How did you first react to this scene?
Magic Man replied to Wardaddy's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
It's easy to think "Oh, Poor Twilight, all the others HISS HISS!" But that's because people get emotional and subjective when they watch it. People forget that it only happened because Twilight handled the situation in the WORST. WAY. POSSIBLE! You can't just go accusing a member of the Royal family without absolutely no evidence and as viciously as you can. It's not like "I have reason to believe you're hiding someone and I want some answers," No, it was basically, "EVIL, EVIL, EVIL!!!" at the top of her lungs like some spoiled brat. Wouldn't YOU have been a little peeved if you were in SA's position? Seriously, people don't cut the guy, or the others any slack when it comes to this scene.- 71 replies

An episode based off famous films.
Magic Man replied to Magic Man's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Yeah, but when it comes to large numbers moving in, even races ponies usually get along with can stir up ill feelings of xenophobia and nativism against pretty much anyone who looks different, regardless if they've been there a long time or even born there. But of course in the end, it doesn't matter whose side they are on, the end message of course is that such nativism and xenophobia is wrong, a message we're in need of nowadays. I get your point about the Alicorn amulet, but then hasn't almost EVERYONE done Lord of the Rings by now. Don't get me wrong, if they decided to do it, I'll probably enjoy it, I just don't know what anything new MLP can add to it that hasn't already been parodied and spoofed. -
An episode based off famous films.
Magic Man replied to Magic Man's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
That is a good point, though the issue of Gangs of New York was neccessarily about the land itself, but rather inter ethnic conflict and relations and how ethnic groups divide themselves into gangs. The Buffallo episode was primarily about land, not species, whilst here, the pony-Changeling thing would be primarily about species. I could well see the ponies tackling this with new immigrant waves. -
I just figured, some episodes in cartoons serve as homages to famous films. Hell, LPS has entire imagination scenes that are call outs to films. With MLP, it would certainly be great for an episode to be based on a famous film. For example, and this is a far fetched one I admit, an episode based on Gangs of New York, or rather "Gangs of Manehattan/Ponyville", focusing on clashes between the Ponies and immigrant species, ie Changeling, Dogs, Zebras, Griffins, etc. "Is this it, Weevil, the Queen's new army? A few crusty beetles and a hoof full of rag tag moths?" "Now, now, Pinkamena, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of filly foolers, so warriors is what I brought." (various Changeling and various species gangs proceed to appear) “At my challenge, by the ancient laws of combat, we are met at this chosen ground, to settle for good and all who holds sway over this town: us pony natives, born right-wise to this fine land of Equestria, or the foreign hordes defiling it.” “By the ancient laws of combat, I accept the challenge of the self-entitled natives. They plague our peoples at every turn, but from this day out, they shall plague us no more. For let it be known, that the hoof that tries to strike us from this land shall be swiftly cut down.” It may just be me, but I just really like this film. Though heaven help Pinkie Pie, or "Pinkie the Baker" when Weevil's son witnesses his murder at her hooves. I'd like to know if you also like idea or not and what other film homage ideas you guys may have.

EQD Discussion: Changelings Join Equestrian Society
Magic Man replied to Magic Man's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I would like to see the writers tackle it in the way of discussing the issue of immigration and multiculturalism. To me their situation is comparible to groups world wide. Ponies - Russians. Changelings - Chechens and other peoples of the Caucasus. Ponies - American Nativists, the Know Nothing movement. Changelings - Irish, German (Catholic) immigrants to America. If you got others, please share. -
This is a discussion going on over at EQD, but screw it, I'm bringing it here. http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/04/discussion-changelings-join-equestrian.html#idc-container What if changelings decided to simply "join" equestrian society instead of forcefully feed upon it? I'm sure there are plenty of lonely mares and colts out there who wouldn't mind sharing some love with something that could literally be anything. What kind of moral implications would this bring up I wonder? Are changelings picky about who they absorb "love" from? If they have a hivemind society does even allow anything other than feeding between two creatures? Analyze changelings in the comments! Here's my take: To me, it IS possible, given the ideals of the show. But even for a positive, idealistic show like this, there WILL be problems when it comes to Changeling immigrants or the people as a whole species being engulfed into Equestria. The way I see it, the big issue is Cultural divisions. These are two very different ethnic groups with strikingly different values, norms and beliefs. The Changelings to the ponies would be like Asian or Middle Eastern immigrants in the West at best or what the Chechens are to the Russians at worst. There will be several issues that need to be resolved: *Can Chrysalis and Equestria's differences ever be resolved and consoled? Who knows, but it's unlikely? And if the Changelings do become fully part of Equestria, would they need to appoint a new and pro-Equestrian Changeling leader? *Feeding off love? Could the beams emitting by the Crystal Empire help solve it? Or would ponies have to legally donate love for the Changeling citizens? *Could Changelings live anywhere in Equestria or would they have to live at first in effective 'ghettos'? And if they can, it could to ethnic pockets and segregation. *Would the educational and service system be overwhelmed? *Would ponies and Changelings be allowed to marry? *How much could the Changeling integrate whilst keeping their own values and identity? And how much would Equestria be willing to give to accommodate them? I imagine Changelings being more socially conservative than Equestrians, in terms of roles of males and females, they have more children, they have different values on education, stronger dedication to family (so I guess the Apples will have some middle ground with them), their religiosity and mysticism, their loyalty to Celestia and Luna or their own, etc. I would adore MLP to tackle in its own way a subject that is VERY current, i.e. Immigration and multiculturalism. I just want to start off by making one thing clear. When a character is "redeemed" that does not mean s/he goes from being absolutely good to absolutely evil. I think we tend to see it in a really black-and-white view of the situation of redemption episode. An antagonistic character can be redeemed whilst keeping true to their basic character, Discord and Trixie were testaments to that. With Chrysalis, I can understand there is much more of a case against the idea of her having a redemption episode, but my biggest focus here isn't just on the character (though that IS important) but on the WRITING and EXECUTION. I mean, c'mon, if someone can take My Little Pony and make a good show out of that, they can make a redemption episode for someone like Chrysalis. Like with Discord's playful and fun-loving nature that was used as the basis of him not being irredeemable, it's Chrysalis motives that just about save her from me seeing her as irredeemable, only really because the reason behind those motives are pretty vague (is she doing what is best for her people, or just greedy and wants to get a power boost). If the episode was written REALLY WELL, then I can see it working as Chrysalis deciding to no longer antagonize the ponies leave them be and perhaps develop a newfound respect for them, the latter vice-versa. That way the Changeling threat is neutralized but they're not friends either, which to me, would be going a step too far, considering her personality. She doesn't have to pure as the driven snow, she just doesn't have to be an active threat to Equestria anymore, that would be enough and really, the only way it can work whilst simultaneously keeping the characters in-character.

I think what a lot of us forget is that a redemption episode does NOT necessarily mean a villain is going from absolute evil to being good, it could easily be the villain no longer trying to kill the heroes and sometimes be on their side if the situation calls for it. I mean, with Discord, they pulled it off pretty well, because he has not become a goody two-shoes, he remains his trickster, underhanded personality, he's just going to be working alongside the ponies rather than against them now. Of course, they are limits to this. For me, it's mostly down to the writing, but the actual character in question is important. So what other villains are there that could or not be redeemed even in the loosest sense? Let's see, there's Chrysalis and Sombra I can think of right now. Chrysalis: She would have to be as far as I could possibly go, and even then, I don't think it could be as much as Discord. With Chrysalis, it's her motives that just about save her from me seeing her as irredeemable, only really because the reason behind those motives are pretty vague (is she doing what is best for her people, or just greedy and wants to get a power boost). If the episode was done REALLY WELL, then yes, it could work. I can see it working as Chrysalis deciding to no longer antagonize the ponies leave them be and perhaps develop a newfound respect for them. That way the Changeling threat is neutralized but they're not friends either. Changelings as a whole: As I do not believe in ALways Chaotic Evil, I do not believe all Changelings are evil and thus in need of a redemption story. An episode featuring good or at least neutral Changeling would be fine with me. Sombra: Sombra will simply have to be one too far for me, because really, he's actually made out to be less than a fleshed out character than an embodiment of evil for the MLP universe. He's their Sauron and the Liche.

If King Sombra Returns should he be redeemed?
Magic Man replied to 100 beasts kaidou's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Sorry, but I think I will have to draw the line at King Sombra. Discord? Yeah they made that work. Queen Chrysalis? Eh, maybe, but they would have to really do it well and it would probably have to be my limit. King Sombra? Sorry, this unicorn is the MLP version of Sauron and the Lich. He is basically the pony boogeyman. -
No, I'm trying to keep the focus of the topic onto what it's about as some people here seem to be choosing to completely skip the written out requirements for their suggestions. This particular topic is tailored to voice actors and guest stars who within the realm of the possible genuinely could appear on the show. Voice actors like Grey De Lisle, Dee Bradley Baker, yeah, that could maybe happen. But Steve Carrel, David Tennant, Lady Gaga, yeah the prospect sounds fantastic, but they're almost never gonna happen. If one of them suggested they are interested in voicing for the show in the past, then sure maybe, but as is, I'm gonna have to chalk them up as a big no.
-
Okay, you obviously did not even bother to read the requirements for this thread, with perhaps Weird Al being the only candidate within the realms of possibility. Whilst having Lauren on the show guest voicing would be great, has she had any previous voice work? I don't know personally, but if she has, then maybe, but if not, then I doubt it.
-
I recognize a similar topic has already been posted here, and what it's about is all in the title, but the significant difference I want to emphasize here is that the actor who you want to appear as a guest star has to be someone who could REALISTICALLY and FEASIBLY BE a guest star on the show. Some of the suggestions on the other topic range from realistic to simply impossible; Morgan Freeman has been brought up as a guest star more times than I can count, and someone even suggested former President Bill Clinton! No, this has got to be someone who the studio and writers could seriously get to lend their voice to an episode. Say, for example, Tom Kenny, a veteran voice actor who has voiced many comedic and villiain characters, including Spongebob and the Ice King to name two. Now if someone said he was going to appear as a guest character or even a recurring character, say like a Changeling or better yet, Chrysalis' Brother, Prince Weevil, I could buy that and not think it's someone trolling me. Or say Tim Curry playing an over-the-top big bad, or John DiMaggio as a Diamond Dog, or Charlie Adler as, well... whatever character, I'll take it, the guy's hilarious. But the thing is, these guys are well-known voice actors with roles in previous or current shows that would make FiM a possible route for them. I mean, hell, even George Takei, given that he's been doing some voice over work as of late would make him a much more believable candidate than say, Freeman, Lady Gaga or Daniel Radcliffe. Bottom line, if you have an idea for a guest star or voice for a recurring character, please do share, but just be realistic. Also, if you could share what kind of character they could voice, that'd be cool too.

Who do you Want to Guest Star on MLP?
Magic Man replied to Tom The Diamond's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Okay, I'm starting to a new thread on this, but a specific detail is going to be on people who could realistically Actually appear as guest roles, because some of these are getting ridiculous. But as for me? Tom Kenny (as a Changeling) Chris Adler (as whatever, he could make it work for any species) John DiMaggio (as a Diamond Dog) George Takei (as a Changeling) -
Now hold on, that is not the argument I'm making here at all. I did not say they were justified, nor was I trying to make them out to be misunderstood or tormented. Trust me, I dislike those attempts to do that just as much as you do. I am not even asking for a redemption episode. My argument was not that every Changeling is in need of a redemption story, but rather that not all Changelings in the world are uniformly bad, due to what we've seen of them so far. Discord is one person, when we're talking about an entire species here, and yes, whilst Chrysalis and her army certainly qualify as being bad, it shouldn't be applied to the entire species, because "Always Chaotic Evil" simply shouldn't have a place in the universe of My Little Pony for the reasons I detailed in my argument.
-
You make some very good points here and I can definitely agree about the need for it. It's just that for me, I see the Changelings as needing it more because of how they have so far been set up as being actually Evil, whilst the dragons are more set up as being savage, brutish and greedy. I mean, there is a distinctive difference between the two species in this regard. But yes, absolutely, I would like to see more good dragons outside of Spike.

Griffon Kingdom Inspiration Ideas
Magic Man replied to TyHopkinson's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Well, okay, I can definitely see your point and if they do indeed turn out to be nomads, I'd imagine them definitely something akin to the Huns. And even so, if they do have a homeland, it doesn't HAVE to be modeled on a culture 100% accurate, but like Equestria, it could be a pix and mix and with it's own styles. It doesn't have to be exactly word-for-word like Imperial Japan, but just draw a lot of inspiration from old Japanese culture. It's just with the Changelings, I definitely like to think of them having a more East Asian culture, with nations like Japan and Korea as prime sources, in contrast to the Western culture of Equestria. But hell, if we're talking exactly like a real culture, I guess the closest we'd get is what, North Korea? Old Imperial China or current Communist China? I mean, what other real life nations could they be compared to? -

Magic Man replied to TyHopkinson's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
You see the Changeling Empire as feudal Japan too? Well, I guess great minds think alike. As for the Griffins, I'm thinking Imperial Germany, you know, the Kaiser and all that. Edit: Oh, sorry, I forgot the difference between feudal Japan and IMPERIAL Japan. The latter is what I base the Changelings off of. Sorry. -
