gaming Steam could be comming to linux?

Yesterday, 30th of march (Not April fools) Gabe Newell sent outan email discussing linux drivers. To quote an article I read this from.

Valve may be looking to recruit Linux experts to address "a bunch of performance issues in Linux drivers". The full quote is below:

 

We are running into a bunch of performance issues in Linux drivers (e.g. 50 millisecond draw calls because the driver is compiling a shader).

 

We'd like to hire someone to work on these performance issues. If you know of anyone we should be talking to, I'd appreciate getting connected with them.

You can see the original article here. I originally thought this was a fake, but @michaellarabel later posted proof after he himself had contacted his sources at Valve to ensure the e-mail was genuine. And yes, I can confirm that those e-mail headers are genuine and match that of an e-mail I recently received from Valve.

 

So what does all of this mean? The e-mail suggests they're looking for help to make games run smoother on Linux. If Valve are porting their existing titles to Linux then that could indicate that Valve are looking to expand the Steam Play service to include Linux which would also mean a Linux version of Steam is in the works.

So what do you think of this? have you ever used an OS based on the Linux kernel but didn't like it because you couldn't play games on it natively? I don't think we can expect valve to give any more information about this for a while because of valve time.

Discuss your thoughts on this. If this is real, could it be the death of windows (looking at windows 8 preview.....)

Death of windows, I don't really think so, you can just not upgrade. Anyways besides that, it's pretty awesome if Steam will come to the Linux os. I know you can just use wine, but natively is nice.

Hmmm...maybe one step closer to the death of windows? I'm serious look at windows 8, its bad beyond fixing, all focused around tablet computing.

that and wine is buggy and somewhat hard to set up, along with the fact it does not support Direct X 11 and a few other things.

 

 

BTW linux its self isn't an OS, its the kernal for the OS....

hopefully this doesnt got shot down like before when they said "we have no plans to support the linux oppearting system" , maybe steam is going take some action since nvidia recently joined the linux foundation.

I've never really been a fan of linux. I guess I'm just too accustomed to windows.

But as for steam moving on to it, Sounds like Gaben is grubbing for more money,

Steam goes to linux->More people get steam -> more people buy valve games -> ??? -> Gaben's pokets are lined with Benjamins

Uhh...nope.

 

Valve didn't develop for linux before because of the low amount of users in compassion to other OS's. They aren't going to get a great deal of money more from this now. I think this is more likely to attract CURRENT users of steam on windows to give linux a go OR if they use a dual boot or the like, to ditch windows forever.

I would really love to have Steam on Linux. Linux is my primary OS, and would be one less reason to boot onto Windoze. The only reason I still have Windoze on my computers is because of the games I play. Wine can even play some of them.

I hope this is true. But even if it is I won't not switch over to a Linux OS. Mostly due to the fact that I got a few other games outside of steam that isn't compatible with them.

This is pretty much me. As a PC gamer I have all sorts of games that I play that wouldn't work on Linux. I haven't used Linux much for this reason.

It is worrying where Microsoft is going with Windows 8 though, probably end up being a flop like Vista was. I mean flop on the general consumer market. It will be great for tablets but how many people own a all-in-one PC with a touch screen? Not much.

Yes, I too have the consumer preview and it was a total waste of everything. I couldn't even use xbox live on it because it wasn't available in my country. Edited April 26, 2012 by Dave247

I had the exact same problem. I even encountered several crashes on both the system and applications. Even tho it is a beta.. Windows 7 betas wasn't nearly as unstable.
