I'm not even a Battlefield fan, and I'm flabbergasted. I can't wait for what will be (and I researched this) the very first AAA, realistically set World War I FPS to feature a single player campaign.

Wait, so EA is letting DICE do something that fans actually want now?

How will they ruin this good looking game? HOW? Premium edition? PRe-order DLC? WHAT? How will EA screw this glorious thing up, I don't trust them not to.

Hoping for a gameplay trailer soon because holy fuck that looks awesome. First time since Bad Company 2 that I've ever been interested in a Battlefield game

Battlefield 4 was amazing, in my opinion, but this? This is such an awesome idea. Think about it. Not only will this be a HUGE change of pace for the shooter genre while COD continues to be typical garbage, but also, this will allow Battlefield 4 to continue on and be its own experience. Two separate shooter experiences, this is friggin' awesome. I know this game will have the typical DLC stuff that EA is known for, but unlike Activision's shooter, this game will actually have a lot of quality.

I wouldn't say that.

Do not forget Star Wars Battlefront.

DICE is well known for letting EA come in and fuck games up by rushing deadlines and implementing stupid crap. While I remain hopeful because the game looks awesome... I can't ignore the elephant in the middle of the room: EA.

I think Battlefront was a case of EA not sure what they wanted it to be. They clearly were trying to make it not seem like a pure Battlefield clone, but I think that is what hurt it in the long run actually. This game, I feel like EA will give DICE more room, but I am being cautiously optimistic on that. I do think that Activision is way worse than EA though.

EA is known for nothing but crapping on developers and holding franchises hostage. Battlefield was a case of being rushed because EA wanted it out in time for the movie. EA is known to rush developers (hello Dragon Age 2!). Activision while many people loathe them for Call of Duty, they operate many other divisions under them that they don't rule with an iron fist such as Blizzard Entertainment. If anything has an EA logo on it, it's subject to the rule of EA with no mercy though.

I would easily say EA is far worse than Activision considering EA was voted the worst company in the industry like 3 times in a row. EA coined some of the worst DLC/anti-consumer practices we know. Activision just pumps out shitty Call of Duties.

Seems interesting. Kind of odd how they call it "Battlefield 1" though....havn't really played a WWI type game aside from the WWI planes in War Thunder.

This without a doubt will happen, and this is what angers me about the gaming community today.

First point I'll make is that there is a disturbing trend of large companies not knowing how to count. But I'm pleasantly surprised that they're actually making a WW1 game. I really hope Eastern Front will be covered.

Also, that song for the trailer is perhaps one of the worst choices they could have possibly made. Why couldn't it be something orchestral?

And, of course, like three years ago, people are already judging the quality of CODIW and BF1 even though both games are not going to be released until half a year later.

I don't know if EA does this, but Activision has started a very terrible DLC practice in BO3. They lock weapons behind a lottery method of unlock in which, in each try which is purchased with tokens, the chances of unlocking a new weapon is less than 1%; a practice that you would see on freemium or pay-to-win games. If Activision were to go on with this practice, they may as well make COD a free-to-play game rather than a full priced game. The sad thing is that probably many people bought these tokens so the practice may only get worse in future COD games.

WOW!! I can't believe DICE and EA are actually taking us back to a time when things were much simpler as opposed to their competition who is only going farther into the future. I approve of this direction and I hope sells an insane amount and COD sees the success and decides to put out a World At War sequel.

I think Eastern Front was already confirmed in the livestream.

It's a fantastic trailer in a lot of ways. The quality and professionalism is leagues above that shown in the Infinite Warfare trailer, plus we're seeing a game set in WW1 amongst a sea of sci-fi shooters at the end of this year. I've watched this trailer at least 15 times and I love it even more and more. Plus, everything in that trailer is somewhat historically accurate. All the guns, costumes, vehicles, locations, battles....all can be sourced :D

I know this game will have the typical DLC stuff that EA is known for, but unlike Activision's shooter, this game will actually have a lot of quality.

As a side note here, Battlefield 1 is going to include free DLC drops amongst possible paid content. So it seems they are taking the more recent strides in Battlefield 4 to heart, providing both the base 4 paid DLC's alongside other drops of new maps and content throughout.

Having played Verdun, a multiplayer FPS in the same setting (I would recommend it if you enjoy bolt action rifles, mad charges into machine gun fire and getting shot from a million miles away and thinking "Who the fuck did that?") I eagerly await this game. too bad it's EA, so all we can really know for sure is that it'll be released early with little testing, have 60% of its content locked behind a paywall and absolutely no bug fixes for about two years. However, in a genre flooded with pointless sci-fi shooters with terrible writing and indistinguishable mechanics (I'm looking at you, Call of Duty), this may be the redefining game. Most shooters take place World War Two onwards, so when it was announced that this game was to be set in the Great War I was pleasantly surprised. Who knows, maybe we'll get that Napoleonic Battlefield game I've been praying for next. It will be nice to see how they handle the melee weapons common in the trenches, too. Nothing was more satisfying than bayoneting an enemy player on COD World at War, so hopefully that'll be replicated here with trench clubs and swords. Very nice to see a FPS that isn't "MURICA, FUCK YEAH", too. Or at least, in the trailer it didn't seem too focused on the side that fought even less than the Russians. But I've been wrong before. Even if it looks bad, I'll probably buy it to see what it's like. Battlefield games have always been good (Mostly, *Cough* Hardline *Cough*), but their downfall is always early releases and expensive DLC.

Still, can't wait to charge kraut trenches with a Lee Enfield sword bayonet listening to the Grenadier's March. Good times, sounds like.

I'm actually pretty hyped for this game already, not to mention the song in the trailer which got me even more hyped up.

But seriously though, I'm really hoping that it can avoid the trend of mediocrity, or being a completely broken mess at launch.

  • 2 weeks later...

Apparently this is going to be a slightly altered WW1 scenario in that it's not going to be 100% historically accurate concerning weapons and vehicles. Which is fine because it's still a change of pace from the done-to-death futuristic setting. I'm glad they've taken a risk and have made a WW1 game instead of a modern/futuristic or even a WW2. As much as it'd be cool to see Battlefield 1944, this is definitely a lot more interesting. Finally, a AAA game featuring trench warfare, cavalry charges, biplanes, etc..

Also, there's apparently going to be a gamemode specifically for cavalry charging which is cool.
