Favorite Metal Song You Ever Learned

Mine is a three way tie between "Demonoid Phenomenon" by Rob Zombie, "Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier" by As I Lay Dying, and "Aerials" by System of a Down. I guess, technically, you can't really construe System of a Down as metal, but they're close enough. What bout you? And I swear to metal god in Valhalla, if any of you mention Black Veil Brides or disgusting plebeians similar to the nastiness that is and forever always will be BVB, I will find you, and I will culture you.

I have three...

(Technically it's "art rock", but whatever.)

Finally, a good dose of pirate metal.

TOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! So much fantasticism.

It took me forever to nail, too.

There's quite a few great songs out there. It's really hard to narrow it down to just three but for now I'll throw in ones I tend to go back to most often:

Equilibrium's Snuffel

Skeletonwitch's Within My Blood

Amon Amarth's War of the Gods

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFRla4lbZlk

Runner-ups:

Masterplan's Crimson Rider

Masterplan's Crawling From Hell

Masterplan's Spirit Never Dies

Skeletonwitch's Baptized in Flames

Thunderstone's Tool of the Devil

Korpiklaani's Happy Little Boozer

Falconer's Lord of the Blacksmith

Manowar's Sleipnir

And also Red Sun from Metal Gear Rising's OST.

Did I mention there's way too many to narrow it down?

Hm... Metal just isn't my thing, I'm afraid. If only you could remove the vocals out of this song/make it purely instrumental, I might like it, because instrumentally it's pretty awesome (at times), but the vocals are a MAJOR turn off for me:

'Tis why I avoid metal (well, I also don't like my music that 'harsh', typically). Not to be a hater, but it just doesn't do it for me. Not even Folk Metal.

Have you accepted the gospel of Opeth into your life? They are a good intro metal band, they have some songs that go from heavy brutality to Lipton piano melodies that make you want to frolick in the grass with butterflies dancing around your head. I would like to say that I'm exaggerating, but I'm not.

This is one of my favourite songs to play on guitar, some really fun riffs there.

One of the whopping two Periphery songs that i've managed to learn, the rhythm felt a bit awkward at first but it's quite fun to play when you "get it". And that last note where you hit that low G# string really hard and it makes a sound so low that the floor and everything in your room resonates.... ohhh god, it's just great.

Psh... I won't accept any gospels into my life. =P

I decided to give them a try, though. I listened to "Eternal Rains Will Come" and that's what we call "Metal"? Very strange, the instrumentation and feel remind me a lot of some of the 70s Progressive Rock I've heard.

Opeth is a very unique band, highly experimental. Every album sounds very different and they can go from extremely mellow to pretty hardcore and very few of their songs ever sound the same even on the same album, something a lot of bands have a problem with. I've only heard a few albums from them so far but I have a friend who's a major fan of them. He hates most modern metal but Opeth is his favorite band of all time and he's always trying to push people to listen to them and always gives them albums based on their tastes because Opeth has it all.

Try "April Ethereal" or "Demon of the Fall", those are my two fave. Their songs are SO LONG but SO WORTH

I'm a big metalhead. Even though I never learned to play any song I listen to them a lot. I've heard about every Black Sabbath album with Ozzy in it a about three when Dio was lead singer. But my favorite bad is Korn. Because I grew up with them and I like the heaviness of they're sound and J.D.'s vocals.  But I still go to the classic stuff like King Diamond, Diamond head, Angle Witch and Savatage. I'm also still finding new old bands then I never heard of and wish I found them sooner. Like this...

And I pretty much dig on all kinds of metal, from folk, viking, industrial, Death, thrash  to Progressive, symphonic and Power metal.

Like,

I love Opeth so much. I have three of their albums, "Watershed", "Coil", and "My Arms, Your Hearse" which is a collection of their bonus tracks from other albums. April Ethereal has to be my favorite song, comparable/rivaled only by Demon of the Fall.

I'm still fairly new to playing guitar, so I can't play many metal songs yet, but yesterday I did learn Transylvanian Hunger by Darkthrone. The song is only composed of 3 very simple riffs, but for some reason, I find it really fun to play.

...But that's just my opinion.

You should check out Rob Zombie or System of a Down (SoaD isn't as metal, more a harder alternative. They've both got really simple riffs that are more about rythm than insane fingering and sweet picking / finger taps. Excellent intro metal for guitarists.

Metal is a lot wider genre than most people assume. Some bands are about violent instrumentation and growls of course but there are more peaceful ones as well. There are also the ones who mix heavy songs with lighter ones like Opeth or Falkenbach.

And well, I recently ran into pretty epic power metal band (not one of those with all-the-time high pitched vocals and cheesy shredding solos singing about slaying dragons lol). It is called Oden Organ and I love it so much I instantly ordered their last CD. Here is what are they like:

I try learning this song and I almost finished it. To my big suprise tuning is... drop G or G standard so I had to tune my 8 string guitar to G standard to learn this one :o

Sweet lawd, I could never function on an 8 string. I got my 6 string les Paul tuned down to drop B (B F# B E G C#) or drop C depending on what songs I feel like jamming to (C G C F A D). 8 strings? I'll pass XD

8 string guitar can be definitely confusing at first but once You get used to it it is pretty fun. Unless someone is chugging F# string all the time. Tbh I don't use the biggest string often xD

But I can see how some people would not play such guitar, it is all fine. I have 6 string guitars too btw :D

  • 5 months later...

On drums, I've learned Chapels Of Ghouls by Morbid Angel

that part starting at 1:30 is what I'm talking about, and I learned it with the blast beats too.

Back when I was trying to play guitar (never was good at it in my short experience) I was able to play the riff of Seek and Destroy on acoustic but not that one riff at the start of the song
