Princess Celestia: Just Like Us?

I wonder why she uses her magic so rarely? And why she did not confront Princess Luna or Discord on their return? She did not in any way aid those who she depended upon.

Because she only uses it when it is deemed absolutely necessary, not to just make instant coffee or some shit. But mostly because that way the show doesn't become all "then Celestia did something and good happened."

Mostly answered it for me. But a little to add: She's really helping them, I mean, if it wasn't for the problems the mane 6 face, then their friendship would wither. I mean, the stuff they go through, at the end of each episode, just ends up strengthening their friendships, and in the end it was all for the better.

If Celestia intervened, she'd stop those good things from happening. Hence; she doesn't. In fact, she even caused one. She probably knew the 2 tickets and 5 friends would cause a problem. But in the end, it ended up making their friendship stronger.

She shows the ability to teleport at the end of Lesson Zero, presumably all the way from Ponyville to Canterlot. She also managed to shut down Twilight's first uncontrolled burst of magic with nothing but a simple hoof to her flank. There's no doubt she's powerful in terms of magic. As for facing Nightmare Moon and Discord, Nightmare Moon made her move at night, which would no doubt mean she would be more powerful, especially since Celestia had already lost her connection to the Helements of Armoury. As for Discord, he was shown to be stronger than Celestia (again, sans Helements) by randomly mixing up the day and night cycles. But that's okay, since he's clearly more powerful than any pony, and only lost to the Mane 6 due to his own arrogance.

Here's the timeline as I see it:

1. Mischievous Spirit of Chaos (Discord) reigns. Luna and Celestia team up and use the EoH together to turn him to stone. The Royal Pony Sisters begin their rule of Equestria as equals.

2. Luna becomes Nightmare Moon. Celestia either managed to wrest control of the EoH away from her, or NNM becomes incapable of using the EoH at all, by default causing their power to go to Celestia. Using the EoH, Celestia seals NNM away in the moon.

3. 1000 years later, NNM escapes (at night, allowing her to neutralize Celestia) and is defeated by the Mane 6, the new wielders of the EoH.

We can probably assume that Celestia lost her connection to the elements somewhere between 2 and 3. Perhaps the birth (or alternatively, the discovery of the Cutie Marks) of the Mane 6 leads to Celestia losing her own connection to them.

Finally, we can conclude that Celestia's raising of the sun is not part of the power granted by the elements. From Hearth's Warming Eve, we know that the unicorns as a group raised the sun, a task now done by Celestia alone. So Celestia is more powerful than the entire race of unicorns.

Sorry for the rambling, but in the end, I would say Celestia is for certain stronger in magic than any unicorn, and likely/perhaps stronger than every unicorn combined.

She's also one of only two three alicorns. (I'm with Lauren Faust. As she said, and I agree, there should only be two alicorns; Celestia and Luna. But nooooh, Hasbro had to add a third...)

Also, I suspect that when Celestia banished NMM to the moon, she lost her connection. I mean, like you said, they depend on harmony to work, but when she did that, that was a disharmony of the holders. So, presumably, for that 1,000 years, the elements were in remission, so to speak. (Hmm. Interesting possibility of other stories of ponies that held the elements before the mane 6. Or do the holders become immortal, and that's why Luna and Celestia are immortal? Interesting idea. We've seen that Luna's aged from S1E2, her first appearence, to "Luna Eclipsed". I figure she was small from having half of herself (NMM) destroyed, and has recovered. But that's still growth. So maybe they're no longer immortal, and the mane 6 will have to one day take their places?... Or quiet simply, they're still immortal but the mane 6 will still one day rule EQ.)

And also like Celestia, if you won't obey him, Jesus will condemn you to centuries of torment! ... I wondered where the show got that aspect of her from.

But maybe... Celestia isn't powerful all. It's all a sham. She gets up in the morning and makes grunting sounds while the sun rises to make people thing she did it. All records indicating that the sun and the moon traversed the sky on their own before her have been destroyed.

Don't worry. Eventually you'll come to love Big Brother Celestia, too.

And he loved Big Brother Celestia.

In all seriousness, I'm so fed up with all these people trying to make Celestia evil, that I might write a fic about a rebellion, even though she's good. Despite the fact I'm in the middle of another fic right now!

I was referring to sending Luna to the moon for 1000 years, and turning Discord to stone for 1000 years. Not that I'm questioning Your Majesty's wisdom.

Or, for a very different point of view than mine, see Happy Thoughts, by some hack called Shagbark.

Rather than argue the point, I'll just point out that I didn't say he wanted to. I said he would. Citation: The Bible. (I'm aware some people argue that God does not "send" people to Hell, but that this is just something that happens on its own without God's intervention, or as the working out of the Laws of Justice which even God cannot violate, or many other variations on the theme. I'm not interested in having that discussion again.)

As Lauren Faust has said, the opening in S1E1 was careful to say "Reluctantly, she ... banished Nightmare Moon to the moon."

Point is, she missed her sister, and said so, crying when Luna was freed from NMM in S1E2, but she had to do it because she had no control over the moon, until she banished NMM from Equestria, so it was necessary for day to come.

Night forever, doesn't sound too bad, I was like "what's the big deal?", until I realized that plants need sun to grow, and ponies need plants to eat, and eternal darkness is a little bit of a problem, psychologically...

You have pretty much summed up my thoughts exactly in a better way I could of written it.

IK,R? Celestia's so awesome. And people make her look bad all the time. But you know what?

I never realized Celestia was even a candidate for "Best Pony", because she's so obviously the best I thought it was just something everyone's agreed on, so we mean best non-alicorn/monarch/God pony.

And you know what else?

"Hey, Nopony insults the princess!"

I don't see why she shouldn't be a candidate. It is all preference and if one Alicorn (Luna) can be a candidate for "Best Pony" why couldn't Celestia?

My reasoning for Celestia being my favorite is not anything to do with her in the show other than the fact that I relate to her best in the show. And I feel that is what is most important for favorite characters.

As this is a thread about her being "Just like us" I honestly do feel she is just like everypony else, she just has an immense responsibility as the ruler of Equestria. I do bet there are times where she wishes she could go to Pinkie's parties all the time and etc, but as the Princess, she has her duties to fulfill.

Just to clear this up, the title of this thread was a reference to Ponyville Confidential. Not an attack on the princess. She is a cool person. I just get uncomfortable not knowing to what extent her powers go. It makes it very difficult to predict what she is capable of. I believe she is a just and kind ruler. You know, my real question now is what role is Luna playing in the Rule of Equestria? What duties and responsibilities fall on her shoulders? I don't think it would be wise for Princess Luna to be visibly in power, but I doubt Celestia would force her to do nothing. Nor do I believe Princess Celestia could force her to do nothing, as their powers appear to be on par with one another. This posses the question of what will happen at the Grand Galloping Gala. This event is hosted at night, which may lead to Luna being present. This could cause a disturbance among those who still fear her. Also, what do the Princesses do together for fun? So little is known about these two. I think an episode is in order here. ^_^

From bitterness I arise. I shall thrive in the cool darkness of this moonlit winter's night. Oh how far I have arisen to meet you my friends.

I completely agree on an episode dedicated to a day in the life of Celestia and Luna would be nice! As for the whole Luna thing, I think she manages minor things and of course the night as a way to build her up so she can be as suitable to rule as Celestia should anything tragic happen to her.

I don't think Celestia can do anything and everything, but I think both her and Luna can easily learn how to do things that only an Alicorn could do. (Like say long distance teleportation or healing spells as examples)

And don't you know what the princesses do for fun? They troll eachother.

Well given the Grand Galloping Gala, Celestia probably does want Luna to preside, or at least assist her, since it will reduce her job of greeting EVERY guest (hundreds if not thousands), and "liven things up" in a similar fashion to the mane 6, because even goddesses get bored

at any rate, I guarantee pranks would be pulled in such an episode

That's the thing. I'm pretty sure she's a kind ruler. After all, if she ever did anything that horrible to any of the characters, she'd become a villain. It's as simple as that. But I just don't see that happening. None of the mane 6 would just accept one of their friends being banished or imprisoned for something minor. I'm pretty sure they'd do everything in their power to stop it. In Lesson Zero, the other ponies all stood up for Twilight when they thought she was going to be banished or imprisoned (even though that probably wouldn't have happened). And Celestia was moved enough to listen to them. Would she really have listened to them if she was evil? I mean really.

As for her power, well it seems like it goes up and down, so there's no real telling exactly how powerful she really is.

I do agree that Celestia needs her own episode. Maybe Season 3 will give this to us, but it would really help.

I meant an episode on the Princesses in general. They both could use some exposition.

I don't think those two have such a negative relationship, Whiteshade.
