Crystal Empire and Atlantis comparison

Interesting analogy since it vanished. I think an argument could be made that any eventual Sea Pony kingdom would be the Atlantis of Equestria ...

Not really. Atlantis is technically a myth that may or may not exist. The Crystal Empire, however, is like a normal city that happened to get hit by a curse causing it to disappear, and then re-appear every 1000 years (I think I got that right).

But the Crystal Empire is not a myth, it was simply cursed. Atlantis is a whole different story, though.

I guess you could say they both have certain things in common, but nothing that really stands out.

It does have a lot in common with other fictional depictions of Atlantis, being a lost city with an advanced and wide culture. "The Crystal Empire" struck me as a better version of "Atlantis SquarePantis", without the Flanderization and cheesy musical numbers.

How about the Crystal Heart? It's kind of like the Heart of Atlantis from Atlantis the Lost Empire.

Not necessarily "every 1,000 years" so much as "whenever Sombra's banishment expired."

It was effectively a dead man's switch.

Well, yes and no. The Crystal Heart and Heart of Atlantis do share the fact that they both protect their respective kingdoms, but unlike the Crystal Heart, the latter also sustains the life of the long-living Atlanteans. Here are Milo's exact words to Rourke:

You think it's some kind of diamond. I thought it was some kind of a battery. But we're both wrong. It's their life force. That crystal is the only thing keeping these people alive. You take that away, and they'll die.

The Crystal Heart is no where near as essential in that case. If there were no Crystal Heart the crystal ponies could very well live elsewhere in Equestria. Granted their lives would like be affected and they wouldn't glow like the would with the Heart in place, but they won't die if it disappears.

Yes, I know. It would have been darker if that were the case.

Plus, at least Sombra had bigger goals compared to Rourke. Sombra would have wanted to use the Heart of Atlantis as a weapon, rather than just sell it.
