Friendship is Memories [Pony ScreenSaver]

(I guess this is technically "Visual Art...")

 

I've been seeing all the art, music, doodles, fan fictions, and PMV's... And I felt like I needed to contribute something. So I opened up flash and got to work. (Although, I suck at just about everything--including flash,-- so don't be too angry when it isn't even half as cool as the rest of the stuff in this forum)

 

From there, I did tons of Google image searching to find the Highest Quality Vectors of various scenes from the show. Then (with the amazing help from Twilight Sparkle/Feld0) I got the background from this forum.

 

Basically, it shows this background, and the day passing to night (time-lapse style); with random 'Memories' appearing in the sky. I imported the vectors, and created over 40 randomly generated 'memories' any brony (or fan of the show) would remember...and maybe even go "awww, I remember this" at some of them. (P.S: One of them is a hint towards the MLP Forums)

 

It's still a pretty big file, with well over 100 library items. Sadly the compression destroyed some of the quality I aimed to keep...But I didn't want to explode your computers with too much happiness (AKA Virtual Memory FAIL). But the screensaver (even after the brutal compression) still looks amazing on my Monitor. (but then again... I'm not much of a quality snob... So it's really your call )

Oh, and don't freak out about the .zip filesize. That's the size of the screensaver itself, plus the installer that installs the screensaver! (And the .txt document...but that really doesn't count for much)

Here's the .zip file containing the installer; and the .scr file itself (for those smarty-pants ponies out there ).

I also included a readme with installation and uninstallation instructions.

 

Huge thanks to Twilight Sparkle for letting me use the background and being OK with the whole process; Feld0 is best pony.

 

I'm not to good with flash, and this is my first submission to the community... so please don't be too harsh with your criticism!

Edit: I forgot to mention. The screensaver generates these memories based on "math.random()" and as any starting programmer would know, math.random isn't very random. So you will probably see certain "memories" multiple times before you see them all. You'll even the same "memory" multiple times in a row.

But it should be alright. Some memories are worth revisiting.

I wish it did... Windows would be 20% cooler if they allowed that.

But with any screensaver, sleep Mode is sleep mode. And it turns your monitor off.

I set mine for every 5 minutes. So it's not too long.

Agreed that would be epic. And If you're planning on updating it, heres my two cents of what I would like to see:

1.) Make the clouds slower, and a little higher in the sky

2.) The memories could appear in thought bubbles? I dunno how that would look. It might look retarded, but I think some of the memories should be more transparent.

3.) GIF MEMORIES!

3.) Some ponies trotting through ponyville at the bottom of the screen would probably get this on EqD

 

Regardless of any of those, this is still amazing. I will keep it for my screensaver forever <3

I actually wanted to put some Pegasus Ponies on the clouds (because we all know the weather is controlled by them, and only in the Everfree forest does it happen naturally.)

But when I did, the ponies in the clouds and the ponies that appear in the sky were "conflicting..." It just didn't give the same feeling, and it looked a bit strange. So I removed it before I uploaded it, and left them as clouds.

1. I tried making slower clouds, but my computer didn't like that... *cough* STUPID VISTA*cough* But moving them higher might look 20% cooler. I'll definitely jot that down as one of my future updates. (When I get around to it, that is)

 

2. I tried the whole thought bubble thing, but you're right, it did look a little odd. But I did leave one thought bubble image, it's the MLPForums hint/ad I threw in there as one of the pictures. The thought bubbles looked funny alone. Especially the MLPForums hint/ad. So I put some pony vectors around it.

 

3. You may not believe it, but I had about 12 gifs lined up to be put in. (Sonic Rainboom...epic.) But the filesize of the .swf file was already getting enormous (almost 30 MB!) Which normally wouldn't be a problem, except when you import a gif, it has to import frame by frame. As in 10 frame animation would could as 10 jpegs. Which is a ton of extra data I didn't need to use up. So I compromised, and went with still frames of the gifs I was going to use. (Fluttershy's shadow, Rarity's Wings, Twilight's Book, Angel's Clock, and a bunch of others.)

 

3 (double 3's, all the way, across the sky). I actually had that on my list of things to put in this release, but I couldn't find any transparent vectors of anypony's walkcycle. They had that white background, or weren't even animated. And really, ponies don't just scootaloo along pathways (unless there's a soap trail!.) But if you could find some walkcycle animations I could probably thow that in.

Okay, what I was talking about when I mentioned Rainbow Dash on a cloud was Rainbow Ditch and her holding onto the cloud. You could have her randomly appear on the really fast cloud every once and a while.

They're pixelated, of course, but they'd be small enough that it wouldn't matter, and they're all very well animated. I think they would actually fit in pretty well and be visually appealing.

1.) Are you allowed to use it (I think so, because I'm pretty sure our loading bar uses Rainbow Dash's walk cycle from that, and Apple Bloom's sig uses Apple Blooms)

2.) They are pixelart walk cycles. Probably not really what your looking for.

Yes, you are allowed to use those images. They're all readily available, fully editable and in a freely distributed package, meaning they're free for use, as long as you don't do things that break the Copyright of Hasbro or anything commercial (which would be breaking the copyright anyway).

 

Edit: Also, you obviously can't claim to have made the GIFs yourself, either, as that is stealing art.

I like this, but I think there should be some movement besides the memories, gif memories, maybe make the transitions a little slower, and it needs music all in all I say 6/10
