Big Macintosh's original name

According to Lauren on Deviantart, Big Macintosh's original name was supposed to be Big Apple, but it didn't pass legal. But how is it that calling him Big Apple didn't pass legal, but they can call him Big Mac, and get off scot-free?

Im Not sure if this is in the US, But Where i Live, In Malaysia and Australia there is a brand called "Big Apple" Doughnuts, Presumably the names "Big Apple" was Copyrighted. In the US according to the Offical Public Catalog, Its a song by Paul Wendel, Peter VanSpall & Russell Dunn :D

One is Trademarked and Copyrighted and the other is not in a manner of speaking.

Big Apple - can't use

Big Macintosh - can use (Big Mac is allowable as it is a natural derivative of the source name, and source cannot be confused with the fast food chain's offering)

I am not 100% sure of the trademark status of the term "Big Apple" in the United States (if it is a trademark, it most likely belongs to NYC & Company, the official tourism organization of New York City).

There is also the likelihood that Hasbro did not want to attempt to trademark a nickname that was already in common use, which itself could land Hasbro in a mountain of legal trouble.

In addition to being ambiguous in terms of trademark, it would make Big Mac's background ambiguous, as many would believe the name suggests Manehattan origins, when in reality it seems as if he has lived on the farm all his life just like Applejack. Thus, Big Macintosh makes a more fitting name.

I can also vouch for what said. The American kids' show Salty's Lighthouse was an adaptation of the British show TUGS, which had a character specifically named "Big Mac" in it. In its adaptation, all visual references to the name "Big Mac" were censored with a black bar and the character was referred to as "Big Stack" instead to avoid any possible legal ramifications with McDonald's.

It's more fitting for our red farm stallion to be named "Big Macintosh" as it makes the apple-related pun in his name more obvious.

I don't think they've even said "Big Mac" in the show, that's just what fans call him

Actually, he has been called Big Mac, for example, in Filli Vanilli, when he's late.

This is your average, everyday annoying signature.

Are you seriously reading this?

Really?

Wow. I didn't think you'd actually waste enough time to get to the fourth line.

Or the fifth, for that matter. What, am I interesting or something?

Actually, other characters have called him Big Mac several times. He's actually barely referred to by his full name anymore, if ever.

Show's how out of touch I am with the show :P

I figure Big Mac is easier to get away with because Mac is a shorter word for Macintosh, and Big Mac isn't exactly an uncommon name

The other meaning of mackintosh is a type of raincoat.  I believe that in British slang a mac is a raincoat.

But yeah, for the show, Mackintosh is one of over 5000 types of apple grown in the USA.  Big Apple, of course is New York.

Yes, a Mackintosh (Mac/Mack) is a raincoat. Generally made of a light-weight water-proof fabric, designed to keep you dry but without the additional padding to keep you warm that some other coats might provide. Roughly knee length, often with a hood. It's named after Charles Macintosh (without a "k") who was an early pioneer of rubber.

This is certainly the sense that most people outside the US would interpret "Mac" as meaning. Or at least is would have been before this came along.

Of course, with the "Big" it becomes a reference to the famous McDonald's hamburger. McDonald's have a trademark on "Big Mac" but trademarks only apply to a single area of enterprise. I could start a plumbing business called Calvin Klein, and it wouldn't infringe on the clothing company's trademark, because they don't offer plumbing services. This is the reason that Apple Computers and Apple Records could happily co-exist for so many years, and it only became a problem once Steve Jobs decided it would be a good idea for his company to branch out into the music business.

Not only is Big Apple copyrighted, but when the audiences see it, they'll think of NYC. Also, if you name Big Macintosh Big Apple, then he will probably have to have the same accent as Babs, which doesn't make sense because he grew up in a farm.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

Big Macintosh is better. I think the better question is "What was he original name in canon?" Was he born big or was he Lil Mac at one point. :P

i DO have a topic on whether Big is actually part of his name or not. it's around here somewhere.

His name is not Big Mac, That is just what other ponies call him for a short version. It is big mclntos, as in the apple.

It probably has something to do with New York City being referred to as the Big Apple.

Let's not forget that Hasbro already had a business partnership with McDonalds long before FiM came out.

Considering how much money Mickey Dee's brings in from Hasbro-licensed Happy Meal toys, I can't really picture them complaining about a character with a name similar to one of their sandwiches.

it is just like Adventure time! :3

in the gender swapped version they were going to name the male version of Princess Bubblegum, prince blow pop.

but they couldn't because of a trademark name.

in both cases the characters ended up with better names, so its good! :3

"Macintosh" is a computer, not an apple.

His name is Big McIntosh, not one person in this thread got it right.

Show's how out of touch I am with the show :P

Actually, no one called him that until all the way in season 2, Hearts and Hooves Day, so you're not too bad off :)
