No indication of Rainbow Dash's actual sexuality?

@@pony.colin, I'm not sure if I'd buy completely into that, but something like that I guess.

The mane reason I could tell right away that Rainbow Dash is a female is just because of the voice and the way her body is drawn.

I mean, I guess she could've been a dude with a kind of effeminate body shape, but since this is a show directed at young children I didn't think that was the case.

Also, the tomboy thing didn't throw me off because I enjoy tomboyish female characters, and I just kinda figured that was her thing.

I never once have thought she was a lesbian in anyway. My dad said she's a lesbian and a symbol for gay pride because of the whole rainbow thing. After calling him a dumbass and explaining it to him. He hasn't said a word about it.

@@pony.colin,The data you have provided has been the reason for controversy and has been disputed as invalid. So i would suggest you do not quote it in depth next time.

There will always be some controversy with the results of the social sciences, nothing new.   This happened to one of the things I learned about, although the Kinsey scale really only measures things at a very small scale.   Could be out of date and something new is being used, but I haven't followed psychology for years so can't say any other than that.

I actually meant in the sense that you weren't socially primed to only observe one's behavior to determine their gender as an obvious cue.  Maybe I should have said that.

Ha ha, I dunno about that...

I grew up in the type of area where gender stereotypes are extremely reinforced (inner city/ghetto area), but maybe it's actually an effect where I didn't buy that and tried my best to look beyond it.

You're making me want to look up gender studies about this type of effect, as I'm getting genuinely curious about this. I've never looked into gender studies too deeply, but I want to know what sort of findings there are on the subject.

LOL get ready for a long ride, because the one you can be guaranteed about that topic is that everything is controversial and in dispute. Scientists say something, regular people say other, no less legitimate things, everybody has an opinion based on experience or research.

My dad would sigh and pine for the days of his youth when men were men and women were women and there wasn't any "in-between".

My own opinion? Who cares? And nopony in MLP is any-sexual, obviously they're asexual because they're cartoon ponies.

I've looked into it before but I stayed away precisely because of so many conflicting studies and arguments I saw. But I'd be willing to give it another go.

Actually, that's not necessarily true. Rarity obviously likes males, even if her crushes all end up being "silly" there's no disputing that. Mr. and Mrs. Cake are obviously heterosexual as they're married and had kids.

RD: Applejack, I care for you a lot.

AJ: I care for you, too.

RD: And... I love you.

AJ: Shucks. I love you, too. Rainbow Dash.

*RD and AJ nuzzle each other.*
AJ: So what's this deep secret you've been wanting to tell me?

RD: Uh...I've been attracted to you for a long time.

AJ: Well I'm pretty amazing. So I can see.

RD: No, I mean like attracted as in a boy sees a girl.

AJ: Oh... I don't get it.

RD: *Sighs and kisses AJ.*

AJ: Whoa, there RD. Have you been practicing with Pinkie Pie?

RD: Yes, I have.

Holy celestia! I did not think this was going to such a big topic! this hole thing is getting way bigger then I ever thought it would be. what I really should have sad was:

should RD have a simple love interest (male or female) like Rarity and Twilight or should she never have a crush on anypony? I think the show would be better with out any RD love interest.

but this has been a fascinating topic. what makes some one a boy or girl with out having boy or girl parts in a cartoon? is it voice and body style alone? the original durpy voice (the first time I saw the episode was with the original voice) was that of a young boy (the VA did not know that durpy was girl and used a young boys voice) and I always thought durpy was a girl, did I miss the clue there?

just one last thing for the people who don't under stand how anyone could think RD was a boy at anypoint: this show is so much more "girl looking" with the bight colors and curved pony bodys, then any other show I have ever seen, that even the males in the show look feminine to me at first.the royal guards and shining armor just look like girl ponys with square mouths to me.

Well, I found this on DevianART. It was made back in Nov. 2011 and the uploader allows all to spread the word. Here's the link to the original page, if you'd like: http://grampagort.deviantart.com/art/A-Word-From-Rainbow-Dash-271027975

Alright, Rainbow Dash, why don't you tell everyone your opinion on sexual orientation?

I find this message very heartwarming!  Do you agree?

When someone starts to watch the show, he can't know these are typical mare traits.

Personally, I don't see how anyone could mistake that cutie patootie RD for a boy with: 1. long eyelashes, 2. a feminine snout shape, 3. an occasionally squeaky voice and squeaky laugh, 4. gorgeous rainbow-colored mane

When I watched the first 2 episodes I didn't assume she was gay. Rainbows seem appropriate for something primarily aimed at little girls. I wondered if she was a boy because of how she acted/sounded and because of her short top mane. Also since you don't really have any indication of their ages until later episodes, her voice would be acceptable for a younger boy. I didn't really notice the differences in the snout/eyelashes between male and female until a few episodes later (I was more concerned as to why I was even watching the show at that point). ^_^

On a side note WHERE THE HELL DID THE IDEA THAT RAINBOWS = GAY EVEN START, LOL

I'm no expert on Rainbow Dash, but from the limited info we're given about Rainbow's sexuality, she's at the very least bisexual, but not lesbian by any means. Consider this frequently overlooked scene from the well known Sonic Rainboom:

Rainbow Dash having a wild side? Definitely. Does that also translate in the sack as well? From a scene like this its a stretch but potentially. What this does show us though is that Rainbow Dash isn't some lesbo chick some fans hoped she is, at least not from the show's intentions.

She probably is bi because there is so few males to females, there is just not enough... unless polygamy is legit in equestra XD

in all seriousness, RD would love whoever she loves and not give a shit about what others think. :P

So what's the deal with Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon? Two female ponies obsessed over the blank flanks of other female ponies while flaunting their cutie mark flanks. That kind of bullying translated in real world terms, is sexual harassment. I'm cool with it.

I know that lol. I just wonder why rainbow colors?

Because LGTB is a myriad of different people coming together and thus the rainbow, which is a myriad of colors coming together, represents them best in their eyes. I can see the logic behind it.

For starters, not everyone assumed that.

As for whether or not RD is gay, it's possible, but I doubt it.  Horses have been recorded as engaging in homosexual acts; however, the ones that I've heard of are among males that are displaying dominance, sort of like prison.  (I know that lions will do that sometimes, too).

RD's color scheme does not make her gay.  That's like saying President Obama is a thief because he's part black; it's not accurate, and it's not nice.  Also, just because a female is a tomboy, it doesn't mean that she's gay.  Most of the lesbians that I know (aside form the ones that look/dress like men) are very feminine, and EVERY tomboy I've ever known (including two of my sisters) are very straight.

Agree, so much. Look at myself, for example. Back when I was a kid, I was a total tomboy who loved to play football, climb trees and scorned pink, makeup and girly persuits. I also wore a lot of rainbows, cuz get this, I liked rainbows. But I'm straight. There's also plenty of lesbians who dress in elegant clothes and love girly stuff. I personally find people who conform to cookie cutter ideas about lesbians to be offensive and so do my gay friends.

I don't think Rainbow Dash is a lesbian; why should she be, just cuz she apparently seems to be based on a stereotype? What's wrong with simply being a strong female who wants to live her dreams? Applying the stereotyle smacks of the way some men try and squash strong women cuz they feel threatened.
