That doesn't really justify it. How do two non-magical human beings give birth to a magical one?

 

According to the back story provided by Jennifer Lee (the director and writer), Elsa's powers were related to a planetary alignment. Elsa was also apparently born on the winter solstice, if I remember correctly, though that might be popular fanon creeping into my mind. In essence, there was a confluence of supernatural events surrounding Elsa's birth. The explanation was intended to be stated in the film, but I believe it was either cut for time or because the information didn't add anything essential.

 

 

I didn't like frozen.

 

But the movie is for girls. Its about overcomimg your fears and anxieties, it supposed to teach little girls how to be brave. It shows them that there are different kinds of love.

 

I disagree in large part. The movie is for a general audience. One need not be a woman to appreciate a story about sibling love, overcoming anxiety, and accepting your gifts without shutting out those around you.

 

 

I can never emphasize enough how Elsa should have been a stronger character. If she was going to be the antagonist of the film, she should have been a straight-up villain. Why? It's a fairy tale! I know we have that whole villain reveal at the end, but he's not nearly interesting enough to be a great villain. The reason why I don't find Elsa interesting is that she doesn't feel like a complex character with complex and adult feelings, emotions, and motivations. She just feels like a teenage girl going through that teen girl phase of wanting to be herself but is afraid to show her true self to her peers.

 

 

If your point is that Elsa seems immature, bear in mind she is a social recluse who is barely into her 20s. She has more poise and grace than Anna, but she lacked the experience and emotional wherewithal to handle a severe crisis of confidence. Her reaction, albeit scaled up due to her powers, if a very human one, not simply relegated to angst-ridden teenagers. Elsa ran away from her difficulties and sought a new standard of barriers. Adults do that, too.

 

Human beings are complicated creatures. Most of us don't turn over to villainy at the first sign of trouble. Elsa did come very close when Hans led the small detachment into her ice palace. If you watch the scene closely, you can see her shifting from panicked to angry to outright enraged. There's even an instance during her battle with the Duke of Weselton's men when it clicks for her; she can use her powers to absolutely curb stomp two grown men.

As much time as Elsa spends on fretting about her powers and the reaction of world around her, in the course of one scene she gives us a glimpse of what she can do when the gloves quite literally come off.

 

To me, that's extraordinarily fascinating! Although Elsa never plays the role of the villain, the knowledge that she could is frightening in its own right. She's like a cute Norwegian version of Bruce Banner: you wouldn't like her when she's angry.

 

So, as far as I'm concerned, Elsa's characterization is a breath of fresh air because she a classic anti-hero who is but a few steps away from taking the plunge. She and Anna eschew the archetype of the evil queen versus the purehearted sister. Elsa doesn't need to be dark or villainous to capture the imagination.

 

 

I would have found her more interesting if she had more anger inside her. Instead of just pushing Anna away from her, Elsa should have felt something against her, and wanted to take vengeance over her.

 

 

Why would Elsa plausibly feel anger toward Anna, though? Elsa suffered through the guilt of nearly killing her sister, and believed that separation would prevent a similar incident from occurring again. Their parents also cared for both girls, as evidenced in most of the scenes in which they appear, even if they did not foresee what would happen if Elsa remained closed off for most of her life. The source of Elsa's anxiety was never Anna; rather, it was her own powers.

 

Anna, on the other hand, might have been more inclined toward bitterness. In fact, two of the songs cut from the film -- "More Than Just as Spare" and "Life's Too Short" -- heavily implied Anna as harboring resentment for Elsa. "Life's Too Short", which played out an argument between Anna and Elsa in the ice palace, was ultimately replaced by the reprise of "For the First Time in Forever."

 

I don't think the approach of arguing that Elsa should have been resentful in order to be more interesting is necessarily fair, because the assertion implies anger is the prime way to explore someone's isolation. Yes, some people and characters do become angry as they lose control -- Hiro Hamada in Big Hero 6 used anger as a vehicle for his grief; Loki in Thor sought to destroy Jotunheim to prove himself a worthy king -- but it isn't a universal response. My standing argument is that Elsa's decisions are very believable and compelling in their own right.

 

And don't get me wrong: imagining Queen Elsa marching back into Arendelle accompanied by an army of giant snowmen is absolutely boss. However, I am also satisfied (for different reasons) to see Elsa move down the path of reconciliation rather than vengeance. I think it was the best resolution from both a narrative and moral standpoint. (By moral I mean to say that I believe Elsa finding a way to make peace with herself and Anna was more virtuous than tearing apart Arendelle.)

Family movies with general appeal are more lucrative than just targeting one particular audience. After all, little girls don't have expendable income, but their parents do. Elsa and Anna are commercialized to appeal to girls; Olaf is commercialized to appeal to boys. In terms of marketing, everyone wins.

 

But the merchandising has very little to do with the central premise. The marketing rarely if ever makes mention of the narrative -- and if it does, it's usually to the exclusion of the darker aspects.

I honestly don't think it's the amazing film that so many people have made it out to be. In fact, I wouldn't even put this is my top 20 favorite Disney films.

That's my #1 biggest problem with the movie, the writers portray Elsa's character in a way that only the young female audience can relate to. I wouldn't mind so much if they made her a more adult-like character. I would have found her more interesting if she had more anger inside her. Instead of just pushing Anna away from her, Elsa should have felt something against her, and wanted to take vengeance over her. When some teen girls feel like their special talents/gifts (or in this case powers) are unwanted, they may feel like they are unwanted. That can cause a whole bunch of raw emotions to well up inside. Then she would have a reason to lash in anger and then become more of a villain. That would be SOOOOO much more interesting.

 

As for Anna, I guess I like her OK, but she could have been stronger too. Many talk about the fact that she waited so long to try and get her sister out of her room, and she never made an attempt to just LEAVE THE CASTLE! She could have at least pried Elsa out of that room and forced her to do something outside. I also think she could have been a bit more feisty. I know she's kind of feisty and adventurous enough, but I wouldn't mind if they made her even more so.

 

As for the male characters...not even interesting enough to talk about.

 

My favorite character is Olaf the Snowman! I remember watching the trailers thinking that he would be my least favorite character, but he turned out to be very funny with some very funny lines. He's also the most interesting and dynamic character to me. He's goofy, but also helpful (or at least tries to be). He's a sidekick character, but also can be a leader in a way. He knows when to be silly, but also when to be serious. Why couldn't the other characters be dynamic like him?!

 

So my overall rating is 38/100. If you think I'm missing something, please don't hesitate to tell me.

Especially the Anna part Seriously, why didn't she try to drag Elsa out of her room? For what, around 18 or so years?

(I have this idea I may turn into a parody someday of how Frozen should have ended: Anna steps into the ice castle, goes "Wow, this is amazi - whoops!", slips and falls and the castle shatters.   Elsa's powers magically control themselves at that exact moment, end of story. XD)

 

I also think that the snow monster Elsa conjured, the one that chased Anna and Kristoff, was really unnecessary. Why send a monster after your sister who basically had good intentions the whole time? And if the reason was that with her emotions, she couldn't control the creation of that monster...she could have deconstructed it easily, instead of letting it endanger her innocent sister's life.

 

ALSO. The very moment I heard the thing about "only true love can save her" I reacted much like CinemaSins at 7:25 in this video.

 

 

 

The only part that stood out to me was when Hans was talking to Elsa in the cell, and that was only because of the way they animated that scene. They had the pretend "camera" moving almost like it would in real life, if someone was actually holding it. That was my only sticking point from the movie, was a tiny effect that had nothing to do with the movie itself.

I don't know if you were really supposed to connect with him all that much anyway. He's not going to go down as one of the all time greatest Disney villains, but the movie wasn't really about him so much as it was about Elsa's internal conflict. He served a purpose in the story, not all characters have to be memorable or really fleshed out.

Yeah, I know not all characters have to be fleshed out (because tons of others weren't either), and the film was fine with how it treated Hans, whatever. Butttt they could have done a lot more with that than they did, so I just found it disappointing to suddenly have this switch out of the middle of nowhere.

I used to LOVE Frozen, but after seeing it a few more times, I was like "eeh". It's entertaining, as a film should be...but it's not a masterpiece, and that's fine, too.

I really really love the film itself and I've seen it a good few times. However I'm getting a bit sick of still seeing it plastered everywhere a year later.

though I enjoyed it, it had it's flaws, downs and all though it was heart warming, funny (Olaf) and even depressing by some scenes so for sure it was interesting!

I think that Frozen is good film. Only good, not awesome or amazing. This film is good entertainment, nothing all.

I like films that give food for thought. I know, that Frozen is only film for children, but film for kids should have a moral, which can show kids how to live in such a way to be a good person. And I don't think that Frozen show us it.

Made this a while back, was quite the controversial post, iirc

 

I watched Frozen (pretty much against my own free will) with 4 of my friends who've watched it 50 times before and have insisted it was God's gift to Earth. I sat down, trying to forget how much the movie has been ruined for me by how much of the internet was saturated with it, trying WITH ALL MY HEART to give it a fair chance...But the entire movie was godawful; cliched, cringeworthy at parts, and the characters (if you really think about it) are complete carbon copies of pretty much anything ever made (the non-ice power sister and the love interest...Lea and Han Solo, anyone?). I did not smile, not. Even. Once. And that is this movie's greatest sin.

 

That unplanned pregnancy is going to need quite the clean-up. But it was either that or Despicable Me 2 for the Oscars, and DM2 sucked some heinous a$$.

 

I really am not trolling or anything.

I, as a movie lover, was insulted by the level it sometimes stooped for a cheap laugh or D'aww-worthy scene.

GG, can't wait for the next Disney movie to come out in another 2 years and for a fandom to develop over it.

ones opinion of the movie depends highly on wether you like the songs, i think.

 

I liked the songs, i liked the animation, i don´t care about the story( to a certain degree) in Disney movies, it was good enough for me.

 

I can understand why not everybody would share that opinion with me, of course  the movie has it´s flaws, as pointed out by the OP.

The thing is: flaws become less noticable when enjoy the overall movie.

I mean seriously, The guy seemed like such a great person at first...Nobody really feigns innocence that well...And at least one of his actions made it truly look undeniable that he had feelings for Anna...If he didn't really care about her safety then why did he not want her to go off and risk being killed? And the plot twist literally happened completely out of nowhere...It DOES help avoid the whole Princess marries a Prince cliche though so I'll give it points for that. But Disney already did that with Aladdin though right?

One of the identified traits of some psychopaths -- which Hans is suggested to be -- is the ability to feign genuine emotion and interest in order to manipulate others. People can and have feigned innocence, and malevolent individuals aren't all twirling their mustaches while cackling in the shadows.

 

There is also foreshadowing of Hans's true motives -- subtle, perhaps even imperceptible upon first viewing, but the warning signs do exist.

Before The Phantom Menace, the origins and workings of the Force were largely unexplained by any measurable metric. It wasn't necessary to detail how some mystical energy field controlled Luke Skywalker's destiny. In a similar way, knowing the precise mechanics of Elsa's magical powers is not as important as her having magical powers and the ramifications of those powers.

With all the fuss they made about it, it's easy to be disappointed with it.

I used to like Frozen before it became over popularized and got annoying. Everywhere i look, there's Frozen stuff. It's merchandise covering all the store shelves. It may be Disney's biggest cash cow but i want some BH6 merch!

Let It Go used to be a beautiful song but it has been overplayed so much it's gotten annoying. The Nostalgia Critic's parody video basically sums up how i feel about the song.

And god, people keep acting like Frozen was the first movie to show girls that they don't need a man. NO IT WASN'T. MULAN ALREADY DID THAT.

Me? I like the movie. I originally watched it when it came out on DVD just so that I could understand just what my nieces, who adore Frozen, were going on about. I liked it a lot, the songs, the animation, the storyline, the non cliched queen... oh, and the fact that the horses are all Fjord horses!

 

Is it my fave Disney movie? Nope, that's still The Lion King 1 and 2. But I do like it a lot, and I thought, for a film aimed primarily at children, the plot and characters were really well defined. Much better than some of the earlier Disney movies, like Sleeping Beauty. My take on it is that, just like Friendship Is Magic, if you don't like it, then don't watch it. Simple as that. No-one is forcing you to, so just sit back, watch something else and let the fans have their fun.

 

Also... found this genderswapped "Let It Go". What if the entire movie was like this, would people who dislike it now prefer it?

• Wait, whos the main character?
• Why did you turn Hans into a villain? It would've been all fine and dandy if they had just melted all of Elsa's ice, then Anna chose the guy she wanted.
• So, this kingdom never gets invaders for all of those years with no ruler?
• Why did this come out on Thanksgiving and the rooster movie came out near Christmas? Wouldn't it have worked better switched around?

Overall its just so overrated. There are still girls I know obsessed with Frozen. There are many other great recent Disney films that you can sell merchandise for.
