A recent article came up here: http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/06/03/old-and-new-ghostbusters-casts-to-appear-together-on-jimmy-kimmel-live

So the old cast of Ghostbusters will be meeting with the new cast on Jimmy Kimmel to talk about the new film on June 8th. Some of the things already said are rather... Troubling... Such as Dan Aykroyd saying that the "new Ghostbusters film has more laughs and more scares than the first two films." I mean Dan has been washed up for years, and hasn't really done much of significance for a while so this could be Paul Fieg giving him a payday, and Ernie Hudson has been in 3 god awful Beverly Hills Chihuahua movies as some of his most recent films. The only one of the original cast that has done much of significance whose career has not just shimmered into background is Bill Murray and even he is kind of approaching the edge of the spotlight. So this definitely poses the idea that this is a pay off to get the film out there.

However... There is the possibility that the old cast actually likes this film (they could also be senile and not know a good film when they see it), so instead of all of us going out taking the risk and giving Paul Fieg cash, I have decided for the sake of being 100% fair to the film, one of us needs to go see the film and try to come back with an actual review.

I will find a way to get tickets either for cheap (or free if possible) to go and see this film so we can at LEAST have a fair review. I am going to go in and put my previous connotations about the film aside and give it a fair chance and grade it solely on the film and not anything leading up to the film. If it sucks, at least we will know for sure that this film really was just a cash grab by Fieg trying to appeal to new wave feminists.

I have to be fair to this movie as much as I can be.

Something tells me that this movie will be a success simply because of all the controversy that's been surrounding it. Controversial topics get people talking, which in turn draws more and more attention. Sometimes that's all something needs to be successful. I'm not saying it'll be a box office hit or universally praised (fat chance), but it might do enough to make the film a commercial success at the least. Could still see a sequel or even series out of this yet.

I'm just as skeptical about the role of the surviving original Ghostbusters too, all of them are well past their prime and this could easily just be a quick paycheck for them. I don't trust anything Aykroyd has to say after all the shit he spewed out about the original Ghostbusters III script either.

But yeah, if you do go and see it, good luck. Don't let it get to you. :P

I am going to see the movie simply because people told me to boycott it.

Sadly, I agree. Bad reviews mean nothing to these kinds of directors. They only care about the revenue. So if the movie gets the worst reviews in history, but still makes a profit, they won't care. They will churn out a sequel because they know it'll piss people off more.

I'm going to try.

God, why are People making such a big deal out of it? Like youre being a special savior of human kind, by watching a Movie...

I will go see it, because the Movie looks good to me, but i wont write a review, if someone wants to know what the Movie is like, than watch it. Some People are obviously interested in seeing how the Movie is, which means, that the Movie did already succeed anyway.

Now some People just search for a way to watch it for free, which i personally dont find okay, since that breaks the law but...uh, whatever.

I dont understand Internet Culture anyway.

I think this movie could go either way. The one thing I'm worried about is that the jokes could be forced and not natural. That's the one thing that separates a good comedy from a bad one. I discussed this with my mother and she even said she prefers the older one, simply because it was dynamic and focused on action, rather than trying to inject comedy at certain points.

I don't think the old cast is going to come out and say "Yeah, it actually isn't looking good at all!", that would get the studio on top of them really fast. They are the original members of the franchise, so the studio could very well be offering them top-dollar to say anything positive for the film. That is very conspiracy sounding, but it wouldn't be the first time it has happened.

I am just going to let the critics see the film and tell how it is. At this point, the movie looks awful to me and I won't give them my money, unless reviewers say that it actually is a pleasant surprise, but I have a bunch of doubts about that.

Yeah and cast members of Terminator Genysis said THAT was good too. They have a stake in the film, of course they are going to say its "good."

If you know its going to be bad, just don't go. This isn't that hard.

My goal is to at the very least check to see if the original cast is being honest or not. I want to believe that they at least see some redeeming quality about the film. So far we've only graded it on its god awful advertising and Terrible trailer. It MAY be that rare case when it's actually somewhat decent. I'm not holding my breathe though.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm a small time film critic IRL, and I need to write about the movie anyway.

I'll have it ready the Wednesday after the film is released, and if there's enough interest, I can post it here after it airs on Friday.

I mean, look at the video game "Hatred". Despite the whole controversy, the game itself was badly made and barely had any sales (as far as I know). Barely anyone remembers it nowadays.

Locking temporarily for cleanup.

Please keep it cool fellows; there really is no need to go into arguments about this. As such any post deemed antagonistic or contributive to a hostile discussion has been hidden. It's a topic worthy of discussion and it'd be shame to lock this.

Thanks.

I think I may have to give the original a rewatch, as it has been a while since I've seen it, and I will probably find myself enjoying it where I hadn't before.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your opinion on the reboot.

I am not watching it, it is a garbage remake that is taking a s!@# on one of my favorite movies ever. The jokes are are garbage, the plot is garbage, the theme is completely wrong, everything about it is garbage (except female cast, I thought that was okay [other than sexist jokes they make in movie]). I would not give these retards my money if I was at gunpoint.

I've literally prayed to God (*literally*) that it doesn't suck, but not for the reason you're thinking of. See, I'm thinking that if this bombs, Hollywood will use it as an excuse to go "Oh, I guess audiences don't want female casts!" and not try anything like this for another 20 years or whatever, instead of accepting that it bombed *because it was an awful movie*

There's currently an embargo on all reviews for the film. Until it lifts on Sunday at 10 AM PST (1 PM EST), we'll just have to wait for the madness to unfold.

Review embargos are usually not a good sign...

Almost all movies have embargos. Hell, Disney put an embargo on reviews for Star Wars until a few days before its release. So, they're not always a sign of trouble.

It's abused so often these days though. So many companies put out embargoes so they don't risk losing those pre-ordered tickets which are still refundable.

But yeah, I'm expecting this movie to be a disaster.

I love the idea of a gender bent remake of a classic...

but the preview make it look terrible.  I just don't buy any of the characters.

Ghostbusters didn't actually have a good plot.  It was all about the amazing comedy of the actors.

Maybe these ladies can pull it off, and it will be a great movie, but I might not see it at all based on the strength of the trailer.

The worst part is that no matter the quality of the movie, we lose. If it's good, there will be endless articles bragging about how we were all wrong to be anxious.

If it's bad, there will be millions of people calling us sexist and why making movies with female leads is not a good idea.

I'm not sure that I 100% agree with the lose-lose part of this.

If the movie is good, we may get other strong gender-bent remakes of movies that I loved.

Just because people write annoying articles (that I don't plan on reading), or jump on the bandwagon and make shitty movies (that I don't plan to watch), doesn't mean it's not a fine idea and experiment.
