Perhaps make it look like rarity is standing in the snow a bit? wouldn't that happen in a scenario like that?

So you're telling us that all of that just came from your brain? 

 

I don't usually commentate on art, but I love the color palette here. It has enough variation to be interesting, but is overall made up of light cool tones. I like it!

 

If I were to give criticism, the lighting around the lamp looks a little too much like a diffused circle rather than a natural light source. You seem to be trying for the trees to recede a bit into the distance, so the fact that the lamp effects them evenly might be what is causing the issue.

 

Hmm, what else is here? Well, the composition's very pleasant, especially considering the center focus. Center focus on its own can be problematic (speaking as an amateur photographer here), but you balanced it out with snow on the left leading the eye around, so it's good.

not exactly.reference for me is to get the likeness of a character right.i obviously dont want it to look like background pony nr. 345,so i did look at reference regarding raritys hair.i forgot that likeness lies in the eyes of a character too,thankfully it didnt turn out super crappy in this case.

 

thank you for pointing out the lamp problem.

although im not too sure on how much the light would actually affect the trees.

however,i see your point of the light source looking unnatural

Think of a cat in front of an old grandfather clock.

 

 

They'll watch the pendelum swish back and forth and back and forth. That's what you want your audience to do. You want them to be engaged when they're looking at your picture. You don't want them to be a bored cat in front of a stopped clock.

 

The reason why composition tutorials will caution against putting things dead center and recommend the rule of thirds is because the latter naturally creates points for the eye to follow. However, those are just rules of thumb; nice, quick and dirty guidelines to help an artist pay more attention to how they're composing something. I'm pretty sure most of my uses of that "rule" are unconscious!

 

I divided your picture up as per rule of thirds below, and also drew the path my eyes took when I was looking at it.

Look at all that! The composition is neither chaotic nor boring. I'm pretty much moving in a clockwise pattern with the odd exception (not chaotic), but you also have me swooping down to Rarity instead of just making a total ellipse (not boring).

 

On a more artistic note, I'm getting a regal air from the impression of height with these big arcs, perfect for our glamour queen. 

 

You have nothing to fix in this case, but if you want to have a more thorough grasp of why certain compositions work, I recommend pulling up some of your favorite pictures and tracing arrows over the path your eyes take you.

 

Warning: Bad vacation snapshots of others may be ruined by this exercise.

thanks for again giving me advice

i will certainly look more into composition!

the painting im working on atm is kinda centered too, but thankfully i can still fix that now
