OMG where'd MLPforums go?!

Is something going on with the forums themselves?

Couldn't get mlpforums on Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer, at first it wouldn't work on Firefox either but I repaired my internet connection anyways after i ran a diagnostic that said "nothing was wrong" - psh lies!!!

So it could in all honesty be something wrong with my network or connection via the ISP

i'm using Wireless (N) if that matters... and ISP is TimeWarnerCable/Roadrunner.

Update: guess it was the network / DNS flush cuz the repair seems to have fixed it ... at least my usual Google Chrome is now showing the site okay.

Whew! I was telling my friend "OMG THEY HACKED MY PONIES!!!"

(Cuz he's a mod on a RS fansite forum thing and they recently got hacked by because some inactive moderator account got hacked.) It was kinda funny the way I said it. Guess ya had to be there >.<

Update 2: hmm no it wouldn't let me post this topic. Wth is going on?

Wow that's crazy Flare - thanks for the info... should we all change our emails now? I'm assuming that's what the hacker(s) were after?

NOT trying to cause a huge panic!!! Just asking.

There are many who don't like us bronies. It's not surprising that some of them have "teh hacking skills", and can do something like this. As always, we will love and tolerate their antics... poor dears....

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!

Just a quick notice, I recommend every member either follow the MLP Forums Twitter or the MLP Forums Facebook Page in order to keep in touch if such an attack were to occur again. Unless both Twitter and Facebook go down as well, updates about the sites status will be posted on each account.

I'm certainly hoping we don't get any repetitions, but if you want to stay informed this is the best way to go.

Nice job getting the site back up and running so quickly Feld0, and whoever else that might have been involved! I've seen sites go down for days after a DDoS attack.

I will admit I was worried, and am sorry to hear these fine forums came under attack.

But as the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and now that I can log in again, I can say I do better appreciate what I was missing. :D

I noticed something strange was going on with the site when I tried to log in before sleeping. I couldn't get in, but after I woke up, I didn't even remember that the site wasn't working until I saw this post ^_^.

Why would anyone DDOS this forum? I would think Equestriadaily, ponychan or ponibooru would be better targets than this forum.

I'm not sure how it works, but maybe those three are too hard to take down: I believe they are bigger than this forum.

To answer both your immediate question and the obvious one of WHY?

The Denial of Service attack was directed against one of the sites in the network MLPForums is connected to.

This is why it is called a Distributed DoS, because the attack is distributed across everything in the network. Every single site that CleverKite Cloud hosts went down. This includes us.

The attackers might have targeted a different website completely, but because we're on the same network, we went down too.

So don't raise passions about some hater out there who may not even have wanted us to go down. The best we can do is sit tight and wait. I suspect that even CleverKite don't yet know who did it, or even what website the attack was aimed at.

Because we has the secret plans to develope a massive weapon system, capable of engulfing an entire planet in flames...

On a serious note, they attacked All of us that are tied to Cleverkite at a sorta bad time, but..atleast I was able to rest easily knowing this forum is in good hands!

Whoa, guess I missed out on some stuff while I was asleep. Huh. Another reason why I hate the internet. Yet I'm still on here every day all the time. Meh.

It's ironic how I fall just to get back up again...

One thing I'd like to point out is that this was a DDoS, and not a hacking.

That means that personal information and passwords aren't going to be taken. DDoS attacks just cripple the server being attacked, and does not mean hackers are compromising anything. DDoS attacks are done by automatons, and hackers as well will not be able to access the site while it is down.

Do you've any idea who might've carried out such an attack? ._. Would've required quite of a lot of people.

Not if somebody had a botnet.
