  1. Without a doubt! :D

    1. Echoing @TheAnimationFanatic above, it revitalized a struggling brand once considered a massive representation of stereotypical femininity and turned into a $650-million brand.
    2. The brony fandom embraced the show, became passionate to a great degree, and helped expand the brand of FIM beyond just the show and a part of many people’s core morality. “Friendship Is Magic” isn’t simply a TV title anymore, but a motto.
    3. The success of FIM completely changed DHX Media’s, now WildBrain’s, fortunes. Once a smaller media company that bought others like DiC, the studio is much bigger in space and staff.
    4. After several empty years, It gave birth to western cartoon’s renaissance. Along with Adventure Time, FIM helped jump start the bolstering creativity of newer successes, and now an array of new high-quality cartoons are part of the lineup.

  2. This is quite tough. If this were about listing the worst in terms of quality, I can answer that. But listing episodes I despise is much different and harder.

    1. The Crystal Empire (how the plot was centered on Twilight having to save thousands of lives as a "test" drives me up a wall. Not the worst episode of the season, but I hate it.)
    2. Princess Spike
    3. Fame & Misfortune
    4. Owl's Well
    5. Newbie Dash
    6. PPOV
    7. Rainbow Falls
    8. Somepony to Watch Over Me
    9. Flutter Brutter
    10. Mare Do Well

Aside from #1, they can be arranged in any order. ;)

Dishonorable mention: EQG1. Not an episode, but I hated its broken storytelling, characterization, and "worldbuilding" a ton from the start.

Some accuse the epilogue of being "worse than fanfiction."

Not accusing you of this, but the “this is a fanfic” complaint I read here and there is monumentally stupid. Why? Because it automatically associates fan fiction with being worthless time to read or write. Why should I listen to an explanation of criticism that stereotypes fan fiction and the creativity of those authors?

As for your OP, the show’s more than worth it! I watched this show since almost the beginning of season 2. From the last three seasons, it was better than it had ever been, and it was good already with the fifth becoming my favorite. If I didn’t enjoy it, why would I even bother?

  4. S1: Owl’s Well. Bridle Gossip’s worse, but OW’s more frustrating, especially from the Spikeabuse and Twilight’s worst appearance.

S2: Mare Do Well. No reasons needed to be given. Dragon Quest is worse, but I hate this one.

S3: The Crystal Empire. Hinging thousands of lives on a contrived “test” and emphasizing the test over their fate is some really screwy morale. (One Bad Apple’s worse.)

S4: Rainbow Fails. Every creative decision fails so epically.

S5: Princess Spike. Worst Spike appearance and worst ending/moment of the season.

S6: Newbie Dash. Dash torture porn at its worst.

S7: Fake & Misfuckton. Worst written episode of the entire series.

S8: Complete Crap Clause. Neighsay closed the school down in part due to the. Mane Eight’s lack of teaching abilities. This episode more than proves him right.

S9: 2, 4, Suuuuucks Great. Not as bad as the rest, but by Celestia, did Dash and a Twi frustrate me!

  5. I didn't read many FIM fics, but one that I loved for a long time is Running From Myself. This fanfic is about Twilight's re-encounter with two former classmates, who had a history of bullying her while she was in school. It's harrowing when reading Twilight's troubles and satisfying when:

    Spoiler
    1. She vents her frustration out on the bullies.
    2. The bullies get secondhand comeuppance.

  6. The Pony I Wanna Be is the saddest song of the entire show. Until this point, Diamond Tiara was portrayed as merely a bully. When the CMCs caught her mom openly abusing her, it was devastating. The song that followed only added to the sorrow.

But it didn’t make me cry. These songs did.

    1. We’ll Make Our Mark (reprise): The moment Dash starts congratulating Scootaloo, the water works flow.
    2. You’re in My Head Like a Catchy Song: The whole episode is an emotional roller coaster, and this song is no exception.
    3. Magic of Friendship Grows: My favorite song of the series, and it gets me emotional. Since I play it so much, I don’t cry from it anymore, but the emotion remains.

  7. The duo of Coconut Cream and Toola-Roola. After stereotyping the hell out of both adults and kids through quarter-dimensional stereotypes, they plug in two characters attempted to represent the primary demographic, despite having as little authentic personality as the “fans” themselves. What makes Coconut and Toola worse, however, is what they represent: they’re tokens. Used to tell young girls with less-than-minimal effort moments after vilifying them all episode long.

Indeed! Could you imagine Pinkie not being the cheerful party pony she has always been? :ooh: I definitely couldn't!

It's a crucial part of her, and by extension, the Elements of Harmony – and likewise for Cheese Sandwich (minus the element part, of course).

Both of these, and to add to both of your points, Pinkie remains that cheerful, altruistic mare we know and love. Yes, she’s a wife and mom now, but it’s clear from the final song and messy hair (which @JingLBabe pointed out) that she’s very preoccupied taking care of and loves playing games with Li’l Cheese.

    Definitely not.

The "Keep Circulating the Tapes" trope implies that the material is hard to acquire legally. I just looked up My Little Pony: The Movie (the original 1986 one), and physical and digital copies are readily available for purchase right now. And that was released 30+ years ago.

In addition to this, there’s digital media to buy the product legally. For instance, many Disney movies not in the Vault are readily available. Last that I recall, FIM’s readily available for legal purchase on iTunes and other mediums.

  10. Out of all the characters, aside from Elmo, Big Bird and Oscar are probably the two most iconic in Sesame Street's 50-year history. Their voices and mannerisms are distinguishable, and Caroll Spinney helped bring them both to life. He, Jim Henson, and Will Lee (Mr. Hooper) are back together again. :(

    @TheAnimationFanatic @SaburoDaimando @Aurora Wolf @Renegade the Unicorn @CloudMistDragon @Ganondorf8 @Tacodidra @PoisonClaw

A few years ago, Spinney did an AMA on Reddit, and he told one of the most beautiful stories I ever read. Please be prepared for some tissues.

Do you forget the fact that she didn't do it alone?

Not at all. Twilight needed her friends, and she’s the leader of the group. Everyone brought the tribes together. Under Twilight’s leadership as princess, she (with Spike and friends) maintains harmony across and beyond Equestria. They trusted her to lead and maintain a crucial international bond; she kept her promise.

Fluttershy was the one who reformed the discord while Twilight kept complaining about him during the other six seasons

Twilight had every right not got trust him for a long, long time.

    1. While he successfully made her friends kneel very quickly, he slowly broke her spirits, temporarily disengaging herself from the Magic of Friendship.
    2. Discord betrayed her friends’ trust, aligning himself with Tirek.
    3. Twice, he played really cruel mind games to “test” her. The first time, he feigned illness to trick her and Cadance and nearly got eaten by a carnivorous plant. In WAD?, he admitted to intentionally setting up the problem, nullifying the moral.
    4. When she felt all the more confident she can lead Equestria, he admitted to setting up Season 9’s whole arc. She felt manipulated by him and terrified that the villains will conquer Equestria.

while Twilight stole a primordial pearl for the survival of seaponies.

She was dead wrong for this, but her actions were completely understandable. All adventure long, her friends became distracted and sometimes didn’t take the terror back home seriously. As princess, she’s responsible for keeping everyone safe. In Seaquestria, Queen Novo rejected Twilight’s pleas for help, resulting in her desperate act. If no one she loves is doing it, then she must do it all herself.

    12 hours ago, Jane said:

    Is that a good character?

One billion percent. She has her strengths, flaws, quirks, and trials. Twilight’s a good character because the whole package makes her one.

  12. 13 hours ago, Jane said:

well, for me, she is still the same boring pony-

Your opinion of her doesn't change the fact that she accomplished a lot in the nine seasons of this show, including transforming the landscape of Equestria and beyond for the better. She earned her right as a princess and then the princess.

  13. On 11/20/2019 at 10:43 AM, Jane said:

how the hell did it go from being a bitter nerd to a pony princess?

‘Cause she worked hard to get where she came from to where she ended up becoming. In the pilot, she didn’t take friendship seriously. Two seasons later, she successfully defended an empire from a terrifying, looming foe and then fixed a magical problem that she accidentally created. Season 9 proved she’s ready to succeed Celestia and Luna as Equestria’s de facto princess.

I could also tell you that I have a problem with The Cutie Map, where Mane Six goes to a village where they were not invited and ruin Starlight's life, and they are immediately seen as heroines.

They absolutely earned their heralded status. Starlight brainwashed an entire group of ponies (some with families), suppressed their talents, and ruled the town authoritatively. Nobody was allowed freedom of expression, disagreement, or creativity. They successfully outed Starlight’s hypocrisy, chased her away, and helped free Our Town from her oppression.

  14. Yeah, I’m a little worried about Pony Life. Everything here (eccentric, flat faces and overtly saccharine layout) screams a want to be like TTG. A one-dimensional style of humor without the balance between silly and straight man. Hopefully, I’m wrong.

    At least it isn’t G5…yet.

Luna and Celestia ruled from Castle of Two Sisters, which was literally in the middle of nowhere, until Celestia banished Luna to the moon.

Even so, Canterlot was presumably the connected city and not a far travel from the castle, so their royal relations came through there. When their original residence was destroyed a few years later, it only made sense for Celestia (and Luna a millennium later) to move there permanently.

Now, about the capital, Ponyville is a town that every time seems to be bigger and inhabited by more ponies, after the final battle, Ponyville is the capital of the union of all creatures, there is the Friendship School , which seems to be a place for other creatures to adapt to living in Equestria. So, to me, it makes no sense that Twilight rules from Canterlot.

Ponyville’s population increased a lot over the years, but it’s still smaller compared to Canterlot. In addition, the princess teaches students in a nearby magical unicorn school system (and some students, like Twilight, live on the castle grounds), has connected landmarks, and runs important ceremonies and meetings with delegates, committees, and relations with diplomats of other countries. Whenever there’s an arrangement with diplomats, they’re usually with Canterlot. Canterlot has been Equestria’s capital for generations, something Ponyville doesn’t have. It takes a world of planning and resources to build a capital, much less switch it.

To begin with, I wouldn't be able to write fanfiction because my brain would constantly be reminding me that the show is over.

Also, the last episode time skip was kind of a punch in the gut for me; it felt as if the writers were kind of stealing away fans' ability to "continue" the story through fanfiction.

I used to do plenty of fan fiction years ago. For me, a show’s finality never determined whether I stuck with it or not. Canon is a tool, not a barrier. Whether you want to follow FIM’s canon to a T or not is completely up to you.

If you’re worried about TLP drying away ideas, don’t be. It’s your story, write what you want.

  17. Twilight: Any of these, all from Owl's Well.

    1. Right after the wind blows her quill away:
      Quote

Oh... This is a job for Spike. If only he were awake...

    2. Dismissing Fluttershy for believing that Spike's worried.
    3. Being completely ignorant of the abusive slapstick at Spike's expense.
    4. Angrily calling him out for hiding his accident from her.
    5. Declaring he's "not the Spike I know and love."

Every single one of these is horrible, and when you put it all together, it paints Twilight in a very horrific light. But my answer has to go with Option 1. Spike was her "baby dragon" and sound asleep. You got plenty of quills, and if not, you could wait till the morning to write the shooting star report. This line implicates that Twilight sees Spike as nothing more than a servant, a line in which Owl's Well showed to great use in the second act.

    ———

Rainbow: Nearly causing Yona to drown. In one of the most OOC moments of the show, RD is so obsessed in winning Teacher of the Month, she'll risk the lives of the students, all of whom she (and AJ) promised to take care of while out of grounds.

    ———

Rarity: Her half of "It's Gonna Work." Why does Rarity's morale from Canterlot Boutique matter so much? Because she's a creator and quality matters so much to her. She strives for folks to be themselves as they wear her creations. Here, she does the exact opposite of what she learned and is proud of it!

    ———

Fluttershy: Threatening to evict Smokey and family. Think about this for a second. Why do Smokey and his fellow racoon family live in Rarity for You in the first place? Because FS wanted them to live comfortably in their home and hired them. They have been instrumental in Rarity's growing business and the communication of her customers. Threatening her animal friends is well beyond out of character for her!

    ———

Pinkie: Making Fluttershy cry (with no remorse) three times and bragging in Big Mac's face after he lost his voice. Her actions to FS were mean-spirited and out of character in their own right, but how she bragged to Big Mac — who was already stressed after losing his voice — was no better. Flashing the award and jumping happily in front of him suggests she's aware of the state he's in. NOT cool!

    ———

AJ: Nearly causing Yona to drown. 'Nuff said, NEXT!

    ———

Mane Six (TV show): Pranking Rainbow Dash in 28PL. Their prank in Mare Do Well is absolutely horrific, but what they did in its ripoff was absolutely atrocious. They were able to gather everyone in Ponyville (including some of Dash's closest friends like Scootaloo!) and agree to pull off an elaborate, realistic prank that Dash believed her friends were sick. If this was a joke, I'm NOT laughing! This "joke" was evil, and Ponyville's supposed to be the good guy! WTF?!

M6 (overall media): The HuMane Five abandoning Sunset Shimmer. So lemme get this straight. Based on a rumor, Sunset's "friends" (all of whom were more than happy to have her part as extended family) abandoned her to cry in the hallway. Even worse, the panel where Sunset wrote on Twilight's makeshift bed suggests she was homeless. So the RM5 knew she didn't have a home, yet chose to let her rot on the street?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
