This is a poll regarding this thread.

 

 

The purpose of this thread is to gauge the power of the unicorns in the series, and try to figure out a sort of "level system". I encourage you to check out the thread and discussion before voting. I just want to see what everypony thinks. And remember, the level system was completely fan-made, so you're allowed to disagree with it. That's what the poll's for!

 

 

Brief explanation:

 

Magic will be scaled on levels 0-10, NOT 1-5.

In this poll, I only included 1-5 levels per character to save space that would probably not be needed. (Ex: I didn't put "Level 10" as an option for Trixie, because there's no way she's that strong.)

Got it? Good.

 

Level 1 would be the most basic of basics.

 

Level 10 would the Elements of harmony, the Crystal Heart, Discord, and Tirek.

Rarity seems like she'd be able to make an energy beam so i put her at a level 3.

 

Film flam seem pretty weak so i have given them a level 2

 

Trixie is where we get tricky I think by the last time we saw her she had been reading spell books but hadn't been able to cast them mainly out of impatience that's why she went to go buy the Alicorn amulet to increase her power. I think sense then she learned to be a lot more patient so she'd be better by season 5.

 

Put it short Level 2 (season 1) Level 3 (Without Alicorn Amulet) (Level 8 With Alicorn Amulet) (Season 3)

Level 4 (Season 4 and 5)

 

Until we see her again I'll have to limit her at level 4 but i be willing to bet she'll be level 5 ish very soon.

 

As for Starlight she's been seen to be able to remove a cutie mark so that automatically puts her at a Twilight level at the end of season 3. I'm considering her to be a special case so i go ahead and give her level 4 or maybe even 5.

Starlight's a 5 for me, and probably the most powerful non-Twilight Unicorn we've seen so far. She'd have been a good match for Twilight pre-alicornification. Another "School for Gifted Unicorns" drop-out?

I really wonder about her. I mean, is she a super-skilled unicorn, or is that spell the only one she knows? I think if its her cutie mark talent, it might have been somewhat of a freebie for her. Somewhat.

Well, we see her use both magical beams and energy barriers on top of it, as well as (possible) teleportation towards the end. We've never seen Sunset Shimmer do anything other than teleportation herself, and Trixie tried the former and failed miserably without the alicorn amulet.

While I agree with the rest of the list, based on Twilight's ease in using it in Return of Harmony, I don't see why the memory charm would be any more difficult to use than other charms.

I ranked Rarity a four, the brothers a three, and Trixie a five. These may seem a little high, but since AmberDust said that the whole scale wouldn't be in the poll for space saving reasons, this is where I think they'd fall. While Rarity seems to be able to use a fair amount of different spells, she doesn't have much raw strength. When she's fought before, she fought physically instead of attempting to use magic. Also, in A Dog and Pony Show, Twilight was able to learn Rarity's gem finding spell with ease, and she was better at using it in every way.

 

Flim and Flam seem like they're below her level, since they rely on machines and their cleverness rather than magic.

 

Trixie is clearly a better magic user than the other two, but she still lacks the raw power that Twilight's capable of. For instance, she could use magic as pure energy without the Alicorn Amulet, but she didn't have the strength to make it harmful to another pony.

 

Starlight, on the other hand, is clearly a very strong magic user. She can teleport (albeit not as well as Twilight), she can convert magic to energy, and she has the power to make it dangerous to others. But, above all of that, she's powerful enough to take away cutie marks, which are highly magical themselves.

 

Because of this, I'd say she's a seven, and on this scale I'd say Twilight's currently an eight, closing in on becoming a nine. We don't know much about Sunset Shimmer's abilities, but I think she'd be about a six.

We're getting a lot of crazy different answers here.

Remember, the book in inspiration manifestation AMPLIFIED Rarity's magic. She isn't usually that powerful.

I figured Flim/Flam would be equally strong as Rarity, if not stronger, seeing as they built that crazy, magic-powered machine that did the same amount of work as a whole group of ponies...

But I'm not sure how much credit goes to the machine and how much goes to the magic. :/

I put Starlight Glimmer as higher than 5 and I think she would be somewhere around 7 because she was very skilled seeing as she was able to steal cutie marks, replace them, create a powerful energy beam and teleport. Twight is easily more powerful but she would be a pretty good rival for Twilight before her Alicorn form.

I gave the brothers a 3 because the only real magic they use is simple levitation and a spell to start their machine but that's about it.

I gave Trixie a 4 because, while she's powerful, she's not very powerful. She just used a bunch of effects just for show. Her main act was levitation but it was making whatever she did do more complicated things.

I gave Rarity a 3 because she doesn't seem to advanced and the only things we've seen her do (other than the inspiration manifestation) are pretty much levitation but most unicorns seem to be able to do that.

I had some answers here but then I started to think about the use of spells in general and how they can effect a unicorn's power level. I don't think Rarity's very powerful. Her telekenesis isn't that strong and she could do one thing naturally: find gems. Then in Inspiration Manifestation she read a spell out of a book and she suddenly has powerful transmutation powers. And she can either turn ponies into other ponies or swap them.

Now did saying the spell make her that powerful or did she absorb some kind of power from the book? And what purpose do spells actually serve if ponies do most of their magic without them?

Anyway... this isn't an answer so

Trixie is a bit tricky to comprehend. The premise of her shows is based around illusion and stage magic; she wasn't meant to be Twilight's equal in regards to power, or anywhere close.

 

In regards to that and to the scale I would rate her a 5. Her magic requires a lot of precision and finesse, but also enough power to 'wow' the crowd.

 

Flim & Flam and Rarity I would rate as a four in regards to precision and creativity.

 

Starlight I would rate a seven; considering that she is VERY adept at using magic, probably around Sunset Shimmer's potential; though we know little of her full power potential.

Sombra - Technically a shadow pony if you count his FIENDship comic, his magic is at a very high level, so I rate him at 8 or 9.

 

Shining Armor I rate at 6 or 7. Not on par with Sombra, but enough considering how we his shield magic held up and that he can turn his magic into energy.

 

Sunset Shimmer - Hard to rate, but as Celestia must've knew she had something I would rate her high.

 

Unicorn Twi - Very power; easily a 9 for me. Not sure if she could match with the greats like Starswirl, though.

King Sombra was clearly a very powerful unicorn. 8 seems right to me for him.

 

Shining's fairly strong too, but obviously a weaker magic user than Twilight. 6.

 

Like I said in my earlier post, it's hard to really rate Sunset, but I'll stick with 6.

 

And honestly, I think you guys are overrating unicorn Twilight. She never did anything nearly as impressive as Starlight until she earned her wings. But I still think she was stronger than Shining and Sunset, so I'll go with a 7.

Crossing all canon's, King Sombra should come out at a 9, so slightly above Starswirl. In the show itself, we know he was at least powerful enough that Celestia and Luna decided to fight him both at once, though it seems like he had no chance against the two of them.

 

In the Reflections Arc, he was also strong enough to hold both Celestia and AU Celestia in a barrier spell, though Celestia wasn't fighting to get out.

 

There's also the fact he managed to make an entire Kingdom disappear for one thousand years, which, even compared to things like the alicorn amulet and the IM, is seriously powerful magic. After which, there didn't seem to be anything Celestia could do about it.

 

Shining Armor is a level 5. His defensive magic is probably a 6 or 7, but the offense we've seen from him is nothing special, just the basic unicorn laser. That leaves him on par with ponies like Starlight Glimmer, who lack the raw power, but have more finesse and a wider range of spells.

 

Sunset Shimmer's comic grows through a lot of trouble to show us that magically, she's at least as powerful in raw magic as Twilight at the beginning of Season 1, so a 5. She simply lacks any extra showings to prove that she should be higher.

 

Twilight at the beginning of Season 1 was a 5, which is basic magically gifted unicorn. By end of MMC, though, she's easily a 7, only slightly lower what we know of Starswirl. (I guess that means the Alicorn Amulet should be tier 8, then? Seeing as how it's "highest level unicorn, it makes sense.)

She finished Starlight's spell to become an alicorn, not the other way around.

I was actually touching on the fact that she either created an entirely new spell to counteract Discord's magic, or she learned that spell on hand. In either case, that only took her a few hours between learning and the time of activation.

Twilight is the only unicorn with actual feats of heavy lifting via telekinesis, so i'm not sure where this comes from.

The Changelings in Swarm of the Century, although I give you Bats.

 

This obviously isn't everything (i'm ignoring the books and comics, mostly because i'm not sure if this list is including them). On the smaller scale, Twilight has dozen of smaller spells she knows how to use, including gravity alteration, weather manipulation, time travel, transmutation, charms, etc. That means she has Starlight Glimmer beat in both power and versatility. Which leaves finesse, but she manipulated a half dozen of Fluttershy's animals independently of each other in Magic Duel just fine, so she has has her beat in that as well. I guess what i'm saying is, I just don't see where this is coming from...
