Do you pay attention to song lyrics?

I pay attention to song lyrics when they’re legible, which is a 50/50 proposition. And when I can decipher them I want them to rhyme. By rhyming I don’t mean two words that share a common vowel and nothing more. True rhyming requires the right consonants as well and matching stresses on syllables, which absolutely no one pays attention to anymore. Mostly I just hear a lot or repeated lines that mean little and rhyme even less. And these songwriters are millionaires, WTF?

Definitely. I don't expect high poetry from lyrics, but I do expect them to not be a complete gibberish. The only exception of course is music that was made to be silly or ridiculous, but that's a complete separate category.

I pay attention to the lyrics most of the time - assuming I can understand the language. I also like to sing along with some songs.

There are some songs where the music is happy but the lyrics not so much.

Depends on what song it is, and if I can actually make out the vocals, when in most songs I just can't.

I try to. To be honest, I have trouble understanding song lyrics and I often won't really know or understand it unless I look it up.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

I used to always pay attention to song lyrics and it would be the first reason a song would catch my interest, because I was sick of pop music having the most shallow themes imaginable - but recently I've turned around completely and refuse to pay attention to the lyrics first, only looking them up if I particularly like a song. My reasoning is this: there are songs for any lyrical subject out there if you go out there looking, so what should matter is that you like the actual music! I've found some stuff I listened to doesn't hold up anymore because I have found music that covers those themes AND has music I really really click with, so it became clear I didn't actually like the music as much as I thought (and I read poetry these days for that so I don't need to listen to things I don't vibe with anymore). It's helped me figure out what I like musically much more.

Of course, if the vocals have some real trashy shit that is also hard to ignore in the music then it does become a problem :x so many bands just need to stick to instrumental only oh my god... all the above said I still think lyricism is important and can really help a track a LOT, it just shouldn't be the only thing carrying a song ;]

To memorize yes

And to see just what the song is really about like how does it connect to anyone in the series

I like to pay attention, it’s fun to know the words and sing along and as someone who aspires to write a song or two down the line it is nice to try and understand how others write their own lyrics and gather some ideas.

Yes, I do. I can't stand liking a song's melody but not being able to decipher the lyrics. Any time I hear anything over the PA that I think I'd like, out comes my phone.
