      Congratulations to them! :yay:

      Ah boo, poor Astros.

Oh well, congrats Nats! First time, right?

      CastletonSnob

There's been a lot of teams winning their first championship in the last few years. The Astros, Eagles, Capitals, Blues, Raptors, and now, the Nationals.

  2. Happy birthday, Captain Whirlpool! :P :yay:

      thanks for the birthday wishes!

  3. Too many good shows wished to have a finale that was equally good and satisfying. Fortunately, FIM is one such show to end it on a high note.

    1. Lambdadelta

      Lambdadelta

FIM has a very satisfying finale episode but not a very satisfying finale season as a whole. I can say the last 3 episode of season 9 leave me a good last impression of the show so it did saved this season. Some story arcs feel unsatisfying and incomplete, thanks to the upcoming season 10 comics which could potentially fill the void the show left behind so I don't have be bitter about it. (the way this season wrap things up, if not for the upcoming comics, I will be a little pissed)

In short, season 9 could be better but at least it's decent enough...:sealed:

      Cash In

I agree. Personally, I found that FiM wrapped up really well.

  4. Double Rainboom’s not a very good “episode,” but between that and Snowdrop, this was better. Sure, DR had a lot of brony and online-culture pandering and was just dumb as a whole, but it didn’t take itself too seriously. Snowdrop’s supposed to be taken seriously, but its tone and structure make the whole narrative feel manipulative, especially when the end revealed Snowdrop passed away while Luna was sealed within the moon.

  5. Happy birthday, Zelly! :yay:

      Xe__or

Zelly? Haven't heard that one  Thanks! :orly:

  6. Tonight Juan Soto became the 4th-youngest player to hit a World Series homer. Only Andruw Jones (Game 1 [first two at-bats], 1996), Miguel Cabrera (Game 4, 2003), and Mickey Mantle (Game 6, 1952) did it younger.

  7. My fuller review/analysis for Last Problem's on the way. Meanwhile, I copied-and-pasted my quickieview from the episode thread, tinkered it a tad more (just to change a word or two), and placed it in my blog.

  8. Back in Ticket Master, AJ claimed she needed the second ticket so she can sell her treats and get enough money for Granny to get a new hip. Either she lied, or Equestria's health care's as corrupt and shitty as America's.

    1. Sparklefan1234

      Sparklefan1234

Granny Smith never did get that hip replacement, did she?... :okiedokieloki:

I was wondering how Big Macintosh bought that shiny new plow. :mlp_wat:

    2. Cash In

      Cash In

So either the Element of Honesty lied or Equestria is awful with health care. Not really giving us good options there....

  9. I already wrote an expanded quickieview in the TLP episode discussion. A few hours ago, I began my full review for the same episode, and I want you to see what I wrote so far. If you want to read it, please click the spoiler tag. :)

    Spoiler

Do you have a tough time saying "goodbye" to anyone? For the last nine years, Friendship Is Magic has been the flagship show for The Hub (later Discovery Family) and a staple for kids and adults alike. As the show grew, the characters grew, and so did their audience. Season 9 capped that growth, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Following the fight for their lives, it felt like an end of an era. The Last Problem marks the beginning of a post-Royal Sister Equestria and the magnificent farewell to an all-time-great, impactful cartoon.

From the opening shot, The Last Problem wasn't going to be like any other episode. The atmosphere was sunny, warm, and more pastel than before. This morning was unlike all other mornings. But more importantly, as Spike's larger shadow swoops over the land, all races were united in Canterlot. Dragons, griffons, hippogriffs/seaponies, ponies (Earth ponies, unicorns, pegasi), changelings, yaks, and kirin are communicating cordially with each other. Why does this matter?

    1. Back in the two-parter, Twilight promoted Spike as Friendship Ambassador and Royal Advisor as a token of gratitude for helping her grow and to show trust in him to help establish harmony far and wide. Her pendent promotes him as her equal and not the "little dragon" that slept more than half the day. Four quick shots established Spike's credentials as a very credible, trustworthy advisor to both Twilight and everyone else. Anyone notice how nobody shares prejudice to anyone? That's in part due of him.
    2. Twilight's prophecy from the final battle comes true:
      Quote

Twilight Sparkle: ENOUGH! Because of you, I almost lost my way! But everycreature here has reminded me of the true power of friendship! There will always be darkness in the world, but there will also always be those who find the light! The Pillars knew this! That's why they created the Elements of Harmony! The Elements showed me and my friends how strong our friendship could be! Together we worked to bring harmony to Equestria! But there will always be more to do! Which is why we teach others about the Magic of Friendship! Others who will continue our mission after we are gone! Now I truly understand! The Elements were just symbols! The real magic has always been right here! And the more who understand how powerful friendship is, the stronger we will all be! Together!

From that day forward, she promised to continue spreading harmony far and wide and teach others about the Magic of Friendship. The end result's a successful utopia of everycreature embracing the Magic of Friendship and becoming better people. Her core promise as Equestrian princess turned into a royal success, making her the perfect successor to Celestia and Luna.

Continuing from Point 2 above, this matters just as much:

    Quote

Future Gallus: Your Majesty, she's here.

Future Twilight Sparkle: Send her in, Gallus.

    vlcsnap-2019-10-12-19h54m51s011.jpg

Ponies ruled Equestria for generations, but Twilight took it one step further, promoting Gallus the Griffon as her Royal Guard captain. Those two lines and the way they spoke show trust and loyalty for each other. He was no token griffon, but someone she can count on to guard Canterlot Castle, its inhabitants, the rest of the capital, and beyond. He not only embraced the Magic of Friendship, but embodies it while being his own person.

  10. This year's World Series between Washington and Houston marks just the second time where both participants facing each other are expansion franchises. The other time happened only four years ago: Mets vs. Royals, the latter winning in five.

  11. Between 1921 and 2009, the Yankees went to the World Series at least once every decade. With last night's elimination from the ALCS, this is their first decade without a pennant since the 1910s.

  12. Because of the leaks, the full version of "Invisible" was posted on YouTube from a few accounts…and…

Holy shit, the last line is super dark! DX

I didn't think about it like that when I first heard it... but yeah, I have to agree. :sunny:

I'm glad the full version is finally out, though – it's baffling to me that Hasbro hasn't bothered to release all the songs!

Also, the song "So Much More to Me"...

      Spoiler

has two alternative versions. One of them is slightly different from the final version (I think the guitar part in the chorus was removed), but the demo has a completely different melody from what they ended up using. The final version is one of my favorite MLP songs (possibly even number one?), but the demo version also sounds so good I wish they had used it too...

  14. Happy birthday, Justin! :D

  15. The show slowly crept the fact in that Scootaloo's disabled and can't fly. Washouts virtually confirmed, and both Growing Up and TLP sealed it.

    1. Splashee

      Splashee

Yes. So where did the idea that she was gonna be disabled come from? Lauren Faust?
Didn't Lauren Faust decide that Applejack's parents were dead? And the show kept that true all the way till the end as well.

    2. Tacodidra

      Tacodidra

While I know there were many who wanted to see Scootaloo fly, I'm glad the show crew handled it this way. The opposite would have diminished the emotional effect of episodes like "Flight to the Finish". I find Scootaloo coming to terms with her disability and living a happy life in spite of it a much more satisfying conclusion to her story (especially relating it to real-life disabilities, many of which don't just go away).

  16. The play that ended the best baseball game of 2019 so far!

Astros vs. Nationals! Shall be fun! :yay:

Saying it now: Astros in 4.

  17. Didn’t talk about this in my Daring Doubt review because what I read was leaked out, but there’s a difference in the last scene between the locked script and the aired episode. In the official airing, the fate of Daring Do’s popularity was left ambiguous, while the script had Ahuizotl trash-read behind Daring’s back akin to Caballeron in his own book.

The official airing works much more. Ahuizotl made them promise to not scour the temples in Tenochtitlan Basin, which they agreed. Had they kept the ending as is, it suggests that he wasn’t being truthful and would do anything to further ruin her rep. In addition, the locked script makes Daring Do’s series cap on a bitter, downer moment.

    1. Tacodidra

      Tacodidra

I agree. :) This is the first I hear of the original ending, but like most of the changes I've read about lately (sadly not all of them, though), it was definitely an improvement.

    2. Patty Thundersnow

      Patty Thundersnow

The ending that they did end with was vastly better than the previous. Glad they ended it like that rather than having Ahuizotl trash her.

  19. @Kiryu-Chan has been posting his own summaries and reactions of original leaked premises of Dash episodes (many of which were much better than the final product), I'll do the same for the original premise for Keep Calm & Flutter On:

    Spoiler

Like the original, Celestia brings the statue of Discord, but only to Fluttershy and Dash as the others aren't there. Rather than simply saying that Celestia would like to have Discord's powers used for good, she explains that she forgives Discord and believes that Fluttershy is the best pony to help him reform. In case he does anything evil, Celestia created a necklace made out of broken shards of the Elements of Harmony, which will cause him to wake up when it's donned on his statue. When he does something bad, he gets zapped. Only when he's committed to being a good guy will the necklace come off.

Not long after, Discord wakes up from his stone slumber, and right away, he's up to his usual chaotic tricks. Even though he's intentionally driving others batty, the necklace mostly doesn't zap him. But FS doesn't give up on him. During the tea party, he plays music loud and softly to play with them, ruining it. He explains that he's basically a chaotic guy and crashes on the couch because. Fluttershy had enough of his attitude and gave him the stare. Cue the next morning, our heroes discover he's no longer wearing the necklace, initially assuming the worst, only to find out that's not the case.

Cue a flashback. The stare contest between FS and Discord lasted all night through the morning, when he gives up. Soon, he discovers that beavers were trying to competitively build their own dams, which risked overflowing a nearby creek. FS convinced them to stop; Discord admitted it felt good being helpful. The necklace fell off. And he's allowed to crash on the couch anytime.

Needless to say, this episode is really, really crammed like the original. The fact that Discord's controlled until the necklace falls off really opens up several implications, such as slavery, "friendship = control," and so forth. In the final, Discord discovered his feelings and like for friendship when he realized he was manipulating her and regretted it, a much more satisfying conclusion over this. However, that infamous line from the actual episode suggests her friendship with Discord is a means to control, too, so it isn't any better.

Also, despite supposedly being a judgment of good and evil, the necklace is extremely incompetent; he's intentionally doing many bad things to get under everyone's skins, but the necklace lets him get away with it. However, everyone puts their trust and support for FS, and Twi doesn't try to find a spell to force Discord to reform. And I'm not sure about how the necklace is made up of broken pieces of the Elements itself, though I haven't read the other premises to see if that's true to that continuity at the time.

Honestly, the original premise and final are equal, but if I have to choose which is better, I have to go with the final by a small margin.

    1. Miss

      Miss

Hmmm interesting, I'm with you here, but I will also add that the original premise not including Twilight and the others is kind of bad, because someone like Discord who is powerful af and the mane 6 had to battle him, should definitely have been presented to all of them and not just Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.

Also I think the fact that Twilight and the others don't trust Discord and want to find a spell fits in better considering he is a "big bad." It shows this independent thought that even though Celestia thinks one way, everypony else can still decide to do something else. They still allow Fluttershy to do what she thinks is right in the end too. Considering the episodes afterwards (kind of) show how everypony still feels meh about him, but are somewhat tolerating him, I think it fits even more as he later does end up betraying them.

So yeah, final cut is better for me as well, but by a medium margin, as opposed to a small one XD

That would've been an interesting episode, had this version been the one released. Though it does have its issues.

  22. When you think about how woeful the Nats were this season, it's shocking that they not only came back to make it to .500, but make the playoffs, much less the World Series. Davey Martinez (a fantastic bench coach under Joe Maddon) was close to losing his job. The clubhouse sounded awful.

Let's take a look at the history they made with this run.

    1. Only the seventh team to win a best-of-7 when not trailing (last the 2015 Mets over Cubs)
    2. Now one of four teams in Fall Classic after being 12 or more games under .500 (19-31 for them, only the Marlins were worse in the NL). The other three:
      1. 2005 Astros (16-31)
      2. 1973 Mets (53-66)
      3. 1914 Boston Braves (12-28)
    3. Bullpen once had a 7.02 ERA. Since then, they posted a 5.07 ERA, still awful, but a major improvement.
    4. Gerardo Parra joined the club, transformed the culture, and they now have a world of fun. (Doo-do-doo-do-doo Baby Shark. :P )
    5. After the Nats seemingly lost the NL East, the team was the underdog after being the favorites for the last several seasons. This team plays loose and like they have nothing to lose.
    6. They're only the second team to make the World Series after never leading the division at any point, the 2003 Marlins the other.
    7. Since the second Wild Card was added, they only the third WC team to win the pennant (the Giants and Royals faced each other five years ago).
    8. With their backs against the door, they come up with clutch play after clutch play.
      1. Nats down 3-0 after Scherzer struggles through 5 innings? Strasburg throws 3 shutout innings.
      2. With four outs left in their season, the Nats rally, and Juan Soto rips a three-run single that drove their fans crazy. :D
      3. Nats survive the top of the 9th, advancing for the first time since moving to Washington.
      4. Massive underdogs against the Dodgers, losing Games 1 and 3, and then down to their last six outs with Kershaw on the mound? No biggie. Just a homer here, a homer there to tie it, and then some journeyman named Howie Kendrick with the biggest hit in franchise history!
      5. Oh, yeah, and the Nats win a series!
      6. Against the Cards and seemingly exhausted? Pressure? Nah! Just throw almost fifteen no-hit innings in St. Louis and then come within one win from their first Fall Classic.
      7. Bases loaded, two out, and Matt Carpenter (who has a career BA of around .450 with the bags packed). Power against power, Carpenter grounded out to Dozier, and then an uneventful ninth!

I'm really happy for this squad! :yay:

    1. Patty Thundersnow

      Patty Thundersnow

As a Cards fan, this series just about made me tear my hair out because of all the strikeouts. It was disgusting to watch because the Cards are usually more disciplined than that. Still, the Nats have no chance against either team in the AL. The Nats might have Rendon, but the Astros have Bregman, Springer, Gurriel, and Altuve. Yankees have LeMahieu, Urshela, Judge, Stanton, and several others. As good as the Nats pitching is, they can't purely ride it forever.

  23. *lurklurklurk* Happy birthday! :D
