Have you ever watched any of the previous generations of MLP?

I've seen the original G1 movie. You can probably find it on YouTube.

It's kind of cool because it has Tirek as the villain, and he's pretty hardcore as far as being evil goes. Everything else about it was pretty forgettable.

I've watched at least 1 episode from all of the generations.

G1: It is awesome. I grew up on G1, and I loved it. I still love it. G1 has a lot of dark themes as well as great episodes. The best villains are from G1. Tirek and Grogar especially.

G2: I only watched 1 episode. I gave up. It was just not the kind of show that interests me.

G3: I watched the pilot episode and quit for some time. Then I realized that pilot episodes aren't usually good and went to watch another episode. I still didn't like it.

G4: I love G4. I'm sure you are familiar with G4.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't seen any full episodes of MLP from past generations. But I have seen toy commercials of past generations when I was younger.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

I've seen a few episodes from past generations. I actually rather enjoy G3 because of how cute and innocent it is while G1 is alright. The past generations aren't really that bad and it'd be nice if bronies would stop going "ew ew gross g3/g1" every time someone brings it up.

Don't get me wrong, G4 is my favorite but it wouldn't hurt to stop trash-talking the older generations.

After becoming a fan of Gen 4, I decided to watch at least one episode of each previous generation. None of them were bad. Gen 1 was pretty cool, Gen 2 was absolutely adorable and hilarious, Gen 3 was better than expected. I wish bronies would stop bashing other generations. Respect your show's elders!

I've never watched an episode of G1 or G3 but I don't even want to watch one, I know that I wouldn't like it.

I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this statement and the kind of stuff I was saying two days ago when I was bronyphobic (has that phrase been coined yet?). I have heard enough about G3 being dreadful that I wouldn't doubt it for a second, but after realizing how wrong I was about G4 and the brony culture, I try not to get into the mindset of "I know that I wouldn't like it." I spent a long time saying that, and now... well, I'm not quite a brony yet, as I've only seen three episodes, but you could call me a casual fan for now. :)

I've watched all previous generations of MLP, including the live action shows.

G1 was a fairly typical 80's fantasy cartoon series. If you're not familiar with 80's cartoons, it will be a bit of culture shock to try to watch those.

G1.5 was amusing, geared to a slightly younger audience. Using a modern setting, with the ponies as human substitutes in an effort to have them 'explain' current issues in terms the younger audience would understand.

G3 was an attempt to return to G1's fantasy, but wasn't a 'series' as such, as all the cartoons were sold as companion parts to toy sets. As such each episode was themed in such a way to introduce a new toy line, or something similar.

G3.5 was... weird. Hasbro went all experimental. Playing around with a variety of art styles, reconfiguring the toy line, new animation technology. Without 3.5, they wouldn't have been willing to do FiM, but it was still rather messy and confusing.

To be honest the MLP: FiM live action show was possibly the worst officially produced MLP thing ever. No matter how bad you think the prior generations were, this thing was mindbendingly bad.

En masse? No. The only part of G1 I ever watched was the "Return of Tambelon" block which I found to be quite excellent. The songs kinda felt...weird and maybe a little forced, but overall it was enjoyable.

G1.5...well, I have no wish to watch that as of yet. That might be because of Tommy Oliver's review of some episodes, BUT overall...not interested.

G3...ehhh, never really saw it, but I don't have the revulsion for that one. I might give it a shot.

G3.5, I saw some, I cringed, period.

I don't mean to diss some of the earlier shows, but G1 aside, I haven't seem much that interested me outside of G4.

I have seen at least one episode from each gen.

G1: Escape from Catrina.  Saw this at this years Bronycon as part of a rifftracks style panel involving (I believe) Paleo, SaberSpark, ACRacebest, JHaller, BVids & Tommy Oliver. The action bored me and the Deus Ex Machina, beta EoH, rainbow locket was meh, and the ponies seemed a bit too kiddish for me. But the relationships between Megan & The Ponies as well as villain Catrina & her henchman Rep were all well done.

G2: Part 2 of Bronycon rifftracks. Interesting story involving a lost princess, a prophecy and what amounts to a conjob. A bit of logic was lost here, but it was amusing.

G3.5: (going to save the best for last). I have only seen one mini-episode out of the whole core 7 series, (Part 3 of rifftracks) which appears to be the point where G3.5 started to decline. Suffice to say it was too short and filled with a little too much nonsense to be palpable to me. The G3.5 program that I have seen and liked was Twinkle Wish Adventure, and the series appeared to slowly improve.

But then came the Once Upon A Time shorts (AKA Newborn Cuties) and everything went to s##t.

G3: Out of the prior gens, this is the one I have the most viewership & respect for. I own two on vhs (A Charming Birthday, Dancing in the Clouds) two dvds (A Very Minty Christmas, Positively Pink) saw the G3/3.5 marathon on the hub (Princess Promenade, Runaway Rainbow & Twinklewish Adventure) and watched Friends Aren't Far Away on Netflix. Well animated, decently voiced (by some VA's you might recognize), nice music score, aesthetically pleasing overall.  G3 for me is just a fun watch.

I've pretty much done minor reviews already for the G3 fanclub, which you can see here.   (http://mlpforums.com/topic/102781-g3-fan-club/page-4  (please join!))

I'm actually thinking of writing a series of stories involving the G3/3.5 cast as a sort of re-imagining, to add depth and additional detail to their characters, their interactions, the stories and conflicts, as there was a more distinctive cast in G3 than most Bronies give credit for and a lot of untapped potential involving the ponies of G3. Perhaps I may even draw comics for them.

Until that day, have some pics of my favorite G3 pony

I have watched all Gens ( except G4 ) completely including the Video Games from G1 - 3.

G1 : The first 2 Mini Movies or OVA's were really good and the reason why i became such a fan of My Little Pony,The Ponys was just cute and the Storys very interesting and surprisingly Dark  I mean, with the Heart of Darkness..which was a real heart...in a bag which pulsed...

The 2 Real Movies were even better. There was so much stuff going on,it wasnt boring for one second, and i was so happy after the villians got finally kicked away!

The Series had also many Episodes that i enjoyed, cool Villians, catchy Music ( LET THE BELL OF FREEDOM RING!! ) and was very cute.

G1.5 : My alltime Favorit, just perfect Animation and the title picture of the Sweethearts Birthday Dvd got me interested into My Little Pony because it was that what i have searched for, a truth Furry series.Realistic Episodes, the Ponys could walk on 4 and 2 legs and i just loved the entire series.

G2 : A very interesting Game.Actually the Animation Style from G2 Ponys actually looked even more than Horses and was really well made. The game itself was a little bit similar to the Sims.I liked it.

G3 and G3.5 : Some of the Movies was a little bit Boring but some of them were full of Feelings, my two Favorite Movies are Twinkle Wish Adventure ( G 3.5 Scootaloo FTW! ) and Runaway Rainbow, in which i almost cried, good emotions and good music.

G4 : Good Action, good Story and good Animation. But personally the Ponys overreact here more than in any other Gen.And i personally dont like the Humor that much, but after all, some of the Episodes are better then the G1 ones, so G4 is my second favorite series.

For G1, I've seen all of the original cartoon and movies, and several episodes of Tales. For G3, I watched it up until it changed and the 'episodes' turned into shorts based off of one of the 'main' characters. I haven't seen any of G3.5.

I'm very glad I was able to remove myself enough from this fandom to get myself out of the horrible mindsets around here that all of the early generations were trash. Opinions have slowly turned positive toward G1 around here, I see, and that's great. But G3 isn't trash, either.

This I how I rank the Generations:

1. G4, (including EG)

2. G1, (the original movies and episodes)

3. A shit load crap, aka G3, G3.5, G2, but they are pretty funny because there so bad.

Yes I have. I don't know what gen they were but I was a kid in the 90's and I had a younger sister and I know I didn't like it then.

A couple months back the Hub ran a marathon of all the FIM episodes along with some of the movies from the older gens. I watched a few minutes of each movie and was like,  "I think I've seen enough here" . :okiedokielokie:

The only amusing part was hearing Tabitha, Andrea, and Brian Drummond (Mr. Cake in FIM - Spike in one of the old movies).

Overall I thought that a lot of characters had a "brainwashed" personality. I will say that Tabitha did a good job on Minty- which I think was only due to her acting skills. That character could fit into FIM with some tweaks.

I also don't care for the animation in the older gens. A lot of it is slow and awkward, especially the eyes. "It's old" is no excuse. It still looks crappy IMO. Snow White is from 1937 and looks a lot better to me.

A big reason why I like the current generation is because of the snappiness and expressiveness of the animation.
