Naming Your Children After MLP Characters?

Why would you name your children after a character in a show? Most names in the show don't even make sense for a name. Although there are a few that are actual names.

If  you name your child after a cartoon character, you do not deserve to have children. These are human beings who have to live with these identities for the rest of their lives, not pets. The fact that people even consider such a thing is disgraceful. You don't deserve to be a parent if you can't take your kids naming seriously. It's one thing to like a name after hearing it on a show, but naming you kid after characters is idiotic. It's even worse if you give them an obvious reference to a cartoon.

 

If anyone names their kid "Pinkie Pie" you literally should have your children taken away.

Considering all of the infinitely more horrible things that some parents have done to - or have made it possible to be done to - their children, naming them after a pony easily pales in comparison.

 

I don't care if a parent names their child Snipsandsnails if they love, care for, and otherwise facilitate the happiness of their dreadfully-named child.  You can be a giver of questionably whimsical names and still be a good parent.  And for crap's sake: The child can just have their name legally changed at some point.  I did.  A given name is not some irremovable stain that tarnishes the very soul of an individual for all of forever, and some people will find ways to be cruel to a child no matter what their name is.

 

And no, they shouldn't - and wouldn't - have their child taken away; not based on that alone.  There are no legal grounds for such action, and I disagree with how you feel a parent's suitability had ought to be judged.  I don't care if you were employing hyperbole.

Well, I've got a feeling that a child named "Rainbow Dash *Last Name*" would get bullied to Oblivion. Though, there are indeed some names that could slip past the danger zone.

 

-Luna, for example. It's Latin for Moon. No weird stuff there.

-Celestia, aswell, though it could be a bit fine-tuned, though not neccesary. Celeste, I suppose? Or even Celly.

-Pinkie could actually work as a human name, though just a smidgen weird. It would have to be a really cheerful female for it to work

-Daring could be plausible. Just remove the "Do" part, and It'll kinda fit in.

-Cadence works, most definitely. Huh, it's kinda weird that the princesses have names that could fit in with humans. But, Twilight doesn't. A sign that she wasn't made to be a Princess, mayhaps?

 

Aaaaand that's all I got. They're all female, however, so I suppose males will never be named after a pony. A right shame, that.

I've got a story to tell, about my father. It's relevant to this topic, I swear.

 

Quite some time ago, my Dad told me that when I have children, to make sure they had relatively 'normal' names. You see, he has no first name.

 

Yeah, I know that doesn't make sense at first glance. What I mean is that his entire name is a collection of family names, each of them from his ancestors which his parents (my grandparents) wanted to make note of. But for some reason they didn't bother adding a 'given' name at the beginning of the string which was unusual.

 

Yes, there was bullying about that, but more important he said was the hassle it caused *every time* he tried to sign up for something. Every time he had to go through the same arguments over and over again about 'don't play about, this isn't a game. What's your *real* first name?' and so on.

 

Which wasn't helped by the fact this was at the same time as the actual hippie movement, so there were people running around calling themselves 'Moondancer' and whatnot. Mundies usually assumed Dad, who was a musician and about the right age, was doing the same thing and thought he was making it all up.

 

So he told me to please think about it before I named my own children.

 

However, now it really doesn't matter as much as it did then. The region I live in, the people I deal with, are from all over the world culturally. Some of the names I run into on a daily basis seem insane on the surface. I know a girl who's first name is thirty-four characters long, because her cultural background  has a complex naming convention that makes my head spin when she tries to explain it. Most of the people at work wouldn't notice Dad's naming quirk because all of his names are foreign enough to them that they can't tell if they're given or family names. I know a Jane, a Dmitri, a Devarayulu, a Chikere, an Understanding, a Gon, and someone actually named 'Mary Sue' (And yes, she has that name *because* of the term. Her parents were Trekkies with a warped sense of humor.   )

 

So MLP names? Let's be absolutely honest. It's highly unlikely anyone will notice when stacked up against all the other weird names running around. Unless you happen to be living in an area that is very culturally monolithic, of course.

Most likely not. I don't personally intend to have children in my lifetime (hate them) but that doesn't mean I haven't thought about names before. If a pony name was an option, it would be something subtle or something that just sounds like or even is a real name.

I don't have a problem with the idea in principal.  However, in practice it would depend very much on the specifics.  As has already been mentioned numerous times some of the ponies names are already used widely in society (Cadance, Lyra, Luna etc).

 

There are some names that would attract criticism but that's an indictment on society as much as on the parents, the derision shown by some people on this thread is evidence of that.  There are names in use now that would have been unthinkable twenty years ago, and in twenty years time there will be names in use that are unthinkable now.

 

Progress only happens when somebody takes the first step.  But that being said, as much as I like names like Twilight or Sunset, I don't think I'll be using either of them if I have another daughter.

Excuse me, do not tell me what parents can do to their children that is worlds worse. I came from foster care and I know how much worse parents can do, but naming your child is part of their identity, it is one of the first things that shapes who they are, it's the first step to being a parent and if you can't even take the first step seriously then you are not going to take the rest seriously.

 

A parent's suitability NEEDS to be judged and IS judged legally every day. If people are not capable of taking care of children they are in fact taken away.

 

Just because you have a mentality that all is fair and good doesn't mean the rest of us should. Your child's name could lead to bullying, self esteem issues and more.

I think there are some occasions to naming your kiddo after a character, but if you pick a name like Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie, that would get your kid bullied. If Cadence or Lyra is gonna be your kids name, then I think it would be a little bit more acceptable into society. This is just my opinion, and if I had a kid I would just name them something then let them choose their own name when their old enough, if they want to.

No because they sound impractical for people, and it'd be dumb and embarrassing especially for the kid. 

 

Honestly I don't have a problem with people naming their kids after fictional or cartoon characters, just as long as they stay in the realm of reason. Naming your kid Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, or Megatron is a stupid idea that will no doubt result in your kid getting bullied, but naming them after, say, one of the Simpsons, Harry, or Rocko(or even some pony names like Luna or Lyra) should be fine since those are still frequently used and accepted names regardless of fame(and they were widely used before anyway)

 

I still think naming your kid Anakin is really pushing it though

Some of the names are actually really good. I'd love naming my daughter Octavia, or Luna.

 

But others like Rainbow, Pinkie, Applejack, and many others seem way to ponified to be a human name.

I agree with this. I can see maybe talking some aspects of a name, like Twilight, but not the Sparkle, or else they're directly linked to MLP. Other character with more normal names, like Octavia, Luna, Celestia, Cadence, etc are fine since they aren't DIRECTLY linked with MLP. I'd hate to be a kid named Sunset Shimmer because my parents didn't have any common sense and get bullied my whole life.

 

On this topic, wasn't there a guy who changed his name to Rainbow Dash?

some people already have weird names or weird spelling of a name ex dyan is dean.I think it wouldn't be to crazy to think of meeting someone with a name like Luna because there are much weirder names than Luna or Celestia or even Candace counting i know some one named Candace already so if one pony name is already used why can't you use the other names.unless it's pinkie because that is not a name.

It's a bit too much in my opinion. Some names are fit for it, and some aren't.

 

If your kid has a name like "Twilight Sparkle", their life wouldn't go well as they will be bullied a lot.
