I don't understand why some people need to drink coffee in order to not feel groggy all morning.  If they are getting enough sleep, why would the coffee be necessary?

Because caffeine withdrawl causes you to feel groggy.

If you never consume caffeine, you'll generally be fine. If you consume it regularly, then you won't get withdrawl, so you'll also be fine. It's semi-regular consumption of caffeine that can make you feel awful.

It seems like not being able to function without it would be a sign that you are consuming too much.

There's a difference between feeling groggy and being unable to function.

If I go without coffee for the morning, I'll get a mild headache come on at around 11am. It will last a few hours, and then go away. Interestingly consuming coffee once the headache has started makes little difference. (A couple of paracetamols will fix it though.) After a few days without coffee, the headaches stop, and the addiction is gone, or at least the physical addiction. I know, I've given up coffee once or twice in the past.

But personally I'm resolved to drinking coffee now. I like to drink a hot drink sometimes, especially in the morning. I dislike tea. Hot chocolate and Horlicks are nice, but they're a bother to make, and less healthy than coffee.

Addiction is not a bad thing in itself; it is the effects of addition that can be bad.

Addiction to methamphetamine would be a bad thing because meth can cause constipation, anorexia, blood pressure changes, and even increase the risk of Parkinson's disease. Meth is also socially unacceptable to use, illegal, and expensive/difficult/dangerous to acquire.

Caffeine poses no long term health concerns (unless consumed at ludicrous levels), is socially acceptable to use, and is legal, cheap, and widely available.

Love it. Need it. Starbucks is okay but I would rather make my own.

I'm more of a tea person. Too much caffeine actually makes me sick now.

I used to drink coffee in high school, but irregularly.

I like coffee as an occasional treat, particularly at Tim Horton's.  My favourite these days is French Vanilla latte.  I'm not a Starbucks fan at all as the coffee tastes burnt.  I'm more into Second Cup.  For regular drinks every day, I used to be into instant coffee, but for the last year have been drinking chai tea.

I used to. I kinda got addicted to going over to Dunkin Donuts and buying it like everyday. I had to cut back because I couldn't afford to keep going there everyday.

Sure do. That's what I'm known for around here if nothing else. Love me some coffee and I drink it all the time. Not addicted to it though, nor do I get caffeine headaches from not having any, I drink it strictly out of love.

I only recently started drinking coffee. I got a badass stainless stove top percolator for christmas. It took a little getting used to plus figuring out how to brew it properly but I can say I really like it now.

What I drink can't really be called 'coffee' in good conscience anymore, I think. I buy Starbucks Seatlle Lattes in the grocery store which contain 80% milk. Anything less and the coffee flavor overwhelms me. Also these things are highly sugared, which is the reason I don't drink them daily. I'm trying to cut down on sugary stuff and since I don't need coffee to be active it's a logical thing to cut. (Not to mention that stuff is expensive)

I like coffee a lot, but it makes me poop. Most days, I REALLY don't want to use public restrooms, so it's really exclusively a weekend drink.
