I found the song itself funny :D I don't know why people keep throwing out the term "cringe-worthy" like it's a bad thing, though.

I think, judging by how embarrassed and how bad he felt afterwards, that the writers kind of wanted you to feel bad for him; create more of an emotional investment in the story. A  good story features more than just happy emotions, and I think that was one of the great things about this episode; while the song itself was humorous, the little guy was genuinely embarrassed; you, the viewer, felt that way, too; I know I felt bad for the guy after the song.

All part of the build-up to the kickass ending, though :D Tell me, if he didn't humiliate himself beforehand, would that ending have had near the effect that it did? :D

You've got quite a good point ghostie.

As a singer and lyricist that was definitely painful. I just had to feel for the dude, and halfway through I had to stop listening. I kept watching, but the audio was a bit too 'oh god' for me to handle. I've never been one to handle awkward moments well.

It was the absolute worst moment of the episode. I succumb to second-hand embarassment very easily, and so I almost couldn't sit through it. It was just so awful.

My fave part was Twilight face when spike mentioned time travel. I laughed so hard!

It was supposed to be an uncomfortable scene. For Spike, and by extension, for all his friends (except Pinkie Pie and her words of encouragement).

Still, it got better for the Crystal Empire's Knight Defender.

The whole point of the scene is that it was supposed to make you cringe. It was supposed to make the whole audience in the stadium cringe. If it made the audience watching at home cringe, that means the writers did their job exactly right.

If you laughed the whole way through it then you're probably a Pinkie Pie, and you'd have laughed if you were there as well. Again, the writers did it exactly right.

I cringed for Spike from start to finish, but that just made me feel horrible for him. And making the audience feel bad for Spike was the writers intent.

Moral of the story: Characters don't always do what you'd like them to do, and writers can be cruel. So very cruel.

I actually had to skip over that part, it was just too unbearable to sit through. I was just so embarrassed for him. I haven't had to do something like that since I was ten. So yes, it was a horrible part of the episode. Enough to ruin the whole thing? No, but nearly as bad.

That was just beyond terrible.

Like, I had to mute the TV for the majority of that part because it was so bad :eww:

I loved it even though I found it hard to watch. I really felt sympathetic for Spike, as I was in a very similar situation last December that involved having a panic attack with my entire family and most of my friends watching. This scene was brilliant, even if it is an old gag.

I thought it was hilarious. Spike thinks he can sing.

Reminds me of a really funny basketball star commercial. Go watch it if you know the NBA and James Harden:

It was very, very, extremely cringe-worthy

Yep, paused the video a few times and almost walked away. Wish it focused more on the Equestria games... the build up for it and then for it to be like a backstory for a Spike episode...

I couldn't bare to watch it myself, personally.

It was one of those weird moments when watching a show where the character is in such an embarrassing situation, I actually hide myself behind a pillow. Which I did, it was kind of funny.

I'm not much of a Spike fan, but I really did feel bad for the poor guy.

I def felt weird inside, the awkward mood was perfect, but I still laughed because it was funny, but it was a laugh with a pinch of guilt attached to it.

Come to think of it, the tendency says here that most of you actually cringed, felt bad for him, paused, could not stand the scene and yada-yada-yada means that it paid off for the writers, producers and animators. The scene was about feeling something and apparently we all did, we felt really bad for Spike.

In how many cartoons have you seen this grounded awkward mood as big as this one? It was a terrific job in the end and it delivered majorly.

I suffer pretty bad second hand embarrassment whenever I watch someone suffer like that I screen, so the scene made me uncomfortable.

I still laughed a bit despite the feeling, so I can't deny it was a well written, humors scene.

All in all, I'd consider it a positive since the scene elected emotion and made me laugh out loud several times.

(edited)

The issue isn't so much as Spike itself. I liked the fact he was being creative on the spotlight. The issue was that he was disrespecting an anthem in the process. If he did that anywhere else, he would be creamed. I'm surprised he wasn't creamed to a pulp by the Cloudsdale administrators for that. I'm glad he redeemed himself at the end of the games though.

EDIT: Was also very disappointed that we didn't get to hear the real Cloudsdale anthem.

I think the fact that it went on so long is what made it so memorable.

You got the jist the of the joke in the first few seconds of him singing, but to have his humiliation just keep going, and going...

it was cringe worthy but that was the point. the point was too feel Spikes awkwardness and it seceded in that. I also found the whole think funny and it was my favorite part of the episode.

  • 1 year later...

It was cringe worthy, but it's okay, as it was their intention anyway. I mean, it's not usual for me to feel bad for  the public embarrassment   of a fictional character, and that's a success in my opinion
