gaming Those 'what were they thinking' moments in video games

I feel like there's moment in every video game where I ask myself "who's idea was this to put this in the game"? For example I was playing Super Metroid and I was in that part in Maridia where you have to power struggle with the controls to jump threw all that sand and those monsters are shooting at you at the same time.

I had one of those when I played Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas recently. The flight mechanics are awful and I was thinking this at every single flight mission - or actually, just N.O.E. and beyond.

Lol, I feel like all GTA games have terrible flight controls. I feel like I've had to train myself to be good at them.

I suppose they do. Thing is, I didn't grow up with GTA: SA like a lot of people - I just got it the other day because I've always head it was amazing and it was pretty cheap for the reload on my console. I started with GTA 4's helicopter flight mechanics, and then GTA 5's. I then moved to SA's a while later. I'm already used to GTA 5's flight mechanics, which makes San Andreas' mechanics impossible.

The more I think about GTA. The remote control helicopter mission in Vice City was pretty dumb for just too many reasons. The biggest one being controls also.

Yeah, I recently remembered that mission. I saw it way back when I first got into the game...or at least the internet, heh. Oddly, I was thinking about this one as I was posting. Luckily, I never had to deal with it. However, if they release Vice City for the Xbox 360 as well, guess whose blood pressure is going up when I get it? :diamondtiara:

The only reason it was never a problem for me is because I was terrible at the game when I was young so I could barely make it past the first, like, eight missions. >.>

Forza 6 has a particular thing that makes me question Turn 10's logic to no end: Where the hell are multi-class racing options???? Not ocunting just private lobbies that is. Forza 5 had that with no issues and yet they are completely absent from the sequel. Again, except for private lobbies online. Forza 6 is actually a better game than Forza 5 in every conceivable way, EXCEPT for that. Multi-class races even happen during events in the career mode and showcases, but you have no real options to set them up yourself, EXCEPT in private lobbies, but why not have it be a general thing?

All of the glitches and balancing issues found in the first generation Pokemon games sure make me wonder how the games were even released to the public. (Or at least without being checked or polished as much as they should have before being released.)

I can understand where you coming from with this one, but the old pokemon games were huge for gameboy. They might have felt like they couldn't just wait till the next lifetime to get the game out and released it. That's just what I see alot of other developer's do these days like Skyrim. "Lets get it on the shelves guys, we can patch the 1000+ glitch's later". I didn't really like that idea for Skyrim, but I also don't think that the pokemon glitch's inconvenienced the game that much. Unless its the missingno glitch. That was kinda over top.

Lol, speaking of Skyrim. Releasing a game with the crashes and freezes on top of many other game play issues. I didn't even give it the chance to patch. I was just done with that BS.

How hated will I be if I said the majority of the sonic games? Specifically changing the formula from anything "Go fast" related, even then there were some bad ones in the bunch. Also gonna throw in the Mario party "everybody moves in the same car" BS, again, something that didn't need to happen in the slightest

this one right there! but since you already mentioned it, I'll just take something else...

does anybody remember "Vampire - The Masquerade"? I sure do because I just found out about it like two weeks ago. But it's an old game, so I was kinda thrilled for it. A pre-twilight vampire-game! Finally I'll see some gory and brutal vampires again, WOHOOOYEEEAaahno. the character-creation is not really a "creation", and the Nosferatu-type is the only vampire that looks like one. all the other idiots look like they were taken directly out of a boyband of some sort. while I like the game-mechanics and the masquerade-stuff, I can't just stop cringing at this vampire-mafia-mashup, where vampires dress like stars from the 20's and...OH HOLY HELL they all look and behave like they just jumped out of a teenie-magazine! WHAT THE **** WHERE THESE GUYS THINKING WHEN THEY MADE THIS?

Jesus Christ. I really struggle on those. I usually get a damn millisecond past the gold.

Granted, I couldn't do it in 1998. I can nearly 20 year later though!  :P

The Sonic series has a lot of these "What were they thinking moments" for me. Especially with the recent release of Sonic Boom for the Wii U. How could they release that unfinished mess to the general public!?!?? I will forever be baffled by Sega's decision :comeatus:. It's embarrassing when I have to withhold my enthusiasm and set the bar extremely low whenever a new Sonic title is announced :okiedokielokie:.

This year is Sonic's 25th anniversary, so they better not let something like that ever happen again!

Any escort mission with stupid escortee AI and/or friendly fire that can't be turned off.

Lol, Resident Evil 4. The whole game is an escort mission.

The bombchu mini-game in Majora's Mask. You're on a spinning platform and bombchu's are a nightmare to aim even when you're standing still. The game also costs 50 rupees per try, but that's just a nuisance rather than truly bad.

Mine's not so much of a moment, but rather a whole idea - Nightmare difficulty in Doom games. Don't get me wrong, it definitely lives up to its name, but the thought of constantly respawning monsters is quite ridiculous to me. Doom 3's wasn't much better, degenerating health, no medkits and enemies dealing quadruple damage. Sounds fun. :P
