no. They could have just as easily placed noncanon alert section headers around the noncanon text. I've been working with Wikias since 2009, and I think a lot of the Wikia community will find this to be a lazy and innapropriate move on Wookiepedia's part.

Everything I can find online about this seems to just go back to that one announcement posted on starwars.com, and it isn't super clear about that.

Oh, so say I went to Palpatine's page. At the top, it'd have actual tabs, like browser tabs, for new stuff and Legends?

I am okay with that. Provided there's an option to default to Legends :P

I hate to say this, but there will not be an option to default to legends, because Wookieepedia is a source for canonical information, first and foremost, and since EU is now nothing more than reference material, it will not count as canon.

Honestly I don't mind. Star Wars canon has always been a confusing labyrinth of precedence. All of the EU materials are still there and can be played or read as such.

If someone wants to take the helm and give us something completely new with the franchise I love so dearly, I say more power to them! I have total confidence they won't repeat the mistakes of the prequel trilogy, which honestly I don't think was that bad to begin with.

Plus, now all my knowledge of the novels and games won't spoil anything that will happen in the movie, it'll be a totally new theater experience! Which, as a loyal Star Wars fan, would be wonderful!

That would be the gist of it, yes. They do the tabs function on the Halloween Franchise Wiki for the multiple timelines.
