This is actually really weird I have to say. Some mention of the journals would have been nice so far this season but we have heard nothing. I actually liked the journals far more than the letters.

Season 4 Episode 23 Inspiration Manifestation was the last time I saw the journal.

It last appeared in Twilight's Kingdom, Part 1; Discord bookmarked the more important morals each character learned prior.

Although I don't miss the letter format, the fact that the journal hasn't been referenced at all feels really weird. I wonder where it went, too.

Yeah that's probably it. I just re-watched that part and it seems the diary was so they can figure out the keys to opening that box. As for it's location it's last seen when they were reading it in some library which looked like a part of the Castle of the Two Sisters.

Maybe that was a way to end it, but that'd be a bit rushed...

It's existence was pretty pointless compared to the new much more subtle format, I'm guessing the writers just didn't think about it and replaced it with the current format.

I would love for them to make a reference to the journal again. I agree that it just seems weird to drop it after just one season.

The problem is that many of the friendship lessons aren't as explicit these days, or they seem to be more general life lessons than friendship lessons, or they're merely different ways of presenting previous friendship lessons.

After Twilight accidentally sent it through the portal in her castle, it was lost for years before being found by some kid in the Oregon wilderness while he was hanging up signs for his great uncle's tourist trap.

...I have no idea where you got that idea from.

I have no idea what happened to it.

I find it weird that it hasn't even been mentioned or shown sense Twilight's Kingdom part 1, when it was a major part of season 4.

Eh, it makes sense to me in a narrative sense; It existed as a vehicle specifically to highlight the keys of harmony they were getting and was touched on in the finale when they became relevant.

After the finale and the keys dissapearing, it lost its narrative purpose, and as such the writers have quietly laid it to rest and aren't going to use it anymore

Is it the same journal that receives messages from Sunset Shimmer? If so, that would have been a nice detail. If not, maybe it was just forgotten or something.

The journal Twilight uses to communicate with Sunset is the one that used to belong to Celestia. It was part of a pair. The journal Sunset uses specifically writes to the one Celestia, now Twilight, had and vice versa.

When Twilight became a princess, Celestia did confirm that she wouldn't be her student anymore "in the same way as before." Maybe that means Celestia no longer thought it was necessary for her to report on friendship every week...as for why the other 5 don't seem to write letters anymore, ya got me lol

Just because the journal isn't referenced anymore, that doesn't mean the friends don't write in it. The show's writers probably thought it lost its narrative significance, and that characters can learn lessons without having to be shown writing anything down. I think they respect the viewer's intelligence and allow us to connect the dots. The friends could be writing in the journal off screen. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. I suppose that is quite a ways into headcanon territory, but as it hasn't been stated that the mane six and others such as Spike and Discord don't write in the journal anymore, there's room to believe that they still do, and that's what I choose to believe.

Thinking about it, they seem to have ditched the "Closing lesson of the day" format this season. there wasn't anything really tying everything together at the end like the letters of S1/S2 or the journal of S4.

Honestly, I kind of think its a good thing, as while I think such things have their purpose and point (The comic staff have used it on occasion in the comics very well, and it was a great closure to the Crusaders of the lost mark episode), forcing it really makes it feel... well, forced, yeah?

And I think its nice to have an episode or plot every so often that doesn't revolve around "this lesson was learned" so much as just a situation, yeah?

1st season of Happy Days (a 70s sitcom) Richie had an older brother (Chuck?).  At the end of the season he went up to his room & was never seen again.  He took the journal with him

Chuck actually disappeared halfway through season 2, but I get what you mean.
