Popular game? I have no idea, because the popularity of a game is often inversely proportional to its quality (not always for the truth ..).However, I think that games such Assassin's Creed series are always quite popular.Even games like Minecraft.

 

Another game that I noticed to be very popular on the web is Five Nights at Freddy's. Nice "little" game.

 

But there are also many games not so popular that deserve more attention from the public.

Lately I have played a PC game called Gone Home. It 'a narrative interactive  game that I found very interesting, although I understand that is a type of game is not "suitable" for everyone.

Sadly, I really dislike most of the popular games nowaday. On Xbox One, the top games are apparently Destiny and Fifa 15 (which are both rather meh in my opinion  but obviously most disagree  )

Splatoon is popular enough to extend its influence beyond gaming. It's already got a few web comics and even a ridiculous amount of content based off it's miiverse function. Heck, it even has a fanclub. https://mlpforums.com/topic/133158-splatoon-fan-club/

I honestly feel there's really no "most popular" game. When it comes to gaming, there's tons of different audiences, plus different standpoints, to actually say there's a single "most popular" game. It kind of depends on what kind of "thing" you're looking at really.

Another game that's pretty popular right now is Smash, because whenever is Smash not popular? League of Legends is also a biggie, but that's been dying down recently by a lot.

Pokemon is a weird one. When a new game comes out (XY and ORAS in particular), you cannot take four steps without hearing the name 'Pokemon'. It completely dominates the internet with it's sheer amounts of popularity. Then, a few months after the game's out, the popularity dies down and stems until the next game. I call it the 'Pokemon Popularity Cycle'.

 

It does get surges of minor popularity with spin-offs, like Pokemon Emblem (er, Pokemon Conquest), and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
