@@Crispy, @@Twiliscael, @@Champion RD92, HEY GUYS WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS. Seeing that a lot of our well discussed genres are, well, alien to newcomers, how about we make a list of albums that can help people get into the discussion? 

 

Considering I'm a complete noob myself, I think I would benefit from a list of albums that I could check out or something.

 

I'll also contribute what I can.

I'd say some good bands to start with for each genre would be these:

For deathcore: The Discovery by Born of Osiris.

For grindcore: Prowler in the Yard by Pig Destroyer and Dirge by Wormrot because it's like, what, 15 minutes long

For proggy weird stuff: Periphery, both 1 and 2. Long-ass albums, but totally worth it. You can skip the elctronica parts at the end of every song on Periphery II.

For just metal: City by Strapping Young Lad

For thrash: Reign in Blood by Slayer (Lich King Lich King Lich King Lich King)

For more weird stuff: Devin Townsend, preferably Ziltoid the Omniscient.

I don't listen to a lot of doom or sludge. I really enjoyed Isole's latest album "Born From Shadows". Cult of Luna? Not sure how well known those are, just a shot.

I think it's safe to say that Psycroptic exceeded everyone's expectations with their success. Hell, I've got a friend who saw them in Germany before he saw them in their home town xD

Well here's a list of metal-ish bands I like:

Pantera made some good albums in the 90's. You might want to check them out since you've got some older stuff on there. Lamb of God for some Groove Metal/Metalcore, but honestly, the core in it isn't all that noticeable. If you like the Groove-ness of LoG, you could try to move onto Gojira, which is Prog Death/Groove Metal. I think you mentioned you didn't like Death and Black metal though, so I guess you can disregard that for now.

 

If you like clean vocals, I think power metal would be nice. Iced Earth (not their older stuff, that's pretty hard), Brainstorm, or Labyrinth. Blind Guardian too, but Hansi Kursch's vocals are a bit harsh.

 

It's better if you check out a bit from every genre though. I mean, I haven't been around in metal long enough to really enjoy Black Metal or Grindcore, but I still check out some stuff from time to time. Some things that I didn't like, I find myself liking now.

Dude, nice. I mean, people don't like The Acacia Strain because it's deathcore and stuff, and that's understandable. Though for me, I find it to be the perfect rage-music. I have Wormwood. Favourite track from it would probably be Ramirez, short and to the point. I don't even like chug-riffs, but the one at the end of The Hills Have Eyes really gets to me.

Honestly, I hardly even give subgenres of music much thought. If I like it, I'll listen to it. (Protip: There's close to zero metal I don't enjoy to some extent).

 

If you like Acacia Strain, some other deathcore bands I like are Carnifex, The Red Chord (Thanks to Crispy for these guys), Veil of the Maya, Born of Osiris, and Aegeaon. I personally don't take much of a liking towards Whitechapel.

I feel like I don't really contribute anything to this thread. You guys don't seem to be fans of most of what I post. Plus there's the fact that I'm a complete noob, and I don't even know most of what you guys post :/

 

You say that you feel like you don't contribute, but in actuality, you do!  It's refreshing to see music from all areas of the vast metal spectrum.  Areas that we seldom see covered here in this glorious thread.  Seriously, don't stop posting bro.  Everyone's taste (especially with metal) is going to be different which I respect; I can't imagine every to enjoy everything they find here, but the fact that we're sharing and discussing this music with each other is ultimately beneficial in the long run.  

 

Don't get discouraged!  Keep posting what you like.

I squee'd just a bit. I have Sedition, and I love it. The cover art is also so pretty.

 

Fleshgod Apocalypse is good too. In fact, that's how I found out about that album in the first place! Have you heard their latest (not really new) album, Agony? I like it better than their other stuff, more symphonic and stuffs.
